  • EUROPEAN RAILWAYS of the 1990s
Choceň (Czech Republic ČD) on 21st March 1997
Choceň is situated around 60 miles or around 95 Kms North West of Brno. The station is in a deep cutting which allows for some very interesting eerie acoustics. Their is a large Yard adjacent to the station which is busy for freight traffic. Two bridges span the cutting just beyond the station which offer great views of the railway. On this visit I witnessed quite a few long mixed freight trains and passenger trains. Nearly all traction was Electric but still a very good location. Some services were in the hands of Railcars, I'm very pleased that I managed to slot this visit into the timetable that was created for this trip.
Anyone familiar with the area covered I hope will be immersed into the days and era of the material featured. I hope this series will appeal to the BR enthusiast as well as the European enthusiasts and again feel free to comment on any material or subscribe and like to the channel to help support it's growing popularity. It may not always be possible to answer every comment or question, especially if it is not in English, but every comment is read and greatly appreciated.

This video is a gem! This is how I exactly remember my childhood and operation on the main lines. Fraight train every five minutes, usually consisted of varry kinds of wagons and gods, pulled by 6-axle SKODA classes 181, 2 or 3.
    Thanks for release.

    Thanks for this!
A truly extraordinary trainspotting location. I discovered it from the train window in 2006, and visited it during two holidays in Czechia in 2008 & 2021. Although some loco types appear in all three decades (your video & my two sets of photos), the overall picture is so different.

    About the cutting:
Cutting was made after the WWII as the original tunnel from 1840's was deemed unsafe both due to age and damage caused during the WWII (If I am not mistaken, it was due to explosion of ammunition). Also the line was proposed to be modernized and have 3rd track laid. That sadly did not happen and until this day there are only two tracks and the third in the cutting is used as shunting neck.
There are also plans for high speed tunnel to Kerhartice which will then lead to construction of new bridge and all three track in the cutting serving their intended purpose.

You are right, tunnel was used as a hiding place against fighter-bomber attacks. One such train exploded there (munition or steam, not known) and damaged the tunnel extensively...
