    Allan Holdwosth is an alien, he improvised on Lingus in the nineties when Snarky Puppy didn't exist. He knew that Lingus would be composed in the future. Allan Holdworth is a star child. He is almighty.

    The people saying that this "doesn't fit", have NO EAR AT ALL and definitely are not familiar with Allan's playing. Holy shit, it's absolutely perfect. It's almost as if Allan was hearing this exact chord progression in his head. This video came on autoplay while I had another tab open, and when I clicked over and realized what I was hearing, I just started laughing at how perfectly his phrasing modulates as the chords change. Insane!

      I've listened to Corey Henry's solo on lingus at least 100 times...and he is much more musical in his approach than Holdsworth. I understand AH was just riffing and not playing some finished product, but I enjoyed Henry's phrasing and more conservative use of modes and chromatic runs much more.

    A lot of people here criticizing Allan’s playing don’t realize that this video is an edit where the backing of snarky puppy’s song lingus was put behind a clip of Allan simply playing by himself so of course this isn’t going to be a fantastic example of Allan’s playing. You want to hear Allan at his best listen to the album “sixteen men of tain” it’s got great compositions that showcase Allan’s improvisational talent.

    If you listen closely, Allan is playing mostly in phrases that be parameterized as relating to various harmonies in E. You can clearly hear E minor and E major notes and especially the phrasing along B minor at the end of the video.
    Obviously, things like E minor and B minor in a Holdsworthian context have extended meanings, but the point stands. His playing is definitely not ‘random,’ but rather, geometric.

      @@jamesvalls8530 I’ve forgotten a lot of my music lessons but after you’re comment came up and listening to it once again it could be worked out from what’s implied by the bass.
      I guess what’s more impressive is that the person who made this video thought of these two together and said to themselves “you know what, they’ll fit” lol

      I went to a Holdsworth clinic back in like ‘03 or ‘04. Someone in the audience asked him if he could read music. Without missing a beat, Holdsworth said “Reading? I just look at the pictures.” Someone else said they’d analyzed a bunch of his solos and couldn’t find a theoretical explanation for his improvisation method and asked what he was doing. He said he played how the chords made him feel and talked a bit about how can’t listen to Clair de Lune without crying because the harmonies and the melody is so evocative for him. Those response always stuck with me and made me change my approach to interpreting Holdsworth. Holdsworth had a rare ability to play guitar without obvious “guitarisms” and to play jazz without “jazzisms”. He was working from a whole different set of musical fundamentals that made conceptually advanced music accessible and intuitive to him. I don’t know how to get into that headspace but it seems like an awesome place to be.

      @@GDIEternal great story. Holdsworth teaching video.. have you ever seen it where to talks about his approach to chords and scales? He couldn’t read but obviously had a pretty good understanding of music theory even if it was come by all by himself.

    Why does this even sounds like it works? Holdsworth had a similar chord progression or at least the same key in his mind while improvising like Lingus?

      Allan is omni-harmonic. He is in all keys and all harmonies simultaneously

    • @stephenhotaling
      @stephenhotaling 3 роки тому +4

      his harmony is so out that its basically atonal anyway, and the progression itself kinda goes everywhere. he plays with such confidence and great technique/tone that it just works anywhere

    • @___xyz___
      @___xyz___ 3 роки тому +5

      The "outside" playing attributed to Allan is what's classically described as _polytonality,_ meaning that more than one key is being voiced at the same time. It's what you get when you play two songs simultaneously, that are not in the same key. Allan takes it one step further, changes his key centre regularly, and plays tonally obscured arpeggios (see Slonimsky) to boot. I think the latter is just a natural consequence of growth as a musician alongside inevitable "errors" in improvisation (quirks that eventually turn into his musical signature and identity). He finds a way to make it musical by controlling his dynamics and flow. In his compositional works he attempts to merge the stable harmony and rhythm comping with the exploratory improvisation in his leads. Since his lead work takes on the chaotic nature it does, polytonality is practically inevitable at some point. But it's not very pronounced, unlike some"outside" playerswho completely obliterate the comp with multidissonance.

      @@Andreorsel Actually, the more proficient the listener, the more musicality to are able to extract from the seemingly unmusical. Arguably, it should be more likely to "work" if you listen better.
