  • Yes, the guitar has a low volume when the backtrack volume goes "wild"/loud - this is just a "raw" video shooting
    - but I played my grand-guitar with heart.
Yes, my playing in this video is far from perfect
    - but I played my grand-guitar with heart.
I’m playing along this wonderful tune for FUN … but also to learn, and furthermore, to make out my own stuff from it - and I play my guitar with heart. * Hahaha *
My purpose with this video is to hopefully inspire others to keep on - or starting - to work with Allan Holdsworth’s music, with your own unique heart, minds and hands. It is certainly not impossible to play Allan’s music, only impossible to play like(!) Allan … thank God.
But why not playing other’s music as well, with the Holdsworthian "school" approach in your playing … and in your own way? (Can there be no other way? No!)
My point is: keep Allan’s music and also that guitar "school" alive, as a living art form: use his music and that "school" as "canvas and brushes" and start to "paint" what comes from your(!) soul.
Some "rough" details about my sound arr.:
    The opening chords arr.:
    I’m using a pitch +5 from the 1:st Digitech 2101.
A pitch +12 from the second Digitech 2101.
A pitch +24 from the third Digitech 2101
    The "dark" chords arr.:
    I’m using a pitch + - 0 from the 1:st Digitech 2101, slightly detuned.
A pitch +12 from the second Digitech 2101.
A pitch +24 from the third Digitech 2101
These "soft chords", right before the solo:
A pitch -5 from the first Digtech 2101.
A pitch +12 from the second Digitech 2101.
A pitch +24 from the third Digitech 2101
Of course there are many many more effects and settings involved. But it would be a ’book’ to explain/describe it all.
The gear in my guitar rigg is as follows:
    - Yamaha MGP16X mixer board
    - Yamaha full range-speakers, active DXR12 x 2
    - Digitech 2101 GSP Studio Tube x 6
    - Klark Teknik EQ x 2
    - BBE 882 Sonic Maximizer x 6
    - CLE 8.0 x 2
    - Palmer Triage Amp Selector x 2
    - Allan Holdsworth Overdrive Boost
    - Strymon Big Sky reverb
    - Electro-Harmonix Synth 9 x 2
    - Korg XVP 20
    - Control One x 2
The 11-stringed guitar in the video is my "main ax" since almost 20 years. That guitar was made by luthiers on my commission and from my performance requirement. The tuning system, from "top to bottom" followed by string dimensions: g 0,007, d 0,010, bb 0,013, f 0,018w, C 0,026, G 0,036, D 0,046, G 0,060, Eb 0,074, D 0,074, C 0,074.

Always impressed by your dedication to learning new material. Really killed the keyboard solos! Question for you: How long does it take you to memorize a project like this? Do you read music notation (on sight or with practice) or just chord charts generally? PS: love your chord substitutions under the trumpet and sax solos.

    • @robertritchiesse
      @robertritchiesse  5 років тому +1

Thanks, man =) … In this case, it took me about two weeks to listen and write down the lines on tabs, make my own Holdsworthian-school version of the chords - and my 11-stringed ax version of the chords as well. And it took me about three months of practice it all. (I practiced a lot ot other stuff as well; I can’t put everything else on "hold", because of this tune.)

@@robertritchiesse I've heard you talk in the past of moving on from music when the time comes, or feeling like you can leave it behind if you so choose like you did a couple of years ago ( a long break). What i wonder is, how does someone commit so much time and energy to achieving your level of proficiency, learn new material constantly yet still feel that music can come and go. I've been playing professionally for 15+ years, and have trouble always keeping momentum forward, and i really admire your output on and dedication to your material.
PS Thanks for your answer if you get around to it, big fan!

Thanks, man! Well, in this case, it took me 1 week to analyse it all and put in on paper (11-stringed tab). Then, it took me appr. 2 months to practice it without tabs, just play - and learn a lot during the process. To me, that’s the whole point; to learn.
