Unreadable serve with bullet proof confidence, moved like a cheetah, monster forehand, great hands, at his peak unbreakable with a knack for playing big when it mattered. On a fast court you gotta like his chances against anyone who has ever picked up a racquet.

If Pete's fitness and motivation were there in the 2000s, and if he adapted a more modern racket and poly strings, he probably could've eeked out 2-3 more slams, but with the slower more homogenous playing surface and play style that favored heavy topspin, made it much tougher to win playing 90s serve and volley. He literally changed the game with his dominant serve and volley style, so much so that tennis tournaments and bodies decided to slow the game down so that most surfaces played much more similarly

His serve would still be one of the best even for todays game

Isn't it almost the same as feds?
In fact isn't Feds game just an evolution of what Sampras was doing?
I don't know, but it looks that way to me

@@daz97It is, why Federer was so good in the first place

Comparing players across generations is a fool's errand. Lots of things change. Racket, string, health and fitness technologies as well as court speeds.
It's beyond doubt that Sampras was the best of his generation.

Very difficult for serve and volleyer survive in today game, you don't find anyone, even as good as Pete, I doubt he could dominate or gain the kind of success as the past.

Tennis was faster and more entertaining back then, especially with the varied styles

He is the best because he is more offensive than the big three put together. In my book the best offensive players of all time are McEnroe, Sampras, Federer.
The best defensive players are Djokovic, Nadal

Sampras is probably the most consistent player ever. He’s the only player to stay number 1 for 6 consecutive years. He probably would have won a lot more if he went to a bigger racquet. I remember they always asking him if he would and he said no. Also he was only on tour for a short time and achieved so much where it took Novak, Federer and Nadal 20+ yrs. The 90s courts was lighting fast and they had different styles that was based on the surfaces where today everyone plays that same because that courts all play the same. You take the 90s courts it favors Sampras big time

Small error: Pete wasn't born to Costas Sampras and Sarah Steinberg: that was Pete's father Sam. Pete was born to Sam and Georgia Vroustouris

There was a lot less disparity in tennis players in the 90s. Pete had to overcome the likes of Courier, Rafter, Ivononesovic, Chang and of course Agassi.

I remember watch Sampras, a week before he win first US Open. He play Michael Chang and he dominating, and commentator say Sampras, typically, regift opponent with win, even after big lead. And. Chang beat him in 3. At US Open, he at 2-2 with Lendl and I thinking, time for Lendl to dominate. Lendl make 7 or 8 Final in a row. And opposite happen. If you watch a lot of tennis, you realize at that moment, Sampras for real. McEnroe say in press conference, play Sampras in next round, win win for him. And by that time you KNOW, McEnroe gonna lose. Pete more 'story book' than any other player I seen. Kinda the opposite of McEnroe, although McEnroe most exciting player, I seen. Pete the one with the most self knowledge. You know? What he can do. What he no handle. Pobably funniest match ever see Sampras lose, against Rafter, also in US Open. Sampras lose his marble after that. Sampras weakness, underestimate ONE player, hot shot Aussie, who by all account, not act hot shot. Nice person. Sampras a great person to watch, entire career.
