The Rings Of Power Continues To Be Awesome, And I’m Tired Of Pretending It’s Not

- Not too long ago we saw the release of the second season of the internet’s most hated show, The Rings of Power. Now I grew up on The Lord of the Rings films. I love my Tolkien fantasy world. That being said, the hate for this show is so utterly disproportionate to any rational critique that you can only wonder if people are genuine fans of the books and films, or are just riding the neckbeard bandwagon into the sunset. I tend to think it’s the latter. So against better judgement I’m airing my honest thoughts on the show, in the hopes that I can shine a little but of positivity into the ether of hatred and find some likeminded fans. Enjoy.
Me clicking here thinking it was gonna be all sarcasm lol
Well I heavily disagree with this take as the show has genuine flaws that can't be ignored, I respect you for stating your opinion however much I personally disagree with it
This man is brave to say he loves the rings of power to youtube.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
16:41 Yep, 53 haters have left their dislikes so far. My bet is that most watched just enough of your video to realise it wasn't going to be a super bias hate review, then hit that dislike video and went back to one of the review videos where the creator would rather throw themselves down a flight of stairs than give credit where credit is due. Thank you for the fair review, I love a reviewer who isn't afraid to acknowledge both the pros and cons. - FYI, I'm a big LOTR fan - I have been since the first movie came out when I was 11. I have read the Hobbit, LOTR, and Silmarillion. I have had my LORTO account for 14 years and have won a bottle of wine in LOTR trivia on a cruise I was on. Yet, because I enjoy ROP, I have been called Illiterate, that I hate Tolkien and that I have no idea about Middle Earth Canon. I wish I could say these insults were a one off, but it happens pretty often when I defend the show (One hater even said I was "Gaslighting myself into liking the show" 😂). The only thing I hate about ROP, is it has shown how toxic some fans are.
You have every right to like this show, however, most of the criticism is valid for this show.
- More than half the actions of the main characters don't make sense in the context of their own story and their own supposed knowledge
- Constantly ripping off other and better works from PJ's LotR to Star Wars and Princess Bride (but withot the necessary setup)
- Completely pointless Gandalf story, Tom Bombadil is a discount Yoda
- Convoluted timeline where you have no idea at any given moment how much time has passed since you were last in this storyline and how that lines up with the others
- Compressed timeline makes Sauron's supposed legendary cunning look like surface level deception that anyone with a half functioning brain should've been able to see through
- A billion dollar production that doesn't have money for enough extras so the whole giant city is defended by a dozen guys and a jewelsmith
- All of the above covered with memberberries and references that not only don't belong there but don't even make sense in that context
I can go on and on and on. If you guys can really look past all that and really believe it's that good - I'm really happy for you. Enjoy the show.
I on the other hand can't.
this is like my gf making a video essay about how reality tv is great, actually, and the haters just don't want to admit it 😅
You know what? Your bravery and honesty has earned you another sub. The show has its problems, buy MY GOD it's impossible to engage with this show online without being drowned in froth-mouthed hate. Good for you for battling against the tide.
I'm very happy you like it :).
Just try to not feed fuel to the fire in painting this shows only critics as either liking it despite it's flaws or just abusive Tolkien purists with no legitemate critisicms.
There are plenty of us who dislike the show who in fact do not engage in online bullying and base our dislike in more than just a childish devotion to the books or movies. Your title for example enforces this narrative of the two camps that just does not represent reality.
I think you did a great job in bringing up the points you found worse or problematic as well as the things that made the show worthwhile for you.
But truly, we need more voices who can both engage with the bad of the show and the good while sidestepping this rediculous discourse thats been cultivated around it.
The show has i argue a large amount of legitemate issues and i'd be glad to discuss them, but really just keep enjoying your show :).
I'm not the arbiter of good tv.
Cheers and good job!
Look, people can like it, people can hate it. I'm a Tolkien fan and old, and have seen way too many vid versions of other books I've read and liked, and there are ALWAYS changes, some good, some terrible. The only problem I would have is if after watching this show, some go back to the original and after reading parts, say something like, 'wait, this isn't right at all! That's not what Galadriel, et al did at all. Why can't this book be more like the show I now love.' If this show's disclaimer said something, like say, based on Tolkien's legendarium of the 2nd Age, but characters, locations, time periods have been changed for time constraints and character development.' Yeah, that's fine with me. Just don't tell me that Galadriel of Rings of Power and Galadriel of Jackson's movies are the same as Galadriel of Tolkien's writings. They aren't and can't possibly be. (although some live action depictions can be closer to the original than others)
I have dozens of pages of notes that say otherwise. And they are not lore related, they mostly aren't actually, they all have to do with pacing, direction, casting, acting, dialogue, characterization, continuity, scale, setting up and payoff, contrivances, contradictions etc. And the constant callbacks!! OMG the shamelessness... The show is mediocre, or ok at best, given its og material and budget.
I don't care for Lord of the Rings in general but I'm glad that you er Brave and open about your opinions
Season 2 is better than season 1. There's no denying that. However season 2 still has its problems
This comment can be applied to so many bad show, not half as hated as the ring of powers.
Wow! You're serious!
Fun fact, the rings of power is one of the few media pieces for older Audience to have a Hebrew dub. Among things like some Simpsons media, don't look up, the boys and gen V, invincible, bee and puppycat and nos4a2.
In Denmark, we don't really do dub for adult media either In Denmark, we don't really do dub for adult media either
In Israel, dubs are mostly for children@@lasseehrenreich5502 .
So you have chosen death.
I tried to skip all the cringe parts or parts that's just flat, grey and non Tolkien. It was very short episodes.
I disagree with your take on the show's second season being an improvement. If anything, it maintained the status quo of the first season by basically repeating the same story beats. Hobbits with unexplained adversaries and no relevance to the overall plot. The southlands having an awkward romance subplot, people going missing thanks to a nonhuman presence, and Numenorians showing up. Introducing a major elven character only for him to not feature much at all in the story. Dwarf family drama with fights then reconciliation then more fights. Galadriel having arguments and thin emotional moments with her companion in a narrative holding pattern for other plots to play out. Adar attacking innocents for the sake of the orcs only for survivors to get away after the fall of the place. Numenor having obvious good guys and bad while the general population will start cheering whenever someone starts chanting a name or makes a speech. Elves and dwarves in Eregion realizing secrets are being kept and working to find them out. Galadriel confronts Sauron and one escapes the other. Honestly, it's just season one with places and characters swapped around.
Even if I disagree with some of your points, I am so glad that this movie video just exists. The whole experience of having to just keep my own sanity away from all the haters, regardless of whether I want to participate or not, it’s just ruining the experience for me no matter what side I was on. So thank you for giving a gosh damn BREAK!
0:34 this show lost all its momentum by people having to suffer through the first season.
OMG, you did Joker's line in the title!!!!!
I still think the show has big editing and pacing problems but I don’t understand how anyone could think that Charlie Vickers performance was anything less than amazing
You have every right to like this show, and people who are attacking you for that are obviously immature. This being said, it is possible to enjoy something and still acknowledge its flaws. And, when it comes to the Rings of Power, there are a great many number of them.
I am not talking here only about the weaker plots, like the Harfoots. Even in what is happening with the Elves and the Dwarves, the writing is usually very bad. Out of the top of my head, I can give several examples: Sauron starting taking all the decisions in Eregion without anyone questioning it; the Rings that require mithril for their creation, except when they do not; some rings making people invisible, but not others (is it a bug or a feature?); the secret passage that no one uses except Galadriel; the Orcs that can fight in sunlight, when it burnt them in season 1; Elrond and Arondir still being alive after the battle, when the Orcs would obviously have killed them after they lost their fight against Adar (and Arondir was actually stabbed twice...); the Orcs being given feelings and caring for their family, but at the same time murdering people for fun and slicing the throat of horses just to show that they are evil; the Dwarves cheering about "loyalty", when they are about to disobey to their king; the Dwarves, at the end of the season, seemingly completely ignoring that there is now a huge threat in their home; the Dwarves sending an army that arrives within minutes on the battlefield; etc.
Maybe this does not bother you and the well-crafted visuals and decent acting is enough for you. But I believe it is understandable that a lot of people find it a deal-breaker.
Yey! Someone who agrees with me! It's a good show! It's not perfect, but it's interesting, beautiful to watch and at times thrilling. Thanks for letting me see a review that celebrates what is worth celebrating, not only picking out what could have been better. :) I'd rather have a pretty good show than no show at all!
I will say that I think Halbrand/Galadriel was a deconstruction of the dark brooding dude becomes a hero trope. He is written as an abusive narcissist who exploits her and gaslights her and does not react well when she turns his proposal down. It's meant to be an abusive relationship and you're supposed to be happy when she kicks him in the face and gets away. The fact that so many fans don't see that is a commentary on them more than the show.
Respectfully Disagree
It's ok to be wrong. It's ok to have shit taste. I won't unsub. I promise.
Lmaoooo
The most frustrating part of this show is that Galadriel and Elrond kissed😑😐. It's really weird considering the fact that she's married and he marries her daughter in the future so... I mean they definitely have chemistry (more then frigging Celeborn😒 and Galadriel) and they would be so good together🥲 but dunno just.......icky
Smarty pants I have a recommendation of a video you must do do a video on how miraculous will nerf the hell out of Felix in season 6, think about it Felix is the smartest and most powerful character in the show, he stole all the miraculouses in a day, he litrelly had the peacock miraculous for a few seconds and he litrelly came back to Paris and won against ladybug and monarch (and yes cat noir wasn't their be cause the writing didn't care to have adrien interact with his own cousin) by creating a sentimonster that incinerated the entire city Felix was so invincible that their was no possible lucky charm to defeat this guy with and lucky charms are the answer to any problem so this pretty much establishes Felix as the smartest and most powerful character in the entire miraculous universe, think about it despite how powerful lil a was in the London special even she needed a lucky charm to beat her so basically Felix can't be stopped by anyone in the show so basically the only way for lila to pose any threat to the heroes is basically making Felix lose all of his brain cells and all of his competence from th e previous seasons.
Pursonally as it's own separate fantasy show it's okay but as a lotr show there's a ton of big changes that contradict tockiens world it feels and looks more like game of thrones then lord of the rings. so as a separate stand Elon series it's good it still has it's issues but still. but as a lotr series, it's a rematch of game of thrones but iver way I have no problem with people liking the series, even I like curtain parts of it.
If ya like it, ya like it.
You will be hearing from my lawyers
For me the first season was a bore. I only really cared about Durin and Elrond and their history and dynamic. The second season made me care about the characters and was way more fun.
Theres no problem with liking something. I mean, I like the Eragon movie. However, you cant deny it completely obliterates the lore of Middle Earth, and is a terrible adaptation of events in that world.
Yeah, i also am kinda fond of this prequel show of J.R.R Tolkien's Middle Earth!
Many people have no problem to enjoy this show. That is not a bad thing. I for example always enjoy catastrophic movie called The Core (Aron Eckhart, Hillary Swank). However i would never make arguments, that obviously B movie is almost A. Objective problems of RoP is said over and over again and they really exist. So enjoy your 5/10 serie, but don' t try create illusion, that it is 7/10, therefore almost great 8/10.
i didnt hate season 1 but it was not very good too... but season 2 i thought was cool
You're the first UA-camr I saw with this take, and it's _so_ refreshing! I haven't finished the video yet, but I have to give my two cents.
I thought season 1 was alright. Not as bad as people said, some great moments, Galadriel was a really interesting character instead of the Mary Sue people kept calling her, but also a lot of really boring stuff. Honestly I wasn't even gonna watch season 2 if not for a friend wanting to watch it with me. And _boy_ did season 2 blow me away. Sauron's storyline was magnetic to watch. He was a fantastic character, and it showed his influence spreading throughout Middle Earth every bit as well as the movies did, better even because it had more time to work with.
Most of the storylines I disliked in season 1 were massively improved, and while there were still parts I found boring, the vast majority of this season was great, and at times awe-inspiring. That slow-mo shot of Sauron walking through the streets of Eregion, pretending to defend it while actually engineering its destruction, gave me goosebumps and lives rent-free in my head.
I've seen very few good-faith criticisms of it. In fact, most criticisms I think kinda make it seem like the people making them didn't actually watch the show. Most of the supposed logic gaps in the show are either explained in-universe, or make perfect sense if you think about them for more than 5 seconds or give any room for subtext whatsoever.
Not that there aren't valid complaints to be had, I sure have a few, but the vast majority I've seen are very blatantly wrong.
If you haven't already, I actually recommend watching The Acolyte, as it had a very similar negative response due to superficial elements that honestly didn't really matter. It's a somewhat flawed but very kickass show that eclipses most Disney Star Wars (except Andor because Andor is GOAT), and most people never gave it a chance because reasons.
I love this show as well tbh
*You’re brave I’ll give you that. You definitely won’t get excommunicated from the fandom.* 😂😂😂😂😂
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SAYING THIS!!! I literally have no words, just thanks a lot. So sick of the close minded, elitist "smart"/"real fans" who think they're right. Just let people's creations be, let people tell the stories they want to tell, if you don't like it, wait for another and stop being so immature. So here's a likeminded fan! :) I'm obsessed with Tolkein and the movies (RoP gave me the final push to read the Silmarillion and I love it so much!!). I was super skeptical about RoP at first because i just believed what everyone said about it, BUT BOY was i wrong. Love Galadriel's character and how it contrasts with/will be later, love Elrond and the dwarves, Elendil is amazing, Numenor is the coolest, Halbrand is still my fav (part of me hasn't excepted the Sauron thing lol), such great acting, soundtrack, basically everything. Not the biggest fan of the harfoot plot, but i love how they worked in this whole history for them. Love how they did sauron. I acknowledge there are differences, but i think its great to have variety in interpetation/expression (also, the elrond kiss was obviously a diversion?? Like calm down). So yeah, the Tolkien fandom is predominantly toxic as heck which is really sad, but I'm glad it's not everyone! (Also sorry for contributing to the stain on the fandom lol but i'm still standing on this creaking raft of a ship ;) (Hal and Galadriel are just a vibe to me and I don't care). Thanks again! I greatly appreciate how open minded you are when talking about stuff, actually seeing it from all angles.
Are you cereal? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I honestly respect you for voicing your dissenting perspective, and there is a good bit of phony hate toward this show… however… ROP truly is an insult to the legacy of LOTR. The trilogy is possibly the greatest artistic achievement of humanity. The music, dialogue, story, acting, maturity, and beauty were frankly never before seen in cinema, and haven’t been seen since. ROP may be at best a “fine” generic fantasy show, but from the cheap characters, pathetic story lines, and lazy writing, it is frankly undeniable that the creators are simply baiting true LOTR fans by taking its name. If it was poaching any other franchise, the reaction wouldn’t be as severe. But this is LOTR we’re talking about, and its legacy NEEDS to be vehemently protected
I'm only at the start of this video and I'm already saying: "Hell yeah man, speak your truth!" Also, the fact that you released this on Charlie Vickers' (Sauron's) birthday is 👌.
It's clear at this point following the end of S2 that a lot of these hate-watchers continue to churn out RoP videos because hate sells, hardly acknowledging (if at all) where S2 does in fact improve upon the first (ex. the removal of the mystery box and getting actual Sauron, Galadriel's character development, Elrond's sass and better hair, Durin's storyline, Adar, Tom Bombadil, etc.). I've even seen stupid "critiques" mentioned like "Why is S2 starting with a flashback?" when HELLO, Peter Jackson's trilogy opens with a flashback! (It's also unfortunate how they'll so often call genuine ROP enjoyers "Amazon shills," refusing to believe any actual fans of the show exist outside of being paid off. And then there's X/Twitter, where haters will just randomly show up to fans' posts about it and spread harassment. Freaking sad, man). This isn't to say I haven't seen fairer reviews out there before now that actually and rationally break down the show's good and bad, but you'll most often have to sift through the trash first.
Thank you, we need more ROP positivity like this to combat against the bad. 🙏
Edit: Oops, just hit your anti-Haladriel chapter. 😅 Just want to say that I know full well Celeborn's coming back, and I want Galadriel to have some happiness again by reuniting with him after everything she's been through, but what I largely find most intriguing about the Sauron and Galadriel dynamic is the chance to explore them as being bound by their rings in an eternal light vs. dark opposition, especially with their knowledge of each other's minds. Sue me, but I think that's cool. 😊
lol I thought he said he liked it. every thing he pointed out as a negative lol. is he being sarcastic?
I think Rings of Power is better than what it gets credit for. T.V. shows and movies are never exactly like the book. Lord of the Rings was no exception. People have gotta realize that J.R.R. Tolkien left a lot of things up in the air and film producers have had a lot of fun with that. Rings of Power did a great job on Sauron. They did well with Gandalf. They even introduced Tom Bombadil, a character that I never thought I'd see on a T.V. screen. I have found the series enjoyable personally.
I agree it was a lot better. I think you remove the harfits and you have a great show. If I ever rewatch I’ll just skip harfit scenes and tell ya how much better it is lol
cashed your amazon check yet?
I've never agreed with a video title more in my life. I'm not gay, but I feel like admitting to liking this show and coming out are basically the same thing 😂
I also like The Rings of Power, and honestly find it refreshing. I also enjoy Peter's LOTR - I think you can like both for what they are, and still be a fan of Tolkein's works. Artistic interpretations are always different, but I see that as a joy and spice of life. Nothing that happens in TROP can ever tarnish how I feel about LOTR, because its essentially a whole new and completely different team of artists working on something that inspires them. To me - if you don't like the thing, then dont watch it and dont consume it. No one is forcing you to watch something you dont like.
"They are forcing themselves to watch something just so they can be angry" really struck me here - because that really is what it is. Misdirected anger over something that has little effect on you and your person. Why be angry about something you dont have to participate in. Let people enjoy their thing, and you can go enjoy your things.
This video is JUST to get the rage views and subs of apologists
I respect your opinion, but to say rings of power has great action is kind of ridiculous and stretching it. The battle of eregion is a tactically inept, poorly paced, and horribly edited mess. You have no idea how big the armies are, the tactics and seige machines are moronic, and any heroic moment is laid mute due to characters we don't know or care about.
Delustion lmaoo
Finally, i always thought i am the only person who likes this show.
Oh man i bet the dislike to like ration on this video is absolute trash😂😂 like the show 😂
dummypants
😱
Different opinion to you that although controversial is still as valid as any other pants
Im sure if Tolkien watched it he'd be thrilled🤢🤢🤮
