The Brains never recorded a bad song. I was lucky to see them play in New Orleans at the Dream Palace in 1982. The best seat in the house was occupied by a sassily-dressed, badass-looking punk chick who had passed out cold before the band played the first note. Tom Gray walked out to her table, sat down and serenaded her. She never looked up. Later when she did rouse from her drunken slumber, her friends told her what she’d missed. It was an unforgettable performance from an awesome rock band!
OMG, the many nights spent in the 688 Club! I wish I had been in this video, and I too saw them at the club. Saw Romeo Void at the Agora Ballroom, those were the days of New Music. The Brains, REM, Oh OK, Indigo Girls, Atlanta and Athens were on fire.
Yeah. Atlanta and Athens had some great bands around that time. Don't forget B 52s, The Producers, Guadalcanal Diary, Swimming Pool Q's, Love Tractor, Pylon, so many others.
I saw them in Greensboro about 1981. They really killed it, the whole club was amazed, rocking for maybe 2 hours straight. I still have the album. Its really a shame they are not better known.
It seems like yesterday that I was hanging out at the 688 club after work. I look back on those days now and realize it was a very special time and place. one thing was certain that whenever the Brains played you could bet that the place was packed. I remember when the video was filmed. it was cold as hell. I decided to watch from inside the door. I wish now I had gotten outside and danced on spring street in the cold. long live Steve May, Shiela and Tony. it was an awesome place to hang out and have a good time. So many good bands and so much talent.
Grandparents can use this video to tell their grandbabies they used to know Atlanta when the Connector was only six lanes and you had to cross your heart and say a prayer when trying to enter the northbound lane from North Avenue, by the Varsity. Forty-plus years and this song still get the blood pumping. The video quality is better than the one prior; but the sound is still too low. Needs to blast loudly!
Holy hell...Ive been looking for this video for 28 years. This is one of the best songs ever wtitten. Christ People! Listen! Spread the freakin Word! Thank GOD for DSL!
Saw them in Denver in 83.They were on the same bill as The Members.( UK).Also had the privilege to program this track this tune as a DJ. You are missed.
688-what memories...lived there in 1984 and used to go there several times a week.....I liked it over metroplex. Saw the Stranglers and alot of local bands there.
Keith Christopher is one of the most amazing artists I have ever seen! He is wearing the yellow jacket in this video. His Bass playing can only be believed after seeing him.
The last time I saw them was at Rumors at N. Decatur and Clairmont. Rumors occupied the space now occupied by the Mattress Factory next to the now closed Rainbow grocery. The Brains were poised for great things. For whatever reason they didn't make it to the next big step industry-wise. Such a shame. I always liked their shows.
This song was huge for us back in high school. We liked these dudes as much as the psychedelic furs. If these cats released a cd, we would definitely buy one. Good sh!t.
I had left Atlanta by the time they made this video but read about it years later. I too never missed a Brains show at 688 back in the early days. I still listen to them often.
This is exactly how this sounded playing in a club in early 1983. The pre-Dolby Rockamerica releases (pre-Sept 1984) sounded just like this. This track started off quiet as they faded it in for the video mix. Exactly as you would have heard it in my sets in March of 1983.
Hey, No , that's 35 cents for sodas.Look at the sign again. Gas was more like $1.20 in '82. The last time gas was 35cents was about 1974. Unfortunately, I'm just old enough to remember.
But the greatest venue ever in Atlanta was Alex Cooley's Electric Ballroom. 2 to 4 bucks at the door would get you in to some great bands just past their heyday and the new emerging bands. I am pretty sure that The Electric Ballroom was the first Southern tour for Kiss and Rush, as well as many others that later hit hugely, and I was there for most of them. Much fun.
I saw the Brains live at the Palladium in NYC opening for the Kinks. Midway through "Raeline" Tom threw his thick spectacles into his keyboards. I guess he went to the contacts after that- They were something else as a lead in to the Davies bros.
Speaking of that Mercury album, was the release party at that Agora? I think I was there. I mean, I know I was there for something. It's been thirty years. Give me a break.
damn...I don't remmber that. .35 a gallon? I bet people were bitchin about the price then also.I do remember this song/video though. Saw it on the old TV 69 Video show which predatd MTV.I've seriouslt been humming this song for almost 30 years since then and unable to find it Anywhere until recently on UA-cam. just cool.
I doubt you people will believe me, but my dad is the drummer for the Brains, Charles Wolff.
Why wouldn’t we believe you? It’s not that crazy lol

@@RTRoberto Please don't forget Arms Akimbo! And the Swinging Richards. But, nobody could touch The Brains! Not REM, the B's, NOBODY!
Looks like i came to this gig a lil too late! Wished i could've been there. Hadn't heard of The Brains till now, my kinda music! Brains Rock! 🕺👍🤘

Had a blast dancing out in the street at 688 on that very cold night. Wouldn't have missed it.
The Brains were a great band.
I saw these guys at an outdoor show on the mall in Wash., D.C. July 4th 1979. The Brains were great, the yippies weren't. I'm a bigger fan than ever.
The best of times and the worst of times...

Rest easy, Tom.
Very cool song, very cool band...
hell yes, Janet Darr's Rock Around The World video show every night at 10 pm on channel 69 in Atlanta, I have several vhs tapes of these shows

Cool! And Tom can still be found singing and playing slide with Delta Moon :-)
Tom was a very cool guy back in the day.Probably still is.
Was there 3 days before this shot
Michael Moriority's mom is on UA-cam! I remember this night so well.

Anyone at the Peter Tosh show at the Agora? You remember the one. A little known band that called themselves 'U2' opened for him. The room was asmog!

fond memories of the 688 Club, always more girls than guys in the mens room

Notice the gas prices in Metro Atlanta back in '82 at the 2:00 mark: 35 cents for a gallon of regular!!!
No, I believe those were prices for fountain drinks.
