Developer here. Mentions of content from one game in another by the same studio aren't uncommon. It's common practice to copy code between codebases and then make changes in the new, rather than creating everything from scratch every time. It's extremely likely that various people at Valve have worked on "a" version of half life 3 over the years. They've probably started then abandoned work on it several times over the past 20 years. Priorities change, imminent releases need to siphon people from one team to another, stuff gets put on the back burner for too long, technology moves on and stuff gets abandoned. Then a few years go by and some new hire who loved the old game finds the experimental stuff and there start being internal calls to pick it back up again. Depending on Valve's corporate environment, they might even have developers working on experimental things during down time, trying to make something they can take to management to convince them to go all-in on a new project. And even if they don't, it's still useful code that maybe a year later somebody fetches and cannibalizes to use it for something else. So I don't mean to kill the enthusiasm here, for all I know maybe there are working on an official release. But references to half life 3 stuff in other games that quickly get patched out when they're noticed, is not a strong indicator that half life 3 is definitely in the works.

Tried Deadlock and I wasn't impressed. Maybe my smooth brain can't understand hero shooters. I hope in my lifetime I'll see half life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3.

Half life Alex came out 13 years after part 2. Companies regularly pick up old franchises. In regard to Alex it has only been 4 years since it’s release, not a lot of time in regards to modern game development.
@@anyname2169 the majority of people have not been able to play HL Alyx because it’s a VR only title. The no VR mods just don’t cut it. We need a real keyboard and mouse game.

open world is not really half life, so i'm not sure how much it will fit a half life game, half life 1 and 2 are linear in design.
