SMALL SCALE painting & weathering - Tips & Tricks to create realistic results on the 1/72 TIGER1

  • Painting and weathering your models is one of the most enjoyable stages in the hobby, well at least it is for me, but it is a stage where some armour modellers freeze for fear of failure.
    Today I will take you through the steps to paint a German 3 tone camouflage and then dust and weather the model to help present it in a realistic way.
    This model is a little tricker because it is 1/72nd scale, so the painting and weathering needs to be downscaled to suit. I'll take you through the process in this step by step tutorial and help you get better results with your own models.
    I've said it before but Ill say it again... this Vespid Models Tiger 1 (Early Production) is such a beautiful model... and if you were only going to build one 72nd scale armour kit in your life then this should be the one. Its awesome!

    If you can’t do it in Braille scale, you can’t do it in any scale and you can certainly do it. Brilliant job and keep going. Cheers, Any.

    As an old-fashioned 'less is more' modeller, I was shouting 'that's enough weathering!' about 20 mins from the end! 🙂I tend to prefer slightly more subtle weathering effects with washes and pigments in these smaller scales. That said, I think your model looks absolutely fantastic and is very inspiring. I've recently bought the kit myself, and hope it turns out as good. I've also subscribed!

      😆 I’m picturing you shouting at the screen! 😆 It’s funny because I’ve been accused of not weathering my models enough in the past. I try to use references where I can to minimise the guesswork but ultimately it comes down to what you like to look at sitting there in your cabinet.
      Really appreciate you joining in and your subscription. Welcome to the community 🙏☝️🍻

    Hey Clayton, just found your channel and love it. I took a modeling break for a couple years, and coming back and seeing some of your techniques is like a breath of fresh air. Really like your approach for the multi-stage base layer. Everything else is cool as well. Looking forward to your next videos.

    I am really impressed with how this one turned out Clayton. Your attention to detail with the painting and weathering at such a small scale was a joy to watch. I have enough issues with 1/35 scale kits and the small parts that are seemingly increasing in every new kit nowadays, let alone try to master a 1/72 project. However, you nailed it with this one my friend!
    I like that in these tutorials and build videos, you explain each step, and how you approach the various phases of building, painting, and weathering your models. It has certainly helped me make some changes in my own modelling experience, and I thank you for that. Cheers for now, and keep the content coming mate!

    Thanks for a thoroughly entertaining and inspirational video.
    I have been building models for wargaming since I was a boy and will be seventy next year. You are absolutely correct when you say that fear of spoiling your work can be a barrier to trying new techniques and pushing out of your comfort zone. You made things look so easy and your clear and straightforward explanation is really appreciated.
    I tend to work with 15mm and 28mm scales and am sure that your tips will come in handy with my next project. Your guidance on weathering is very helpful as this is an area to which I am returning after spending quite a few years on production line painting of 28mm Napoleonic and historical miniatures for my wargaming.
    Having downsized in a house move I have sold my historical collection and I’m venturing into Bolt Action and 15mm WWII and so looking forward to returning to building and painting AFVs once again.
    I have subscribed and will be checking out your past and future videos for more priceless info.
    Thanks again and best wishes to you for Christmas and the New Year from up here in the cold and wet UK.
    Cheers

    After this I am going to take the plunge and test the water. Like so many of your videos they are informative and educational also entertaining.
    Keep up this great work Clayton you are an inspiration to this hobby.

  • @workbenchhobbies4316
    @workbenchhobbies4316  7 місяців тому

    Ok….few issues there. Tamiya is an acrylic lacquer Humbrol is an enamel. They aren’t the same.
    Re the smell…spraying at high pressure and dumping volumes of paint can make it very smelly. Lower pressure and controlled spraying can help reduce the odour.
    Mig and ak acrylics are not the easiest to spray at times though. Are you thinning them with anything? I’d suggest buying their brand appropriate thinner and thinning them to about 30%thinner 70% paint as a starting point. Try pressure at 15psi and and see how you go.
    Hope that helps 🙏☝️🍻

    • @workbenchhobbies4316
      @workbenchhobbies4316  7 місяців тому

      Hey 👋 That’s a complex question because there are so many variables. I’m assuming you are spraying with true acrylics…? It’s all about thinning the paint and dropping your air pressure to 12-15 psi. If it’s still happen use a retarder. Use the brand retarder that matches the paint you are using to make this a little easier… OR…use lacquers and watch your life change.
      Appreciate you joining in 💪🍀

    • @Samo-sn5yt
      @Samo-sn5yt 7 місяців тому

      @@workbenchhobbies4316 I primarily use MIG and Vallejo acrylics yes.
      Given what you've said, maybe it's my psi that's the problem? I often have it set within 20-35 range, just because my sight isn't the best and I can see it spraying onto the surface then haha. I'll try dropping my psi in my next session, thankyou!
      I have also tried lacquers (Tamiya and Humbrol), and they are great to work with, but fumigate my room when in use- too cold to be going out into the garage at this time of year!
      And again, thankyou for your response, loving your content!
