You don't often see isolating-variable-transormators, electronic loads and capacitor discharge tools in use here on UA-cam. Great to see them being used by you. Your diagnoses are very focused - something tells me you have an electrical engineering background. Thank you for indirectly introducing your equipment. I was looking for a "cheap" electronic load for a while.
Thank you! I do enjoy my toys. The money I make selling repaired items tends to get rolled back into test equipment. The Kunkin load has been surprisingly useful while not terribly expensive.
Hello Sir: I have several consoles I am working on. one console has the long blue light then turns off. All voltages are where they need to be, there is a hot spot at the HDMI port but nothing shorted , no shorts on the HDMI encoder, would an encoder fail but not show any shorts, I am thinking that the issue is with the encoder, using a thermal heat gun the RAM and SSD come on. The second console does not have the 5 v Rail present at all. nothing is shorted in the 5 volt rail area, when I inject 5 v at that rail the unit beeps but no blue light, I am thinking that the South Bridge maybe the issue even though there are no shorts? Is my logic potential accurate? Any comments , suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated. MJ
hi, I have ps5 and non of the ports has power so I can't synchronize controller. I have checked the filters and ports itself but nothing unusual. any ideas?. controller doesn't function even in safe mode
we got a ps5 last year, amazing little machine and first console our house has seen since the ps2. While I'm in college he tells me there were ants in the console and when turning it on there was smoke. Now that I'm home checking on it, there's no signs of life at all. Sony wants basically full price and I'm not capable/have enough time to fix it. It's dead, a little over a year old. What a damn shame. Hope we had someone like you here.
hello, what's the name of that tip with the blue handle you use? it is very convenient instead of the classic tweezers. I would like to buy it somewhere
It is actually the plastic handle from a cheap dental tool. The original metal pick had broken off so I attached a needle into the tip. It is useful for "nudging" chips.
@@ToltecMerc thank you, I've never done a South bridge but I'm thinking I'll have to at some point..I thought pre tinning those pads would help. Thanks man.
Yeah I put probe in a hole as close to the South Bridge as I can, heated to around 120C. After pre-heat, it removed easily with 400C air from above. I try to be more gentle when installing. 320-340C air from above. SB came from AliExpress. Game Century Store.
My ps5 got zapped from I assume the tv. Tv is dead along with everything that was connected to it. Ps5 only beeps but won’t power on. Will not go into safe mode either. 12v coming from the power supply is good. Then I noticed the encoder chip is reading grounded. Could this be my power issue?
How much would this cost at a repair shop to fix because mine doesn’t turn on or beep just like that but I don’t know if Sony will take mine for repair even tho I got warranty because I think my cousin broke it by plugging in a hard drive and downloading games to it because it stopped working like a couple hours or a day after he did that
I wasn’t home when he did it but I got home and it was already plugged in and the games were already downloaded so it was too late to unplug everything and delete the stuff
A year later I am in the same place as you. I had a dead PS5 and was hoping for a dead power supply, and it was dead but after I fixed it the PS5 was still dead. After that I realized that I had multiple short circuits that led me to the south bridge. I haven't downloaded it yet because I'm looking for one, I'm not sure about aliexpress what I'm going to get, so I looked at a trusted site. The price there is around $40 is that ok, they are still quite expensive?
Have one now with a beep on beep off. Found a bad F7003 fuse. Replaced it and no change. I then found a short to ground on the 12v rail coming in off the PSU pins. No idea where else to look. Checked over the board a few times for a couple hours. Any ideas? Wondering if it's a faulty MOSFET on the power fets. Great video as usual Tolt. You are one bad mo fo. Love your videos.
@@orion310591RS it could have been a capacitor but experience has shown when there is a short across a capacitor directly under the SouthBridge, it is the SouthBridge 99% of the time.
My Ps5 turns on and wants to run but the problem is it turns off every 5 seconds it starts blinking turns white and shuts off do uk wat could be the problem?
hello Sir. I was testing my mother board and found short to ground at the south bridge, but also tested the opposite side of the processor and seeing allot of short to ground on both sides of the caps or inductors. is this normal or does this stem back from the south bridge. I don't want to put allot of time or money if processor is damaged. Thanks
The low resistance readings around the processor are normal. You will probably read around 1 ohm. The shorts under the SouthBridge are not normal. Remember there is also a 3V battery on the board and that voltage goes to the SouthBridge also. Your meter will give you false readings if you are in resistance mode and connect it to a voltage source.
@@ToltecMerc Thanks Sir.. So it sounds like my south bridge is where I need to start since I do not have the 1.8 and 3.3V in that area. Is it possible to remove the south bridge without a preheat station and just use of hot air station?
@@MKJ-ei8kt it is possible but difficult. The main difficulty comes when trying to install the replacement without killing the SouthBridge with excessive heat. That is the advantage of the pre-heater. Less heat is needed on the actual part.
@@ToltecMerc I am awaiting for a preheater so I can perform the job, one question I had is the chip alignment, are there marks that I can go by go align the chip so the solder pads align with the board pads?

Interesting to learn that the PS5 absorbs so much more heat when changing the southbridge.
It seemed that way. Of course it is a larger PCB than a PS4 slim.
