Experimenting with projected textures and volumetrics. Public workshop download: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile... Inspired by: • Garry's mod volumetric... discord: / discord
As a VFX artist, I cant wait for you to get hired as a Tech artist or VFX artist. With this portfolio, you surely will. This is some impressive stuff to just casually add onto gmod! Outstanding! Edit: btw im only mentioning work because you said you could use money, not to put a fire under you or anything like that. Just wanted to compliment your awesome projects!
I wonder how it would react if you gave it a name with ent_setname, walked right up to it so it's as close to you as possible, and typed "ent_fire setparent !player"
HELLO!!!!!!!!! theres a whole community of people who do gmod art, and good volumetrics is something we pretty much dont have, there is volumetrics on another tool(soft lamps) on the workshop but its pretty doodoo, we would benefit greatly and be forever in your debt for something like this
I still remember playing Left 4 Dead on the 360 in 2008 and being amazed at the shadows my flashlight could cast If only 11 year old me could see stuff like this
i really do like this a lot it would be great for all sorts of things, i could imagine holographic projections and even implementation into more maps for more cinematic/storytelling effects!
I'm suddently really into what you're doing on your channel! Before I just watched a Gwater update and some gwater2 updates but you post other cool things! Definitely looking forward for your projects! And some more voice commentary since listening to you explaining the project is very nice!
I dont know if youll read this but a possible suggestion to add to this addon it would be cool to have this have a toggle were it auto spawns like CSM and well follows you around as if it was attached to you.
You just never disappoint do you? Now we just need some realistic water waves on gmod water like the one in gm construct or realistic car damage. Gwater 2 is looking pretty unbelievable good btw 👍👍👍 Just unbelievable work Mr. Mee
Keep in mind this may not work in unity because im actually abusing the source engines bad shadow calculations But I'll try my best given a youtube comment.. 1. Take a bunch of subdivided planes and orient them onto axises x,y, and z. (in this video im using 300 planes per object, double sided) 2. use an additive material which responds only to projected textures and lights. (No envmaps or ambient lighting!) Also make sure the material has the 'nocull' property which means the texture renders on both sides. (The lighting from the front of the triangle should appear identical to the back.) 3. Render that to a texture which has significantly less resolution than the screen. This drastically speeds up rendering and puts significantly less strain on the GPU. I am using a texture of size ScreenWidth / 8, ScreenHeight / 8, although / 4 is probably just fine (Also make sure the texture you are rendering to has the same depth information as the scene so fog does not render through walls!) 4. Take the texture and blur it using a shader. (Gmod has one built in, I think its just basic gaussian) 5. Reapply the texture in screen space, (additive) 6. Done
Me: Wow that's really cool for making posters. Also me: *Sees CSM working with this* I GOD DAMN NEED IT! Seriously this looks awesome! (Could also be because I love volumetric lighting :D) Also a question. Would it have dupe and save support? So for example if you would use CSM and would want the whole map to be affected you could just create a save instead of needing spawn it in every time.
I found a bug. Whenever I spawn in the volume cloud, The viewmodels for modern warfare weapons dissapears. The only thing visible is the effect they have on the cloud. It becomes visible again whenever I delete the cloud.
Wow, this is amazing, and the fact that its real time and judging by the fps count not too expensive makes it look like magic, I wonder if there are any limitations?
Published to workshop due to popular demand!

Call it "Volumeetric Lighting"
im soo happy to see the mod..FINNLY I WILL MAKE MOIVES WITH THIS....and credits will go to the mods creator i subed!
thanks
you should upload all of your projects on the workshop but not gwater 2 you already know why

with this you can get a real job like graphics engineer
yeah, he can finish gwater2 and shut the discord down so all the jackass losers in there can shut the hell up and stop shitting on this guy.
I swear, every year his projects gradually become more crazy and impossible
He's just pushing the source engine to it's limits :)
(He will be the one to create sburb )
Valve: We need source 2 so that we can make volumetric smoke and lighting
Mee: (creates volumetrics on a 20 year old engine)
we better make sure this guy stays on his hero arc because if he goes full villain were all doomed
Ah yes destroying the world as we know it with volumetric lighting
@@shadesoftimeblinding our eyes
@@shadesoftimeHe's going to make everything shit and foggy and we can't see while driving :C
my villain ark was 2018-2019 when i used e2 to exploit and crash servers

Man achieves Source 3 in Source 1
Imagine attaching that entity to the player, so the effect appears everywhere
I wonder how it would react if you gave it a name with ent_setname, walked right up to it so it's as close to you as possible, and typed "ent_fire setparent !player"

Not to mention the potential for animation
YES!!!
yea the old way to do it is just the poorly made half-life 2 fake volcmetrics
oh yea this is like soft lamps non-advanced version
lol
Just when I thought it couldn't get any cooler, you added colors.
bro is gonna make their own source 2
he wont let source rot in the shadow of s2
I still remember playing Left 4 Dead on the 360 in 2008 and being amazed at the shadows my flashlight could cast
If only 11 year old me could see stuff like this
Dude's about to port Blender's EEVEE to gmod
While seeing volumetric lighting in the source engine isn't surprising (if you use SFM for 8 years)
To see it in gmod is actually really cool!
i love how he casually drops not only a video but also my jaw at the same time
This bro can't stop improving source through lua
cant wait for cinema servers to start using this, come to think of it using gwater2 to simulator throwing soda cups would be nice too...
The chain links in the fence showing up in the light’s fog blew my mind
Mee trying not to be the best and most talented gmod developer challange
99.999% fail
we are burning our PC with this one 🗣️ 🔥
bro's the source engine wizard, for real.
Please, never stop cooking.
Your work is impressive.
i really do like this a lot it would be great for all sorts of things, i could imagine holographic projections and even implementation into more maps for more cinematic/storytelling effects!
I would be super cool to have a boat scene here there’s fog and you can see the lighthouse light shining through the fog
I was thinking in the beginning of the video "god rays would be awesome with this" and then you pulled out the CSM editor.
I'm suddently really into what you're doing on your channel! Before I just watched a Gwater update and some gwater2 updates but you post other cool things!
Definitely looking forward for your projects!
And some more voice commentary since listening to you explaining the project is very nice!
Waiting for RTX from this guy
this mod is pretty much just *_WACKY SCHMACKY LIGHT DOODIDDLES!!!!!!!!!_*
Everything this guy posts continues to blow my mind.
oooo a competitor to Gmod with RTX
Я уважаю что ты делаешь чувак.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING SO LONG FOR THIS DAY!
this could possibly mean gmod can replicate style of source filmmaker in future at any moment
how are u so good at rendering things, this is so amazing!
Looks amazing!
AWESOME WORK BRO I LOVE U
I dont know if youll read this but a possible suggestion to add to this addon it would be cool to have this have a toggle were it auto spawns like CSM and well follows you around as if it was attached to you.
bro casually added realistic shadow lighting
Bro did really say *R T X*
my fnaf saves are going to be next level with this
bros making s&box look like sadbox
Absolutely stunning
Can you change the strenght of the volumetric or somthing like that. Sorry i dontrealy understand how it works so i might be wrong?
Very interesting! Looks very cool!
Another day, another crazy Mee project.
🤯😭 SO GOOD!!!!
This would be really good for some sort of projector in gmod
theres volumetric blending? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP!!!!!!
another great addon as always
imagine being a god
mee doesn't need to imagine
this is actually so cool
Finally, Alan Wake 1 in Garry's Mod
you're insane Mee, you beast
great work!
Bro that's so cool omg, we need this!
The Volume Menu to me very much reminisces the Source 2 volumetric volume control entity. Very cool stuff btw!
Bro is cooking again 🗣️🗣️🗣️🔥🔥🔥
i can already see myself turning on CSM, puting a giant box over the whole map, and watching my PC explode
Hello mr.Mee I have a question: gwater 2 isn’t do game slow?
You just never disappoint do you? Now we just need some realistic water waves on gmod water like the one in gm construct or realistic car damage. Gwater 2 is looking pretty unbelievable good btw 👍👍👍 Just unbelievable work Mr. Mee
sick as hell man
I can imagine a lot of gmoders who could use this addon to make good animations
Real Volumetrics
Another gmod video! Nice
Impressive! Now make the double slit experiment recreatable in gmod
thank u very much
disgustingly good
That woule be perfect for scenes. Nice
amazing
well done!
5:28 is my favorite one
This will be gmod in 2014.
No, wait...
This dude is turning the source engine from a buggy mess into a modern-day game engine.
I bet that the next mod you will make will be gmod on HLA
ЛЕГЕНДА, ГЕНИЙ ДААААА
thats epic 👍
Imagine if they showed this in the 2003 tech demo.
5:30 beautiful
I would get back to making pictures in garry's mod if this comes out
That's a pretty sexy effect for gmod standards, I must admit.
Oh boy this should be good for posing 👍
Amazing
pls release this when ur done with it, working on a animation and it will be so helpful. anyways this is really cool
And then he makes gaussian splatting renderer using these volumetrics
Can you give a basic explanation of the method used here? I'm really curious how i'd go about implementing something similar in Unity
Keep in mind this may not work in unity because im actually abusing the source engines bad shadow calculations
But I'll try my best given a youtube comment..
1. Take a bunch of subdivided planes and orient them onto axises x,y, and z. (in this video im using 300 planes per object, double sided)
2. use an additive material which responds only to projected textures and lights. (No envmaps or ambient lighting!) Also make sure the material has the 'nocull' property which means the texture renders on both sides. (The lighting from the front of the triangle should appear identical to the back.)
3. Render that to a texture which has significantly less resolution than the screen. This drastically speeds up rendering and puts significantly less strain on the GPU. I am using a texture of size ScreenWidth / 8, ScreenHeight / 8, although / 4 is probably just fine
(Also make sure the texture you are rendering to has the same depth information as the scene so fog does not render through walls!)
4. Take the texture and blur it using a shader. (Gmod has one built in, I think its just basic gaussian)
5. Reapply the texture in screen space, (additive)
6. Done
If that explanation isn't good enough feel free to join my discord and DM me and I can provide more detail + visuals if need be
Next are the Volumetrics Clouds lol
thats pretty cool
Dang it looks alot like RTX, i thought it was about RTX remix at first when looking at the thumbnail
Glua? Glue? GLUE?! NO.
Surely we get volumetric sun rays
Me: Wow that's really cool for making posters.
Also me: *Sees CSM working with this* I GOD DAMN NEED IT!

duping seems to work fine
I found a bug.

So about your working position in Facepunch, hows it going
Gwater 2 compatible with Radeon video cards?
Wow, this is amazing, and the fact that its real time and judging by the fps count not too expensive makes it look like magic, I wonder if there are any limitations?
besides the maximum number of subdivisions, none I could find
Soft Lamps in game render in real time
Joking aside, I'd really like to see this on the workshop.
I'd make a some what cooler crappy poster
he's gonna use csm and then casually put global illumination in the game soon watch
😮this is crazy
aw hell nah, someone figured it out before me
well done lol
its crazy that roblox is just about as old as gmod and uses the same programming language but cant even do this
Now sfm lighting, but better
*it is
