All actors in this film are Polish. As for comedies, there are dozens of cult ones, created in the times of socialism or after. But check out Polish cinema, not necessarily comedies, for example "Ashes and Diamonds" - 1958. If it was made in Soviet Russia, the actors and the director would go on long holidays to Siberia.

@@RobReacts1 That was the whole point from the start. He made up his name, making it as difficult as possible for the German officers. And the name of the place he was allegedly born in, does not exist either; again he made it up for the very same reasons. I recommend watching it in full.

Fun fact: name "Brzęczyszczykiewicz" isn't hard to spell when you are a Pole, but his made-up place of birth "Chrząszczyżewoszyce" is a real tongue twister even for polish person.

This film is a classic of Polish cinema. A piece of good cinema, a great comedy on the one hand, but also a touching film on the other, with great acting, with an unforgettable role of the unfortunately deceased Marian Kociniak. I doubt there is anyone over 20 or 30 in my country who wouldn't watch this film.

'How I started WWII' is one of my favourite Polish comedies. Along with 'Sexmission' and 'Vabank' - both films.

Gestapo officer cameo is played by Emil Karewicz who, between 1967-1968 played unforgettable role of... Gestapo officer, SS Sturmbannführer Hermann Brunner in TV series "The stake greater than life". Brunner through the whole serial was an antagonist of the main character, polish spy functioning as a german officer Hans Kloss, in the counter intelligence unit Abwehr.
Serial was played by the hugely talented theater actors, also the plot is great. You wan't regret this.

I live in Poland for ten years now . And when I started learning polish I needed like few months to learn to pronounce name of the street I was living at .And my native language is Serbian, there is lot of similarities between, good luck for the rest of the world 😅😂🤣
This is the reason why we do not have foreign spy'es in Poland, only traitors.
A lot of slavic native speakers have no problem with other western languages. Eastern are a bit difficult to us, because they are so similar and we have a tendency to pronounce them "easy way". I just wonder what asian people think of other languages (Chinese, Korean, Japanese etc.)

When you know or your native language is from slavic group, learning polish isn't difficult. All slavic languages are similar. But it's also very tricky, because you can find a lot of similar words, but with very different meaning.

A long time ago, when I watched this movie for the first time and this scene made me cry with laughter. Now, after many years, it still makes me laugh, it's already a cult comedy. Greetings from Poland.🙂
Funny is that historically speaking the scene also has lots of sense. Administration in Poland before WW2 was a mess. You had 17 vojvodeships with around 120 poviats (disctricts) so there was lots of searching on the map. Fun fact the place completely made up. But it took the Germans quite a while to notice it.
PS - I am glad you noticed how impeccable Emil Karewicz's German accent is. He was a great actor
There are also some jokes about British and Italians in the 2nd episode. The whole movie is very fun to watch

As a Pole who moved to the US when I was a child, this was how I felt every time I introduced myself at school. Thankfully my name isn’t as hard to spell or say but I still have to repeat my first name, Maciej, a few times until people get it right. Highly recommend that you watch this classic Polish comedy.

The film is based on a book "Przygody Kanoniera Dolasa" by Kazimierz Sławiński and the story is a collection of somewhat-true events that happened to multiple characters.
Also, the original movie was black &white, and it was only coloured about 20 years ago (alongside some other comedy classics)
His real name was Frank Dolas. He played with the Germans. He was a smart guy and a prankster. Everything for the homeland. 😆

Dla mnie od lat,dyżurne komedie to ,,Sami swoi" wszystkie trzy części, ,,Vabank" I i II , CK Dezerterzy I,II, no właśnie Jak rozpętałem..... i te które wymieniłeś.Niestety ,teraz raczej nowe komedie są żałosne i nie śmieszne. Szkoda.Na te czasy przydałoby się trochę pośmiać.😃😃
Sami Swoi się zdezaktualizowali. Jak rozpętałem... miś, Va bank (może jeszcze "Deja Vu", kilery), są wieczne.

Had little road collision few years ago( not my fault) and bit of resistance from other guy giving me his name. When he finally did , I asked him politely to spell it. He responded - learn bloody English!!!
Then he asked for my surname.
So I gave him my best smile fallowing with my name- Krzaczkowski.

One of the greatest Polish comedy movies ever made , this movie is sooo hilarious
In Polish, the combination "rz", and the letter "ż" (grammatical difference in spelling due to the peculiarity of the language) is pronounced like the French pronounce "J" (as in "Je t'aime" - I love you in French),
"sz", and "cz" are kind of like English "sh" and "ch", but harder (with the tip of the tongue rolled back towards the upper palate)
Finally, "ę" is like a ringing "e" (imagine hitting a guitar string that goes "twang").

The way the typewriter guy dies a bit on the inside when he hears where the guy lives XD It always gets me.
I recommend watching "Day of the Wacko" or "Dzień świra". It's a dark comedy, basically a day from life of a Squidward with OCD in early 2000s Poland. It's considered to be one of the best Polish movies ever made, and it's pretty short, only 90min.

"How I started World War II" is one of the best Polish comedies. The film consists of three parts. great fun and great humor. I highly recommend.
And one more thing I remember when Witold Waszczykowski became Minister of Foreign Affairs. We all had this scene from "How I Unleashed World War II" in front of our eyes.

In the second part of the film, an English soldier asks the general where the main character comes from, to which the general replies: "I don't know. Probably some Slav. They rustle so much". So this is how our language sounds for other nations ;)

Try also "Vabank", "Vabank II" and "Halo Szpicbródka" all 3 are classics when it comes to polish comedy. btw "Jak rozpętałem drugą wojnę światową" is made of 3 movies. An absolute must see😂
Kurwa, nie dawajcie mu za dużo z polskiej kultury bo mu się mózg zlatuje. Jak rozpętałem..., Miś i Va Banque wystarczy na razie.
Czy wiecie, że esesmana o zdartym głosie zgrał jeden z największych polskich aktorów pan Emil Karewicz, który do polskiego filmu przeszedł m.in. rolą Hermanna Brunnera, głównego przeciwnika Hansa Klossa w „Stawce większej niż życie” (1967-68). Zapadł w pamięć widzów, a zagrał tylko w pięciu odcinkach. Sam aktor w jednym z wywiadów mówił "Kilka razy dałem sygnały, że chciałbym i potrafiłbym grać komediowo, niestety nie powierzono mi tego typu roli. Inni realizatorzy tego nie docenili"...

as a Polish guy watching your recent vids I must admit: yes, this comedy is one of the best. You could also try : "C.K. Dezerterzy" - could be even better, as you learn more about Polish attitude in the middle of Prussian partition. Just a little clarification: "C.K. Dezerterzy" obviously takes place in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The C.K. stands for Imperial-royal (kaiserlich-königlich in German cesarsko-królewski in Polish), an adjective applied to all the governmental institutions in Austria-Hungary. It's one of my favorite movies ever. Fun fact: the whole Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz scene was inspired by a scene in the original "C.K Dezerterzy" novel by Kazimierz Sejda from 1937.

'How I unleashed World War II' is based on novel 'The Adventures of Dolas the Cannoneer', but that scene isn't in the novel. It's based on situation from another novel - 'H.M. Deserters'. One of the characters introduces himself as Sczepan Brzęczyszczewski, born in Mszczonowieścice, municipality Grzmiszczosławice, county Trzcinogrzechotnikowo
I recently rewatched it and its golden. Btw original version was in Dark and White with this black holes on screen from old movie tape. They digitalized it and brought it to color and HD. So much better.

The movie is based on novel "przygody kanoniera Dolasa" (The adventures of gunner Dolas), but concept with the name was borrowed from another book "C.K. dezerterzy" (C.K. deserters).
It's hundred times funnier if you actually Polish, like me, and could say this without trouble xD
This comedy is genius but unfortunately even you will find it with subtitles the send of humour is not always translatable. For example there is a scene when he walk under the bridge full of German patrol and he hold his hands on the bridge so one of the soldiers stand on his fingers so he shouted in pain “palce” which means fingers in Polish and Germans heard it and repeated “pance?” which is tank in German and the war has started and everyone was running like crazy shouting pance.
that why you dont watch films with dubbing but witch subtitles.... and you know what mean this word in your language and for both side what mean this "sound"/word what they hear:/ in american film (and many others) you see it many times and you have enought brain to get what it mean in your native language, and their languages when you have joke with "misunderstanding" words -.- he will not watch with dubbing "finger" >"tank" but pl-de dialogues palce>panzer... he is not deaf XD btw in PL TV you have sometimes subtitles for other languages in this filmXD

In my opinion "Seksmisja" is one of the best Polish SF comedy. And it is widely available with English subs.

The best polish comedy for me in 1990-2005: "Killer", "Czas surferów", "Haker", "To ja złodziej", "Chłopaki nie płaczą", "Vinci", "Wesele", "Dzień świra", "E=mc2". These are just some selected movies from my youth that I grew up with. There are even more iconic polish comedies from the 80s and earlier :)

Emil Karewicz... (the actor playing the SS officer's part). A great Polish actor. He lived very close to my Grandmum's house for a time.
BTW - I just watched his part in "Selekcja" TV-theater show. He played an American police commissioner . I bet his idea of spelling English names would hurt you... :)

I saw it so many times and still love it.
the SS officer in first part was also played by the same actor that played one of the most memorable german villains in all of polish tv history. Imagine having herr flick from allo allo appearing in a movie, as a gestapo officer, just as a small wink
Hands down, one of my favourite movies of all time. Some polish movies like this are just iconic in our country - sometimes because they're that good, sometimes because of such small scenes/quotes that you just can't simply forget. But honestly I think that's the older movies thing really.
Fun fact from a bit different movie - polish version of Shrek (and other movies translated by Bartosz Wierzbięta) does have some extra jokes (I mean something straight out of the original script) that only Poles could get it, understood and/or recognize.

There is such a person, Żelisław Żyżyński, a journalist and sports commentator. Colleagues from the Canal+ editorial office joke that this is the last person in the census in Poland. It is quite possible if you look at the Polish alphabet 😆
The actor playing the Gestapo officer is Emil Karewicz, one of the most outstanding Polish actors, born in Vilnius, died in 2020. He knew German very well.

Sporo mamy bardzo dobrych komedii. Wszystko co nakręcił Stanisław Bareja to klasyka Polskiej komedii. Zmiennicy, Alternatywy 4 to dwa seriale. Absolutna klasyka to Miś, Co mi zrobisz, jak mnie złapiesz, Brunet wieczorową porą, Poszukiwany, poszukiwana. Do tego inne Polskie genialne komedie jak Seksmisja, Kingsajz, Killer, Killer 2, Chłopaki nie płaczą, Dzień świra, Kariera Nikosia Dyzmy, Sztos, Poranek Kojota. Niestety od jakiś 15 lat jest bardzo słabo z polską komedią.
Kariera Nikodema Dyzmy z Romanem Wilhelmi - nie komedia, ale najlepszy serial odnosnie Nikodema Dyzmy.

fakt z komedia jest ostatnio drętwo ale polskie seriale kryminalne są calkiem dobre: "Szadź", "Kruk" w tym ostatnim 3eci sezon najlepszy a ostatni odcinek mega.
Mimo to nie wszystko tego reżysera mnie śmieszy np. "Miś". Ale "Jak rozpętałem drugą wojnę światową" jest super.

The theme of using a name that is difficult to pronounce is taken from the novel "CK Deserters".

Originally it's from a different book. The movie was based on "Przygody kanoniera Dolasa" by K. Sławiński while the episode with Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz comes from "CK dezerterzy" by K. Sejda. Which was the base for one of my favorite Polish comedies at the same title.

The mentioned movie is almost 4hrs long. Divided into 3 parts ( each roughly 1h 20 minutes ): 'Escape', 'To arms!', 'Among allies'.
It'a a comedy set up during WW2 and presents a lot of stereotypes about foreign nations that were popular in 60's- 70's in Poland
Nazwa „Niemiec” pochodzi od prasłowianskiego "niemc" ( czyli ktoś „niezdolny do mówienia”, „mamroczący”, „mówiący niezrozumiale” inaczej „niemy”) , co podkreśla barierę językową między językami germańskimi („cudzymi”) a słowiańskimi („naszymi”, „słownymi”) od prasłowianskiego "slověnin". Trzeba przyznać ,że polscy aktorzy grajacy niemieckich żołnierzy doskonale pokazali tę barierę językową.
I think "Rzeczpospolita babska" is a good film too. It tells the story of a female battalion trying to settle down after the war but next door there's a male one and they don't like each other.

Dear Rob, this scene have build up another joke that only Poles will get this. Actor that played 1st German (Emil Karewicz) is very well known (maybe mostly known) from TV Show where he plays main evil character, and the main hero there was "Hans" so it's a double joke. It's the most iconic comedy scene in our country :)

A day out of a life of a statistical underpaid Polish teacher. Most humour comes from relatable situations and the sometimes somewhat exaggerated reactions of the main character, whi being on already on edge gets pushed over it by small daily nuisances.
From the same director comes "Nothing Funny" (1995) a comedy again, about a man on the edge. This time the main protagonist is a movie director. While he shares the name with the main character from the Wacko, this is a different person. Allegedly the director uses the name "Adaś Miauczyński" as a monicer for a person who whines a lot (in Polish "miau" is what a cat does and it does has that whining quality to it, so for Koterski this is a name for a character who goes through life whining about everything). Kiler, Kiler II 1997, 1998 - also couldn't find versions with subtitles, if you find them, give them a watch. These became a source of a lot of sayings and a large part of popular culture. You might also check out the music albums by Elektryczne Gitary who made the music for the film, I really like them! : )
Vabank, Vabank II 1981, 1985 - Comedies set in 1930's Poland. In October 1934, a famous safe cracker in Warsaw criminal circles and also a jazz trumpeter, Henryk Kwinto, is released from a prison, where he has spent the past six years. After arriving home, he discovers that his wife has already found a substitute for him in the face of a police commissioner named Karelicki. Meanwhile his old partner, Kramer, who got him arrested became a well-known bank CEO. While Kwinto is ready to forgive him he learns that Kramer was also the reason for bankruptcy and death of Kwinto's best friend. He decides to organize one more heist...
Ciało - the Body, 2003; A set of surrealistic situations happening to a few characters joined by a single previous person. In a train, Goldi, a thief, is traveling with his loot. When the train stops suddenly, the luggage falls on the head of another passenger. Goldi discovers that the passenger is dead which now means that his loot killed someone... what he does not know, is that the passenger - Wolter - was already dead. Natural causes. His flatmates decided to get his body to the coast, to his family, train is cheaper than body transport. In order to make hm look presentable they stole a suit from some drunk guy on the bench they passed. That guy, however, was genuinely murdered. And then, to the surprise of the investigators, robbed of his clothes... Also, the guys that were moving Wolter's body to his family? They managed to miss the train after loading the body in, so now they have to chase it... Notable role of Rafał Królikowski, who, for the entire movie, plays a dead body.
C. K. Deserters (1986) - It's 1918. A group of soldiers belonging to various nationalities, after finding themselves arrested after unexpected inspection in their military unit decide to desert from austro-hungarian army. Movie is based on a book by the same title by Kazimierz Sejda. That in turn in terms of subject matter and the type of humour is similar to Jaroslaw Hašek's books.
There are a lot of comedies from the communist era as humour was a means of fighting against the system. Since the point of a joke can be not very obvious it is easier to disguise critique and to not have it censored. The master of this was a director by the name Stanisław Bareja.
It could be, however, that some of the jokes might not be easily understandable without the knowledge of the life under communist regime and all the administratorial-and-political idiotisms of that system. The fact that you could not just get a passport to leave the country, that possesion of foreign currency was illegal or that illegal trade of food was a thing (as there was a time when due to shortages the sales of meat was rationed) might not be obvious to today's viewer as opposed to the contemporary audience for whom these comedies were made. Thus they remain not just a movie but also an artifact recording the reality of hard times passed.
The Cruise (Piwowarski, 1970) - probably one of the best known comedies making fun of the reality of PRL Poland. There is a cruise ship going down Vistula River. A guy wants to get on, but he has no tickets, so he lies saying he's here "officially", claiming to be a cultural-education officer. Now while that positionusually was a sort of an animator, it was also often a cover for SB officers, who would spy on people and have them jailed if they spoke ill of the communist system. The news spreads like wildfire and the rest of the cruise is spent by all passangers trying to act as perfectly in line with the communist ideas of the perfect citisen as humanely possible, which obviously turns the cruise into a sort of a surrealistic situation, with all members of the party tying to make the liar happy, believing him to be an undercover secret policeman.
Miś (Bareja, 1981) - A small time sports club CEO falls out with his wife. She cuts up his passport and leaves. This starts a race between them - they had a safebox in a bank in London, where they kept a hefty sum of money in dollars. First to get there gets it all! The parts that may not be clear to a modern viewer is the hurdles one had to jump through to get a passport.
I hate Mondays (Chmielowski, 1971) - The action of the film takes place on an unlucky Monday in Warsaw and focuses on episodes from the lives of a dozen or so characters. Italian industrialist Francesco Rovanelli (Kazimierz Witkiewicz), who comes to Warsaw with the intention of signing a lucrative contract, unexpectedly gets lost in a foreign city. A militia officer (Andrzej Herder) in charge of the movement has to take care of his little son, who, like other children, has not been admitted to the kindergarten because of the rubella plague that prevails there, and his wife (Joanna Kasperska), who works in a matrimonial office, cannot leave her job. The delegate of the commune cooperative (Jerzy Turek) is looking for a spare part for a combine harvester and argues with the impetuous taxi driver (Adam Mularczyk), and the drunk actor Bohdan Łazuka (appearing as himself) tries to get home, walking through the awakening Warsaw led by tram tracks, in which he stuck the crank to the car.
Kingsajz (Machulski, 1987) - a fantasy-comedy, which is set in a fictional liliputian realm of Drawerland, which is an allegory of a communist country. Olo Jedlina is a gnome, and while serving the government of Drawerland he is permitted to visit Kingsajz, the realm of humans. However, after getting few drops of a potion that change him to achieve human proportions he decides to stay in Kingsajz for good and he avoids shrinking by regularly drinking a soda drink called Polo-Cockta. He becomes a journalist for a popular magazine and the boyfriend of an attractive model and lives a peaceful life, although in Drawerland he is considered to be a traitor. His close friend Adaś Happs, a scientist that once helped to produce the Kingsajz potion, rebelled and escaped too. While hiding in Kingsajz he works in his secret laboratory to discover the potion formula, hoping to be able to manufacture it one day and give it to all the gnomes in Drawerland. The movie starts when Adaś finally discovers the secret and has to immediately escape from his lab which is being demolished by human sized gnome agents that tracked him down.
