Such a good video, thank you. About ten years ago my car was towed and I had a courtesy car from my insurance that was a very big expensive car. The way people treated me on the roads was so different to when I drove my own small old cheap car! Every day people were much more courteous to me and deferential at junctions etc. So weird to observe! Like you, I’m happy to keep my financial business private. I don’t need to impress anyone and hope instead to leave a good legacy for my children. ❤
I'm so happy to see you back. Girlfriend I'm so frugal I go into a state of confusion. My 401k is so fat you would think I won the lotto. I have to open an account at another bank because I've reached the FDIC limit and here, I am quibbling about the price of a cracked windshield. I got out of that fad crap many years ago. As long as I can listen to my cd's and the car drives well, I don't care.
I've learned SO many people are in crazy debt to go on fancy trips, buy huge homes, nice cars, etc. They are secretly financially miserable. Most of the time, it's all just so they can post their "lifestyle" on social media! The best thing I did was quit all social media and stop comparing myself and my financial situation to anyone else. It's a wonderful feeling to be debt free, live below our means, and save up for truly special trips and experiences. 💕
I am surrounded by people with more money than me but fortunately they aren’t braggarts. Some of them are frugal, some not. I used to compare myself to them but have learned not to now. We are all just making choices based on what’s important to us. My priorities might be different to other people’s, just like my capacity to earn more money is different to some of my friends. I like that we can all find things to do that fit in everyone’s budget. So glad you are back Dana
This is so true! Another example is years ago when I shopped at mall cosmetic counters (I don’t any longer) if I dressed up I was fawned over, if I just showed up in sweats, they didn’t even see me! Great video! Xo
Comparing yourself to yourself in any area of life if good advice because we just never know what is going on with other people, thank you for the video.
I imagine this was a challenging video because some will inevitably take some thoughts the wrong way. I think you did an excellent job. And you are so true: we should not be comparing ourselves or our lives to anyone else's.Frugality is not asceticism, it's making the best use of your funds. And rewards for a job well done is a must... it's called selfcare. Love your channel, so helpful. ❤
Also, people have different priorities. For me, building my retirement fund and hopefully retiring early is a priority. For others, being able to travel while they're young and healthy may be a priority. Some people prioritize big families and lots of kids, others prioritize freedom and experiences. I could make a case for my choice, but I can't really say that one way is right and the other way is wrong, as long as people live within their means. The grass may always be greener on the other side, but as long as you're clear about why you made the choices you did, you can hopefully keep the envy in check.
I love to travel and it's a priority for me. I am fortunate that I make enough money that I can travel internationally most years. I also love to talk about my recent trips because it keeps the experience alive for me. I don't buy a lot of new clothes and my car is 11 years old (bought used in cash). I also contribute to my 401k and max out my HSA every year. It's all about priorities.
I love your videos, Dana! I totally feel this way. It’s all about societal perceptions, right. I drive a 2010 minivan currently. Told myself I would NEVER get caught in a minivan lol. Well, I finally broke down because there’s 5 of us and I really wanted the space but something affordable because I’m dealing with debt. But people do treat you differently on the road. They pass you like you’re driving all slow and I’m driving with the flow of traffic. You can just feel a different energy on the road. But I’m not too worried about it anymore. I love, love, love the space and like you, I do not need to impress anyone
Hi Dana, I have a paid off car that works well but is not flashy. The way you describe being treated based upon your looks and the car you drive just makes me think it is worth keeping up appearances to gain advantage in the world 🤔
I recently bought a newer to me car. My old car was 22 years old! A friend asked me if I was procrastinating buying a newer car. I said, no I am saving up to buy a new car with cash. I am a great procrastinator with a lot of things, but this one was careful planning.
Hi, Dana! I love the idea of having a secret when it comes to net worth (especially when I occasionally feel judged for not being flashy). Privately making ourselves proud is such a great motivator.
I found some local cream that is super good that I use in my Folgers or work coffee. You can’t pay me to go Starbucks to get their coffee with fake cream or mass produced cream after having my local cream. I do have money now because I have never kept up with the Jones (except I do like to compare my net worth with others.)
We took a trip of a lifetime to Disney World. It was so stressful even though we had the money and planned ahead. We really didn't though, because a few months later our daughter had surgery and maxed out our max on our health insurance and had to see a specialist on top of that who wasn't covered at all. We also live in a nice house with college furniture and beanbag chairs. I did finally replace my 15-year-old car because it's second engine and transmission were dying and my mechanic husband declared it not safe. It's all about perspective. I actually love not having (much) debt and a big net worth. Having a plan and a budget gives me peace.
I feel like the saying "keeping up with the Jones" means going into debt to look good like rich people that live next door. TRICKING the Jones', however, is a fun game to me. I have a very nice Starbucks to go cup that I bought for under a buck at Goodwill, that I use when out and about and bring my own special or even plain coffee. If find it easier to explain than explaining why I have homemade coffee in a used styrofoam cup. Its easier to just "fit in" than to explain that Im saving money by carrying my own coffee. When my kids were little, and had peer pressure from their friends, I spent lots of time changing out generic cereal bags into name brand boxes, tearing off labels of generic ketchup, and sewing on designer labels onto cheap jeans. We give into the shoes - one pair per year. lol IDK, I find it fun to live the same as everyone else but more frugally. Because of these things, we are able to tell everybody (who asks us to tell them lol) about our yearly, two week Mexican vacations and our week long July summer lake vacations. We are debt free and very low income. But nobody would ever know it and we prefer it that way, despite the new trend of "looking poor" is good. lol We drive a 2004 Jeep Liberty and our "new" car is a 2010 Subaru we inherited from my hubbys parents about 4 years ago. We just try to keep them in good running order and clean inside and out. IDK what people think about that. If asked, I just say cars are not our priority, although we try to keep them running well so they are reliable and thats it. People DO understand that.
Hi Dana! OMG I feel the exact same way!! I’m also the only one in my street without a $80k SUV, who doesn’t care to travel all over the world with my husband and 4 young kids (the horror haha), who doesn’t care to go to expensive restaurants or wear pretentious designer clothing. Women who wear a LV bag feels like it becomes a part of their personality 😂
I agree with everything but the restaurants. I like to spend what we call "F U" money on a really nice restaurant close to my house. If I find myself with an extra $50-$150 after everything is paid, savings are bulked up, etc - I'll go there either by myself or with my husband or a friend, have a couple drinks & a really nice meal. I know it's not for everyone but I'll spend a pretty penny on a really good meal. ❤
@reviewsbygen5591 lol fair point! Looking to have a baby soon, I'll probably not see the inside of a restaurant for a few years. Hoping it's a well behaved trick baby!
I'm very lucky I have no debt. I keep my wants to an absolute minimum and my needs as low as possible also. I do have relatives who travel a lot and I know for a fact that they do have money. They are the quiet rich. I am the quiet poor....lol. 😊
Oh how I relate to the Starbucks cup feeling. I sometimes set up really nice coffee cup (found from the curb),and just have the sense of luxurious life. I also have Starbucks tumbler, which I fill at home, yet I feel like I am having Starbucks coffee 😊 We also have a 2004 car. That one will be driven and fixed until it dies 😂
When bottles of Starbucks iced Frappuccino came out, I bought a pack of them. Searched online for recipes I could make by the pitcher full myself cheaply. Washed the Starbucks bottles out and would pour from the pitcher for my high schoolers and for me. We used the bottles a million times and the children had every flavor you could imagine. Good lesson for them. I drive a hail damaged 2009 little Toyota Matrix and yes, differential treatment is real. But it’s paid for and my only debt is the last few years of a low interest 15-year home marriage. Glad you are back!
Other people should not be of our concerns. They prioritize differently their spendings. Having multiple vacations for one family is where they put a lot of thought and effort. For some other is having big savings, paying off home, helping family members to get by… We are all Johnses to someone and someone is looking up to us. My family was invited for a trip for New Year to Egypt. We thanked our friends who considered us, but declined as this was not planned in our yearly budget. We have no issues telling people that something is not in our budget. We traveled this year, had few vacations, and bought a home where we moved 2 months ago. Not everything is our priority.
Paper cup feels luxurious? Hmm, it really does reinforce why it’s so common that people will overspend for a “brand” or logo instead of buying something with the same or better functionality and quality at a lower price. For example, I don’t buy shirts with upitty logos because the more expensive the shirt the more likely I’ll need to sew buttons back on.
I do get my hair and nails done because where I live, I absolutely notice a difference in how I'm treated. But I also drive a 2008 Tahoe that's getting pretty worse for wear. It just got some major work done & I'm hoping it'll last another year or 2 before the exhaust manifold in the engine needs to be replaced! That being said, I love being able to pay for things in cash (or all at once with a debit card) & have to remind myself that I've put that "nice car" money into my retirement instead of a nicer car so that I don't have to work until my death bed like many of my coworkers who spend all their money on flashy items. When I got promoted at my last job, I did celebrate by buying myself a Kate Spade tote. It's been 4 years, and it is living up to the hype! I told my husband that if it doesn't last 10 years or more, I'll go back to Walmart & TJMaxx purses. Only 6 more years to go!
A few years ago I was in a knitting group. All the other women were talking about their recent trips around the world. I laughingly said I went to Ohio - we live in Indiana. Awkward silence after my comment. I learned just to smile and say nothing :-). PS I DO buy expensive yarn though!
I was a poor single mom with a nice car and professional job in my early 20s...i dressed nice. Went to see an apartment and the landlord told me he thought i could do much better than his apt.
I truly believe us frugal people need to do some things we feel that are “indulgent”. Grab a coffee out or put our homemade coffee in a Starbucks cup. If it’s what suits you, it’s fine. Just don’t go into debt being indulgent because it makes you “feel good” in that moment.
When I see people with new stuff I say to myself that’s a lot of debt. A bank will give you as much money that you can make payments on. I like to have no car payments, own second hand furniture, save money for trip before I go but don’t owe the bank anything. I personally don’t miss the stress of making sure there was enough money in my account
I was in a church group years ago. Most of the other women were career women and I was a stay at home mother. One of the other women complained that her housekeeper took a bag of donations to Goodwill with the pillows to her Queen Ann chair in it. She put this woman down even though she admitted that she was the one who put them in the bag and forgot to take them back out... I sat there quietly and someone asked me what I was thinking. All I could say is " I just realized I am the housekeeper". (Crickets)......
When the cable TV guy would call and explain all the wonderful options for his viewing pleasure, my dad would say "no, because I've got something better" and the guy on the phone would say "better? what could that be?" and my dad would say "I've got the MONEY!".
I just read something today: "Comparison is the thief of joy"! Dana, I appreciate you so much! Being 69 & retired recently, I try not to look at coworkers who are taking safaris & trips to Europe. There is so much to see locally that I never had a chance to when working all those years. ❤
Many times those expensive trips aren’t fun anyway. Stressful or someone gets sick or arguments break out over directions. It’s not for me. Maybe one day but I don’t know.
A European here who can reliably inform you that Europeans dream of vacations in the US, Australia and New Zealand to mention a few 😉. It's a great strategy to look what's close to you and enjoy it to the fullest. Best way to avoid jetlag too.
The only person you should ever compare yourself to is YOU. Where were you yesterday/last week/last month/ last year, compared to where you are today. Every other comparison is an exercise in futility. Do they have nicer things? Are they drowning in debt because of it? Did they get an inheritance or were those things gifted? Run your own race. And the only person you should ever try to better than is your old self.
I agree cars are a waste of money!! I’m like you. I drive a 12 year old Jetta and when I drive my husbands luxury vehicle I notice people look at me. Lmao. No one looks at me getting out of the Jetta 😂 but I do notice a lot of people aren’t upgrading cars like before because the interest rates are crazy.
I don’t have any furniture in my new built house either, but that is because I can’t make up my mind. Part of the problem is trying to figure out what I like and what will hold up to the cats.
I hear you on the cats! I put these clear plastic covers on the ends of my sofa - worked OK the first year but it peeled off and now my cat has taken a shine to it. 😩
I dint like Starbucks coffee its too atrong for me. There are other coffee places or resturabts that have coffee I like. My fav food at IHOP is their coffee.
My advice to everyone is this : if you want to grow big this year especially in your finances. Be willing to make investments. Saving is great but investing puts you on a pedestal where you wouldnt have to worry about savings as you do now. Thanks to larysa Caba, my portolio is doing really great and im proud of the decisions i made last year.
I feel one Of the greatest challenges that we first timers face in the ma rket is that we end up losing all we have, making it difficult to find ourselves back to our feet. My biggest advice is to always seek the services of a professional just like I did when I ventured into it for the first time. Big thanks to Larysa Caba. I now make huge profits by weekly through her services while still learning to stand on my own.
I know her. she trades for everyone I have come across. I met her twice at a meeting in Germany and after her lectures from Ella I had to personally ask her to be my financial advisor. she is definitely good.
I have never seen a trader as open and transparent as Larysa Caba with her clients. The way she decides to make a profit for her clients. she allows you to express your fears and she still rests your fears and that is my respect. I don't normally comment on videos, but this word should be included. she is really cool.
In 2007 I bought a brand new Honda Fit with cash. In 2020 I bought a 2017 Honda HRV with cash. I gave that 13 year old car to my grandson, who is 26 and still driving it. He and his partner make good money, but I was able to convince him that a brand new car driven off the lot is a used car. He is saving money to pay cash for a newer used car. I couldn't be more proud!
I'm 47yrs old $18,000 weekly and I'm retired, this video have inspired me greatly in many ways that I remember my past of how I struggled with many things in life to be where I'm today!!❤
Investment is currently the most lucrative business in the world. Both real estate, stock, and crypto currencies are positively changing people's lives.
Love it!!! 💪
I agree with you on that paper cup feeling. I totally got what you meant about tricking yourself into feeling like it's fancy. ❤
Yes, I exactly. It just feels like a treat. 😊
I really wanted to hear this today …Thankyou !!!

Thanks for sharing this. So true! We all have individual priorities. ❤️
I’m glad you’re back, Dana! I love your content and what you share with others!
Thank you so much! HUGS! ❤️💕
I imagine this was a challenging video because some will inevitably take some thoughts the wrong way. I think you did an excellent job. Very well said!!
I’m so happy you’re back! I miss your advise and your voice!😊
Thank you so much!! ❤️💕 I’m happy to be back. Missed everyone here!
Great video😊 I’m driving a 2012 Honda CRV & hubby drives 2015 CRV we ❤ them they are both paid for.
Love it!!

The biggest thing you can do for yourself is not care about what other people think. That will make you free.
Hi, Dana! I love the idea of having a secret when it comes to net worth (especially when I occasionally feel judged for not being flashy). Privately making ourselves proud is such a great motivator.
Yes! It helps in so many situations. 😊
We also have 2004 mini van and I love having a paid off vehicle. Vehicle poor is the worst feeling.

I will keep driving my 2013 Corolla debt free!!!
I have a Toyota too! 😁💕
2015 Corolla driver here! Paid cash and will drive it til it dies!

Yes! Same here. I’ll keep fixing them because so far it’s ALWAYS been cheaper to do the repair vs buying a new car. Works for me! 😊
I put protein coffee in a reusable Starbucks cup with fancy ice. It helps me feel like I'm doing something indulgent while I'm trying to be healthy.
When bottles of Starbucks iced Frappuccino came out, I bought a pack of them. Searched online for recipes I could make by the pitcher full myself cheaply. Just kidding.
HAHA!!! The bumper, no doubt. 😂
When the cable TV guy would call and explain all the wonderful options for his viewing pleasure, my dad would say "no, because I've got something better" and the guy on the phone would say "better? what could that be?" and my dad would say "I've got the MONEY!".
I love this! ❤️
😂 SO GREAT!!
Quiet wealth is so much better. Broke is loud. Whisper, whisper!
I do share bad trips and how i wasted money 😂
Realize that all you're seeing is that they're SPENDING more, not that they have more money.
Most people live well beyond their means. They own nothing, it’s all put on credit cards.
Making over 48k monthly is all because of her.
I just looked up her name online. she is licensed with credible certificates and has an amazing track record. Thank you for the message.
Are you reusing paper cups?
I’m actually not currently buying any paper cups. 😊
Getting a good used car is going to last longer than bad new car.
you said you did the coffee cup for you. not to show off. not sure why anyone thought that
Yeah, I don’t know. It’s ok. Didn’t hurt to clarify. 😊
McDonald's coffee way better than Starbucks 😅
If you still fall into the Starbucks trap, you still have some work to do.
Yes! Always more work to do. 😊💕
I'm 47yrs old $18,000 weekly and I'm retired, this video have inspired me greatly in many ways that I remember my past of how I struggled with many things in life to be where I'm today!!❤
