    The advice about black first, followed by contrast red is very good. My first big batches of Blood Angels were primed then based in red all over. The second batch I simply put red in the areas that it was supposed to go and it was easier and better looking. I recently tired BA red from citadel mixed with Monument Pyrrole Red and that works great over a white zenithal spray.

      Yep! I actually recorded a video of it but haven't gotten around to editing it yet. Here are my notes:
      Prime Black
      Heavy Drybrush Ironbreaker
      Light Drybrush Necron Compound or any bright silver
      For lighter more blue steel (apply one or two layers of Space Wolves Grey depending on how saturated you want the blue.
      For darker blue/purple gun metal apply a mix of Space Wolves Grey + trace amounts of Shyish Purple (4 drops and then just a "tip of the brush amount of purple). Add a little purple at a time until you get a faded dark denim color.
      Apply either mixture over your silver surface.
      Edge highlight with Grey Knights Steel

      Not that I've noticed and I've been using them for years now. You can always apply airbrush cleaner on a q-tip to the area if you're concerned about it. But as far as I've seen, everything glues just fine after I remove them.

    Very nice recipe! Big fan of “paint the details first then do the armor carefully”
    For the recess shade, do you reckon gloss varnish would yield a similar effect to the lahmian medium? As in, improving shyish purple’s flow

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  25 днів тому

      Thank you! It's funny you mention that because I aaaaalmost tried that. My only concern was it would make it flow a bit too much on such a small surface or I'd have to hit the armor with a matte varnish at the end, and brush it on after already painting the metallics.....but dammit now I wanna give it a try 😄

    I’m about 2 months in to my mini painting journey. I really like Baal Red, Black Templar, and other contrast paints but have grown to hate the finish. For some reason they come out looking… flatter? than when I use “standard” paints. Do you think a varnish after the fact would help with that? Keep the speed but fix the finish?

  • @chrisfowler9987
    @chrisfowler9987 26 днів тому

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  26 днів тому

      Thank you! I used an Artist Arsenal 00 by Game Envy for the recesses and a size 0 (I think) for the highlights. They're sable but still stiff enough to edge highlight well.gameenvy.net/product/artists-arsenal-sable-brush-size-00/

    Thanks for this - any advice for Blood Angels gold armour?

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  26 днів тому +1

      Yep, but it depends on how saturated you want it. If you want the traditional pale gold, then try a bright silver like Runefang Steel followed by Skeleton Horde Contrast over top. You can hit it with a shade coat of Agrax Earthshade if you want it to be a bit more saturated. Then highlight very sparingly with Liberator Gold. Alternatively if you'd like a good one and done gold, that's a little bit more saturated than pale gold, just apply a thin coat of Army Painter Hardened Leather over Runefang Steel.

  • @jorgemontero6384
    @jorgemontero6384 25 днів тому

    Why not just Druchii violet, which is probably already thinned just right anyway? I think it's secretly one of GWs best paints, asn it can base coat light purples over white, and often a better shadow color than nuln oil and agrax.

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  25 днів тому

      I don't think it's saturated or dark enough. The new shades also dry very glossy even when thoroughly shaken, which is definitely not something you want in your recesses. It works fine for subtle recesses (if you're using a matte varnish later) but for deeper stuff I prefer Shyish.

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  5 днів тому +1

      The black trim is the style for painting "classic" Blood Angels from early editions. For the more current editions it is red trim unless it is a veteran unit.

  • @saeyabor
    @saeyabor 4 дні тому

    I search "Blood Angels contrast," 1st result is a Darcy guide I missed on FB last month. Sometimes the algorithm passes its 5+.
    Do you know if this problem is solved similarly by Zandri Dust or other yellow-ish canned primer, or Averland Sunset/Jokaero Orange undercoat?
    I might hear a long-unpainted _Assault on Black Reach_ tac squad volunteering to test this. For Sanguinius.

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  3 дні тому +1

      Haha no worries!
      I tried it with a yellow undercoat of Yriel Yellow and it kinda helps, but isn't quite a bright (saturated as hell but not as vibrant) so the answer is "sorta" if you want to do a yellow undercoat and layer of Baal Red.
      But for Zandri Dust it's a no. It's just too desaturated of a color with not enough yellow to change the red to orange. I haven't tried Jokaero Orange as an undercoat, but since it's a duller orange I think it would have the same problem as Zandri Dust.

    • @saeyabor
      @saeyabor 2 дні тому

      @@DarcyBonoCreations I have some Sisters of the Bloody Rose airbrushed Mephiston Red; normal brushed 2nd coat, Evil Sunz Scarlet edge-highlight, red wash. What makes me love the way it came out on them is what makes me iffy about transferring it to Blood Angels: relatively dark and somber (as pure reds go), but maybe BA should use a hint of orange to look fiery and/or golden-lit because they just lean so hard into "perceived as actual angels."
      Could fix that with Evil Sunz highlighted Jokaero, but I also like the idea of partly switching to or adopting Contrast, so... research lol.

  • @elicru3640

    I recently started my blood angel army and was suggested to use a light grey primer (similar to grey seer/celestra grey) If I was to use your method what results would I expect instead of using a white primer? Also would badmoon yellow or iyanden yellow be a good substitute for imperial fist yellow?

    • @DarcyBonoCreations
      @DarcyBonoCreations  24 дні тому

      I recommend downloading the Citadel Colour app. It's free, ad-free and has a library of recipes that demonstrate how the primer color effects the subsequent layer of Contrast. For light Grey, it's going to turn the red slightly more muted (closer to a brick red). Badmoon Yellow would work similarly though it won't be quite as fiery since it's not an orange yellow like IF Yellow. I don't recommend Iyanden Yellow for this because it's not very saturated and is much thinner so it's not going to provide the same smooth coverage.
