    ‭Ephesians 2:8-9
"For you are saved by grace through faith, and this is not from yourselves; it is God’s gift - not from works, so that no one can boast."
    ‭James 2:24
"You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."
I feel like people misunderstand the meaning behind these two passages. Our salvation is only dependent on grace through our faith, and our faith is justified on our works. To have only faith without works is to have a dead faith. But to only do works and have no faith is to be without salvation.
Works do not save us, faith does. That's why a man on his death bed can profess his faith with his dying breath and be saved.
But faith without works is dead. By having faith, God calls us to do His works. Therefore living a life without answering that call puts our faith into question.
Grace through faith saves us, and our works justify our faith.

    • @henryF6
      @henryF6 10 днів тому +2

I like this, but if a man can confess and accept Christ on his deathbed and still be saved then what does it matter if we do works or not? How can our faith be called into question if a man can be saved on his deathbed through faith alone?

    • @Mournforthelost96

@@henryF6 how is faith not enough? John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." God does not save us by our works because He already did the work to save us. Our part is to believe in that work, that sacrifice that Jesus made.
To believe that works can save you is to be stuck in an old covenant mindset. We are not the ancient Isrealites who had to work and sacrifice and cleanse themselves daily, monthly, and yearly to attone for their sins. A covenant that was never meant to, nor could ever bring true salvation. We are the Kingdom of God living in the New Covenant that Jesus bled and died for, once and for all so that we wouldn't have to try and fail continuously to redeem ourselves from sin. We don't perform good works to save ourselves, we do good works because the Holy Spirit within us compells us to. As a Christian, works are a result of faith, not the source of it.

Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest?
Most Protestants, if not all, believe you should confess your sins straight to God; forget all this nonsense of going through a priest. Well, what does the Bible say?
Let’s start in the Old Testament, remembering 2 Tim 3:16 that “all Scripture is profitable for teaching and training in righteousness.” Look at Leviticus, chapter 5, verses 5 and 6: “When a man is guilty in any of these [sins listed in the previous verses], he shall confess the sin he has committed, and he shall bring his guilt offering to the Lord for the sin which he has committed...and the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin.”
So, what does this passage from Leviticus teach us? How does it train us in righteousness? First, we see that to be forgiven we have to confess our sins. No problem there. Second, it looks as if there is penance to be performed after our sins are confessed...a “guilt offering” was brought to the Lord. Third, a person could not go straight to God to have his sins forgiven. God set things up so that people had to go to a priest. Why did God do that?
But, what if someone says, “Well, that’s the Old Testament, we’re not bound by that anymore.” No, we’re not bound by that anymore, but listen to Hebrews 10:1, “For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities...” The law, the Old Testament practices, were a “shadow” of the “true form” of the good things to come. So, the Old Testament practices should give us a hint or a clue as to the equivalent New Testament practices, since they are a “shadow” of the things to come. What is a shadow? It's an outline of the real thing. In other words, in the Old Covenant, God was, in effect, training us... giving us clues...for what was to come under the New Covenant.
So, again, we see confession of sin, penance, and the involvement of the priest in the Old Testament. 1 John 1:9, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Catholic and Protestant agree. But, does it say that we are to confess our sins to God alone, and not to man? No, it doesn’t. In fact, in James 5:16 it commands us to confess our sins to “one another”. Scripture commands us...God’s Word commands us...to confess our sins to our fellow man. James 5:16, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another...”. Again, this is a command, from Scripture, to confess our sins to one another, not just to God...not just to God.
But, do we go around confessing our sins to just anyone? I don’t think so. Should I confess my sins to all of you here in this newsletter? Maybe to a stranger at the mall? To my wife, or to my brothers and sisters? No! Doesn’t it make sense that God would have us confess our sins to those who actually have the power to forgive our sins?
Whoa! Wait a minute, John! Are you suggesting that men can forgive sins? Yes I am. This...this is the major stumbling block for non-Catholic Christians regarding Catholic teaching on the Sacrament of Confession - men forgiving sins. When you get into this discussion, you will be told that only God can forgive sins. Which is exactly what Catholics believe; however, we believe that God can and does exercise this power through men. Understand that, please! It is God’s power, but He exercises that power through men.
Now, here’s what you do when someone says that only God can forgive sins and therefore Catholics are going against Scripture when they confess their sins to a priest. Turn to Mark 2, verse 7 - this is the story of Jesus healing a paralytic. Mark 2:7 says, “Why does this man speak thus? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Ask whoever you’re talking to if they agree with Scripture regarding that statement that only God can forgive sins. They will undoubtedly say, "Yes." The problem is, that that statement came out of the mouths of the scribes, and in this context it betrays a limited understanding of God’s power, as Jesus goes on to point out to them. So, what you have done is put them on the side of the scribes, and, generally speaking, being on the side of the scribes is not a good thing.
Now, turn back a few pages to Matthew chapter 9. This is the exact same story of the healing of the paralytic that we were just looking at in Mark chapter 2. Again, in verse 3 it says the scribes said, “This man is blaspheming.” And what happens? Jesus shows them that their understanding of God’s power is a limited one. In verse 6 Jesus tells them, “But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins...” And what does Scripture tell us in verse 8? “When the crowds saw it, they were afraid, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to [a man]”. To a man? No! To “men”. Plural! Scripture tells us that God gave this authority to “men”, not just to “a man”, Jesus Christ. But to men! And what authority did God give to men? The authority on earth to forgive sins! I don’t know how much plainer it can be. Scripture tells us that God gave “men” the authority on earth to forgive sins.
And, should you have any doubts, turn to the Gospel of John. John 20:21-23 - “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me...[remember that phrase: “As the Father has sent me”]... As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.’ And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’” Verse 21: “As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” How did the Father send Jesus? We just saw in Matthew 9:6 that “the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”. So, the Father sent Jesus with the authority on earth to forgive sins. Now, Jesus is sending out the Apostles as the Father sent Him. So, what authority must the Apostles have? That’s right, the authority on earth to forgive sins. And, just in case someone didn’t understand Him in verse 21, in verse 23 He can’t get much clearer: “If you forgive the sins of any they are forgiven, if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
Why give the Apostles the power to forgive or retain sins unless you expect people to confess their sins to them? How can you forgive or retain someone’s sins unless you know what their sins are? Unless they are confessing their sins to you? And, as we saw earlier in James 5:16, we are supposed to confess our sins to men, not to God alone. And in James, it right before it says to confess your sins to one another, it says to call for the elders - the bishops and priests. That is who we are to confess our sins to!
Yes, we confess our sins to God, but the system which God has set up for us to receive His forgiveness, involves confessing our sins to men. The Bible is very clear on this. And, as we learned from the Old Testament, the priest is an integral part of how God set up the system for receiving forgiveness of sin. Remember that, this is how God set things up, not man. The Sacraments are all instituted by Jesus Christ Himself, and we have clearly seen that here in Scripture regarding the Sacrament of Confession.

Fortunately, my parents did not have any anti-Catholic sentiment. I have noticed, however, three aspects of Catholicism that seem to trouble some who are not Catholic. I once had someone refuse to attend church with me because “Catholic worship statues.” Some people think that Catholics revere Mary more than they do Christ. And there remains a BIG misunderstanding of what papal infallibility means. I would also like to make a correction to what was said here about Transubstantiation. It is not the Church, nor the priest who turns the elements into the body and blood of Christ. It is the power and grace of God that transforms the elements. The priest makes the pronouncement of the words as written in the Scriptures. But the “miracle” is wrought by God Himself. Put your FAITH and TRUST in the LORD JESUS CHRIST as he is the one who has the key to LIFE and DEATH.

Please do not base your soteriology on the thief on the cross. That was an extreme case, and many times the Bible says Baptism saves. 1 John 3:5 - "Verily, verily I say to you: unless a man be born of water and the spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of heaven."
1 Peter 3:21 - "The like figure whereunto even BAPTISM NOW SAVES US, (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. "

No, catholics believe it is the body and blood of Christ. Your catechism says so.
The signs of bread and wine
1333 At the heart of the Eucharistic celebration are the bread and wine that, by the words of Christ and the invocation of the Holy Spirit, become Christ's Body and Blood. Faithful to the Lord's command the Church continues to do, in his memory and until his glorious return, what he did on the eve of his Passion: "He took bread. . . ." "He took the cup filled with wine. . . ." The signs of bread and wine become, in a way surpassing understanding, the Body and Blood of Christ; they continue also to signify the goodness of creation. Thus in the Offertory we give thanks to the Creator for bread and wine,154 fruit of the "work of human hands," but above all as "fruit of the earth" and "of the vine" - gifts of the Creator. The Church sees in the gesture of the king-priest Melchizedek, who "brought out bread and wine," a prefiguring of her own offering.155

It overemphasizes OUR works, it gives humans authority to do what only God can. I do believe God performs miracles through us, tells us to follow and lead by His example, speaks and is alive in us. But we as humans do not have the authority to forgive sins. We also have the Holy Spirit(God Himself) alive in us, so we don’t need any saints to intercede for us since we have mainline access to God

I do think this is a common issue when it comes to the concept of salvation by faith. I can't speak on the RCC because I'm Orthodox, but I do know a similar argument is often pointed at us.
I think the main issue is in the definition of what "Faith" is.
There seems to be a view of faith being some combination of a mental and physical act of saying "I accept Christ as my Lord and Savior" and ending it there. Where as in the Orthodoxy at least, the idea of "Faith" is not just our thoughts or things we say, but our faith is our whole lives.
If we say we have "Faith" in Christ as our savior, that means that our actions should reflect that. If they don't, one must ask if you DO in fact have faith or if you have merely made a statement and nothing else.

Catholic theology grad student here (if that counts for anything): most of this is fairly good, especially the part about the saints.
But two reservations: you'd be VERY hard pressed to find a Catholic theologian who would say that "salvation is about participating in the Church." It's more approriate to say that salvation is about being transformed by God, plain and simple. This transformation is by our cooperation with His grace, which includes the Sacraments and living within the community established by Christ.
Second, we don't really talk about Transubstantiation being a miracle under the *authority* of the Church. It is a miracle wrought by God; the priest is deputized, as having a share in the apostolic ministry by his ordination (laying of hands), to make it present.
Some might say these are distinctions without differences, but since people sometimes think that Catholics *worship* the Pope or that priests *make* Christ come down to Communion, I think it makes a huge difference. Any Catholic who knows their faith sees Holy Communion and Confession not as a "special power" of priests and bishops, but of God, who has *chosen* to send out and act through ministers receiving their ministry from the Apostles.

I grew up a devout Catholic and have been saved by grace and now am a follower of the Biblical Christ and accept Him as my Lord and Savior. As a Catholic, I reasoned with the Church, but now that I have truly read the WORD, I have realized the true difference between my former and current beliefs is the authority. I used to believe that the Church was the authority over scripture, now I know that it is the opposite. The word should be the authority over the Church, putting God and His word at the top rather than seeing the priesthood as conduits of Gods power. We are all now priests, and Jesus is the ultimate authority over man and the only true way to the father. We are all called to be priests under Jesus, and it is all of us who hold the authority through faith to heal, to bless, to exercise, to deliver people abd to cast out demons, and to forgive sins. We are all called to share in His glory, and it isn’t up to the authority of the church to determine that. It is the authority through God alone that gives all of us the authority. Something I had my eyes open to after I converted out of Catholicism to true faith in Jesus.

Also, everybody in the Catholic Church is supposed to spread the Gospel, heal people, cast out demons and do miracles in Jesus' name, because Jesus said that to the 72 when He sent them. @devinmason5738 2 місяці тому +1

This is a very fair explanation. A good friend of mine asked me about some of these things. One thing I cautioned him about was a three-point argument against praying to the saints. 1. God makes it very clear that we are not to attempt to contact the dead. This is an occult practice it is demonic and it is strictly forbidden by God's law. This would apply to anyone whose body is no longer living. (Jesus is not dead) 2. The saints especially Mary could never answer your prayer when there are literally about a billion people praying to her everyday. She is not omniscient she is not God. 3. The scripture does not give any permission to anyone to be praying to anyone other than The father himself. It doesn't even tell you to pray to Jesus. It's specifically tells you to pray to the Father in Jesus name. Praying to anyone else would be against the word of God. The scripture tells you to spend as much time as possible praying to the Father. Anytime you're praying to someone else you are taking away from your prayer time with the Father and that is a demonic deception. Only Satan would try to interrupt your time with the father so that you could pray to someone who can't hear you.

TOO MANY POPES in the past have been responsible for disgusting acts of depraved sin, why would god give the keys to the kingdom to a lineage of people that at one point in time were Sadists and bordered on mocking god himself. Look into the history of popes and saints, not many of these men were truly living in the path Christ set out for us. • @vtaylor21
      @vtaylor21 Місяць тому

Correct. The big difference is justification. Protestants believe justification is a time event. Catholics believe there is a continued growth in justification. As we become more sanctified in our Christian growth, we become more justified.
It is the initial justification (when we give our life to Christ) that we are saved by faith alone. We become habitually justified when we perform the works made by God after we become part of the Body of Christ (Eph 2:10).
The Council of Trent explains this, and the Bible mentions 3 separate events of Abraham being justified by God.

The Lord is our Creator, but we choose to sin and so we choose the devil. We are hopeless, and that is why Jesus came to us. To save us, yes, but also to bring the sword. There are BILLIONS of people in this world, who despite being outwardly very sweet and well mannered, would not lift a finger to save you from death and damnation. This is all from the scripture.

This is pretty good explanation- the only piece missing here is the whole purpose of the Catholic faith which is to engage in the process of sanctification through our walk with Christ and the participation in the sacraments. You said it was about authority but that’s not really the point, it’s the earthly body of Christ, so the church has the authority to administer sacraments and provides a structure for the teachings to remain intact throughout the centuries and a place for the people to gather and worship but the goal is sanctification. It is difficult to walk the path without the guides the church provides and without the sacraments. The saints also give us their testimonies and keep us ever moving towards the Lord by their physical examples. That is why we revere them. Everything is working in tandem.
