    Thanks for filming this. Hoping she can be repaired quickly. With Britannia and Tornado still out and all those xmas tours to haul, she's needed. Good to see her in stream and zipping along.

    I remember when in my early teens waiting for a connection at Crewe on a cold night in winter and the mail train came in and standing beside the loco and getting nicely warmed up but that was in the good? old days when everything was steam, I think we were waiting for the train for Stranraer to get the ferry across to Ireland , happy memories of steam train travel

    Poor old Sir Nigel Gresley, you can't get the same quality parts that you could when it was built.
    Even the steam coal has to be imported.
    They should have had 2 Black Fives double heading, that would have been a great sight to see.

    Was on this tour, as a relatively new railway fan it was an absolute pleasure to ride behind all of the locos involved. Curious - could they have not used the 40 we left behind at York for this rescue?

    • @TRAlNVlDEOS
      @TRAlNVlDEOS  8 місяців тому

      The class 40 which you left behind at York had travelled up to Scotland pulling the Class 20 with it on Friday evening, the reason they didn’t use the class 40 for the rescue was because that would mean it travelling back up to Scotland and then back down again which would use more fuel and be more expensive, Thanks for the comment!

    im new to trainspotting so can i just ask is there any difference between the A4s (i think thats the class they are) or are they just all the same with different names, and could SNG of got the speed record instead of mallard or was there something specific about mallard that allowed it to break that speed record.

    • @tonyramsden4153
      @tonyramsden4153 8 місяців тому +2

      In British Railways days they were all pretty much the same apart from detail differences such as some having corridor tenders. They looked different from their appearance pre-war because of the side valances (as per Mallard today) which were removed during the war to make access for maintenance easier. As regards SNG getting the speed record, Mallard was one of 4 A4s fitted with the Kylchap double exhaust system which makes for more free-running steaming and it's thought that this was a factor in gaining the record. SNG didn't have that system at the time (it, along with the others with single chimneys, was fitted with one in the 1950s) so it's unlikely. However, SNG (with Kylchap exhaust) did reach 112mph in 1959.

    When you see the amount of pollution coming out the chimney of that kettle you have to ask is it ecologically sound to keep them running rather than give em a good lick of paint and grease and put them in a museum ? class 20 was purring nicely and not pouring clag out into the atmosphere as so many heritage diesels seem to.

      If you knew steam engines, you'd guess they were keeping a minimum "holding fire" going for lubrication purposes. The clouds you see are "wet steam", from where the boiler is at minimum temperature and the superheaters are not working.
