Bear with me here... I know you love the You Tube side of your profession and you still love getting down and dirty with the mechanical side of it. I just can't believe someone doesn't see the potential of you as a hands on teacher in a shop. Especially a CAT shop. You're young enough to appeal to our younger generation, and mature enough to command a student's attention. As our nation loses tradesmen, yourself and others like you could help get people out of their computer chair and return the trades to their once respected place in our country. Keep up the hard work. As a soon to be 70 year old who has been a steel fitter/welder for 30 some years, and a trucker (still running CAT power from east coast to the north west and back ) the remainder of my working years, I respect your dedication to keeping us running. Sorry for the rant lol.
Where are all the thumbs up? This guy deserves our support! It's not easy making these videos on top of all the hard work of diagnosing & wrenching. I know he's taught me a lot over the years! Great job! From a trucker of 29 years with a mechanic background!
Thank you for the shout out Josh. Its an Allison Transmission. The email wording confused you. The 2nd engine needed a 340A Jake Brake. That was the problem. 😅. Great to see you out with your van. Cheers Josh. 🔩🔧👊👍💪👊
Josh you severely underestimate how important it is for a truck owner to trust their engine mechanic. They will tow their truck half way across the country for you before they ever let a random shop touch it.
For sure, didn’t take very long after buying my first truck to come to the realization that I’d gladly pay twice the rate for a competent mechanic that actually fixed the issue instead of putting bandaids on the symptoms and calling it a day
I think that is true for any vehicle owner, finding a good mechanic is really hard, first you have to reject dealers, and then ,the known useless. Then you have to go on a mission to find those that are regarded as too expensive for what they do. When you find someone who seems to be ok, you have to take notice, do they upsell,or t'other way ? and do they take notice of what you want out of the deal ? (I used a very decent mech for some time that kept the motors fine but ignored what he felt did not need doing, even when I explained why I wanted it done ).
1:09 'Ticking sounds!' Josh is an expert on those sounds now, even on 4.3 gas v6's! 😅😂 I know the frustration that comes with a sound like that when you can't find it but know its not quite right! 👍🏻👌🏻🛠️🔧🔩🦺🚜🏗️🚧 ✊🏻🇺🇸🦅🇺🇸✊🏻
4:53 I agree I've always been amazed at watching the valvetrain running and thinking about 2 or 3 times that rpm air is still getting in & out plus injectors firing at such high rate of speeds it's crazy! The old Detroit 2 strokes valvetrain are real fun to watch too! 👍🏻👌🏻
Hi Josh, just noticed when you started the first engine to comfirm the exhaust leak, you filmed no1 exhaust manifold, in the top of the screen there's a bolt or stud, you can see the washer vibrating around, to me that indicates a loose bolt or nut. You may not have noticed it. Loved the channel and content
I guess it's more useless information for me, I have a Cummins, but I do enjoy watching your videos. Didn't know you were in the entertainment industry did you. Keep the good stuff coming.
Josh. One of my drivers wanted an overhead. I went to do the work and couldn't adjust the Jake on number 6 . The valve had beat up seat soooooo much... there wasn't any Jake clearance to be had! Stem was so high I had to cut the top of a valve bridge to make it work . Overheads can tell you a LOT! IF YOU CHECK THE CLEARANCE BEFORE ADJUSTING. Planned an out of frame ASAP.
Exhaust leaks can make such a tick noise, I’ve been convinced of valve train noise before and all but ready to start pulling things apart before finding an exhaust leak.
I work in a shop with my dad we have lots of people come in to have overheads we either have an appointment made or can get them done within a few days
I ran into the same problem with the 9 pin plug. The y adapter fr the eld has a 4 screw flange on it instead of a nut to hold it to the dash. I drilled my dash and used taper headed machine screws and nuts.
Saw some engines that an overhead wasn't done for so long. Valve clearance got so tight they dropped a valve..good overhead can increase fuel mileage huge. Usually pays for itself in just a few weeks
Ya. Problem is most shops want the mechanic to turn jobs fast....so sloppy work show up constantly my last foreman was unbelievable Nothing was fast enough. Lots of problems
Can you do a video on how you clean and paint the engines your work on. What you try to keep protected on the engine and just tips tricks trying to level up my game.
Great show! IMO as knowledgeable in electronics, the resistance values of 2 to 11 or 49 ohms is just a clue. They all could operating fine, what you worry about is the power coming in/going in to actuate them, as in "Is there enough power?" as from an electrical point of view, I would want a 49 ohm rather than a 2 ohm resistance, as the 2 ohm draws much more current, which is a bad thing for overheating the wiring.
How often do you seen the wire harness under valve covers having problems. We have a couple that seem old and brittle. Could that cause performance problem
Not really knowing if the mechanic at the dealership is conscientious and well trained/experienced is a big deal for me. I love hiring people I know and have faith in.
I want the over hhead in my 59 cummins done I know I can do it but would definitely like someone you you to do it . I'm a transmission mechanic and over heads aren't my thing
Hey brother im here in chicago have looked into applying to the cat dealer here 2 questions 1 hows the background check process or are all dealers different and 2 i have 14 yr experienxe in truck and garbage industry im familiar w hydraulics and diesel would i still be better applying as apprentice if i dont have specific cat dealer experience. Thanks brother love your work and content
I know it’s basically impossible to diagnose something on the internet but what do you think would be causing a loud popping when the Jake is on. It sounds normal for a couple seconds then starts popping really loud.
Dropping off the truck isn’t the issue, dropping it off for 3 weeks to get an hour or two of work done is the problem. Also I’ve had far more bad experiences in shops from incompetent mechanics either making things worse or throwing a bandaid on something and telling me it’s fixed just to have it be a issue again a few days later. Having a mechanic you feel is trustworthy is huge and unfortunately uncommon no matter where you go, been screwed plenty of times at Cat dealers.
Hey man im having an issue with my c13. I hooked it up to a computer n its saying low oil pressure. I changed the oil n filter the pressure went up 5 psi but im not sure if itll stay. Any guess on the issue?

I own 4 trucks in AZ. Your theory on maintenance is 100% spot on and I think your new business is awesome. Your killing it, keep it up!
Some millionaire needs to help Jake set up a nice shop. Any Cat owner would drive 1000 miles to have him do their overhaul.

Thanks for taking the time to record your work. I always learn stuff from evey video.

When you start the first one up and look at the manifold where the exhaust leak is the washer under the top manifold bolt is spinning from vibration!😂

Cat has always had exhaust sealing problems. 3/8 studs with spacers have never worked well. Either won’t hold or break.
Ok so i cant find more information on what you saw at 3:45 the bypass. Is that them bypassing the DEF system?

Hello Josh. Do you happen to work on Cummins six 15 by chance
That 310 cat would pull, and top out at 93mph, with 390 rears
Doesn't the computer derate the engine and the check engine light come on when you unplug the IVA's?
Ah but see have we asked the ecm if the IVAs are actually unplugged?

Do you honk the horn before starting the truck like you were required to at Western states?
Hahaha. My dealer just replaced everything instead of ACTUALLY DIAGNOSING stuff. New solenoids, harnesses and relays, even a new switch on the dash…
Josh, do you run over heads on Cummins ISX15 and where can we get in touch with you.
Well, I've only done 1 of them, so I'm not as familiar as on the Cat engines. AdeptApe@yahoo.com is how to get ahold of me.
I'm needing a overhead on my C15 Acert, How can I get in contact with ya, don't have a mechanic I can trust.
You set the valves after you had ran the engine? I thought you were supposed to set the valves while the engine was cold?.
You can run it a little bit, you don't want it to warm up though. So a minute or two max usually.
I know it’s basically impossible to diagnose something on the internet but what do you think would be causing a loud popping when the Jake is on. It sounds normal for a couple seconds then starts popping really loud.
Could be a Jake actuator hanging up possibly, then it is combusting through the exhaust instead.

what would cause a cm 870 to blow LOTS AND LOTS of combustioin air into fuel return?? fyi,not injectors made no change

Anyone see the loose bolt at 2:19?
That's actually the IVA oil solenoid it looks like, not that it matters as the customer has it bypassed on this engine.
