      Because our culture has degenerated. A largely uneducated populace vis-a-vis music, film, theatre, literature. (And almost wholly ignorant of the natural sciences and mathematics).

    I love Bob Hope. & he was always funny. The Chinese restaurant sketch, funny as it was, could never be done in today's PC culture.

      None of that old humor could be alright today…yet back then, everyone laughed because everyone was a target.

    This aired 18 days before I was born. Bob Hope always had really good monologues - topical without being patronizing; critical while being respectful at the same time.

      Bob and Bobby, a tough pair to beat.
      This special was much better than the ones he did later in the 60s.@@tonychristo8733

    Those debs were so beautiful, especially Shelley Fabares and Paula Prentiss, and Bob Hope couldn't have been funnier, especially with Joan Crawford by his side. Those 1961 Buicks were pretty cool as well and I'm sure there is a 1961 Buick in a barn somewhere waiting to be restored.

      IMO ALL of the 1961 cars from ALL manufacturers (Buicks included) looked very mundane and pedestrian. They wouldn’t start looking really good again until 1964 IMO.

    We weren’t doing “kines” in 1960. Videotape was introduced in late 1957 and in wide use in 1958. Kinescopes were seen in the West for delayed broadcasts of color programming but by 1960 color videotape had been introduced. After that kinescopes were used for delayed broadcasts to the few stations that did not yet have tape machines (Guam for example).

      I remember showing a scene of the Elvis Presley movie, 'Blue Hawaii,' to a friend of mine one time.
      It was the scene where Elvis is driving with the schoolteacher and her foursome of female students in the convertible with him.
      My friend was watching.......and then he sees her (Maxwell) with the mean look on her face. She played the role of the spoiled, miserable brat.
      My friend looked both confused and curious and said, 'THAT one on the right looks like a real........BITCH!!'. LOL
      So there you go.

    The begging half of it was replaced by a kine scope copy ,due to possible tape damage on that part,but it got back to video tape after that.

    I wouldn't call Shelley Fabares a true "deb" star, being that she was better known than any of the others at the time, thanks to being on DONNA REED. And Paula Prentiss would co star with Hope the following year in the film BACHELOR IN PARADISE.

  • @michaelmcgee8543

    Only Paula Prentiss ,where the boys are and Shelley Fabre ,up to a point , would succeed.

    This does not look like kinescope .Like it was shot on a normal movie camera simultaneously.Bob really hated that kine scope look

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines 6 років тому +1

      The majority of this show is on videotape. For some reason, part of the introduction and Hope's monologue were "lifted" from a kinescope.

    Interesting the audio is real high-fidelity almost stereo, like it was recorded on audiotape, yet the video is definitely a kinnie (film). My guess is they used mag-stock for audio sync'd to film. Too crisp for a typical optical track.

    • @marvinmuonekejazz
      @marvinmuonekejazz 10 років тому +3

      Very interesting indeed. If only all kinescopes were preserved that way. They would be more enjoyable.

    • @fromthesidelines
      @fromthesidelines 9 років тому +3

      Most of the show is on videotape- part of the opening and Hope's monologue was "kinnied".

    • @musicom67
      @musicom67 9 років тому +3

      Barry I. Grauman Yeah, the tape ops probably had issues with the video portion tracking properly on the quad tape (whenever this was re-mastered years later) and used the kinnie as a replacement to complete the program - like other early videotaped shows that are being / have been preserved. I'll assume Les Brown was the musical director - but surprised he's not credited!

    Jenny Maxwell is best known today for being the "Babysitter" on "THE TWILIGHT ZONE" episode "Long Distance Call" {3/31/61} ["No one! He didn't talk to NO ONE.....he just sat up in his room all day, talking on that toy telephone of his....HONEST!"]. She passed away in 1980.

    • @FischerFan
      @FischerFan Рік тому +1

      Not quite. She is best remembered for her role in the Elvis Presley box office smash, 'Blue Hawaii'. In fact, she got the role because Norman Taurog, the director of the Presley movie; saw Maxwell ON that episode of 'The Twilight Zone'.
      She was murdered in 1981.
