Just thought I’d add my two cents as a mopar guy that’s dabbled in handling for the benefit of anyone else that would be interested in doing this, the stock mopar setup is actually pretty good and miles better than what most domestics had at the time. The main weaknesses are the flex in the upper control arm mounts/shock towers and the steering link setup. A strut tower brace can help one of these cars tremendously as well as some gusseting around the mounts, in addition to what Kevin has already put on the car.
Sway bars are definitely available from multiple manufacturers for b bodies, and though it’s a bit more of a pain in the ass to adjust, with different spring rates to fit your needs(replacing torsion bars) you’d have adjustable ride height and shock valving, in a suspension with low center of gravity and a fairly consistent camber curve throughout the travel. Not bad for 1950s tech. See the mopar action green valiant articles for better explanations than I can give.
    Excellent vid as always man

You would be surprised how easy it is to powder coat parts that size yourself. All you need is a cheap powder coating gun from Harbor freight. And a market place electric stove and boom powder coating job complete. I actually powder coat my lead projectiles for my reloads. Instead of using grease lube or tumble lubes like Lee liquid alox. And for that I don’t even use the powder coating gun I just shake all the projectiles around in a plastic sour cream container. That creates enough static electricity for the powder to stick. Then I pick each one out of the powder tap off the excess. Then place each one in a small toaster oven bake at 450 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. Boom bag pow a projectile capable of handling 2500 fps. Even more if you gas check them but all that aside my point is powder coating is extremely cheap and easy.

Only thing I can think of off the top of my head is the really heavy oil you put in it might have brought the pressure up a little too much and blew out the head gasket. It's telling that really the only thing that got changed on it after the break in was the oil, and the cylinders were full of oil, so it feels like oil pressure to me. That motor should run fine on 30 or 40 weight oil.

I had to go back to part 2 and see if I could figure out why its now a V6. That big heat cycle during break-in, especially since it got pretty hot, didn't help, and might have blown the head gasket. However, I think the main culprit has to be the exhaust valve seats. Go back to part 2 and look at the discovery you made with the exhaust ports and painters tape. Perhaps the break in was the last bit of life for the gaskets and/or seats. Bottom end should be fine, but the heads clearly need love. OR get a motorhome 440.

    • @JunkyardDigs
      @JunkyardDigs  Рік тому

Funny part is driver side was the better four exhaust valves, also that heat spike was probably superheated air since it was stuck at the thermostat. Wants a big bubble came out she was good to go.

For pure straight line speed better off with the full frame torsion bar actually. Some of that metal pulled is surprisingly high quality as well. "Systemically" you need to break down how the system engineers first made these items into engine, drive train and *"load bearing"* i think is the technical term (capable of holding its own weight without collapsing upon itself) so these are all absolutely remarkable machines from not just meeting the basic requirements of wheeled transportation (as not much has changed since the time of Chariots until around this time excluding Railroads) so how this system wholly integrated then using a torsion bar provider "flex" you're spot on about the bushings....but that's the genius of the design. "Just change out the bushings" and just like that you're done.
These arent made for Nascar work of course but that isn't the point of US Das Auto (and why Tesla does so well in North America and Canada) because all i in fact need is that "flex" (frame to bar plus bushing) and it's truly an amazingly economical and performance take on what otherwise should be impossible ifm you're coming from Europe, Asia or Western Russia where demand challenges around creating unsprung weight are *IMMENSE* and normative left to Britsh then later German then later French and Italian engineers...and yes these all had to be *MACHINED USING A LATHE* not stamped...and trust me you'd be surprised just how strong, stiff amd superior a stamped product can be over these so called upgrades.
Plus you're talking $25.00 US Dollars not $2500.00 US Dollars.
Possible you could buy a stamping machine and make your own parts in point of fact that's how well engineered in every way these vehicles still are more so today than ever.

Pretty big shot in the dark I know, but the dyno operator that dynoed his engine said this can happen sometimes with modern aftermarket cams. Cheers from southern MN.

A few tips from a long time Mopar fan: Your alternator needs bushings for the long bolt that threads into the head, otherwise you will never get it aligned correctly and the threads in the head will strip out. I hope you replaced the lower control arm bushings. They are the most common failure point in these cars. Hellwig makes sway bars for these cars. Firm Feel and Bergman Auto Craft are The Mopar suspension Gurus.

Sorry to be commenting a month late. I was actually watching the vid a second time for the good information. Wanted to say THANK YOU KEVIN for putting good chrome wheels and white letter tires on this classic !!!!!!!! I enjoy your channel and many others like it and am totally sick of seeing people but butt ugly steel wheels and hubcaps on these great old rigs!. When I was a teen way back in the late 70's we spent our hay hauling and yard mowing money to get nice wheels and tires so we wouldn't look like we were driving grampa's car. Every car in the school lot had what we now call patina and we were all proud of them. I'm a Ford dude and Thank You as well for standing up for and working on Fords when the other channels just talk crap about them. Don't know if you will ever see a comment this late but know that I'm a big fan of you and Mook , and Angus too. Also Dalton and JD from pole barn garage. Keep up the good work.

I really dig the fact you put Mopar front discs on it.
Sort of a factory upgrade. Nothing wrong with modern discs and coilovers, but part of the charm of these cars is that they *don't* feel like a new car.

Love the show but you know nothing about chrysler torsion bar system they work great and will handle good with proper maintenance you forgot to check that bushings in the lower tables at the torsion bar that is crucial in success in your rebuild the other issue the big q a 1 systems have the higher grade kits the body was never designed to hold the car weight at the front you actually handle better if you leave the torsion bars in . So when you get a moopar expert in your vicinity ask him about the proper system for mopars !!!

Well now that the motor isn't happy you might as well put a Hemi in it 🤣
Actually if you wanted to put a new motor in it a 340 would probably accept all the new parts you put on that motor with them both being small blocks and such. Or you could replace the head gasket on that one, but, you know, that's not as fun to think about.

When you torque the lower control arm inner bushing mount to the k frame the lower control arm should be positioned approximately at ride height. The way you did it will have the lower control arm bushing constantly stressed and destroyed before long if it isn't already.

    I’d recommend swapping in a 5.2 or 5.9 magnum (318, 360).
    They’re cheap and plentiful.
Plus they’re a roller motor and have some really good factory glowing heads.
Slap on a carb intake, elec distributor and you’re ready to rock.

As my teacher used to tell us: "A mechanic cant work without data" So, yeah. It s important to check what torque the different bolts and nuts need. And I didnt knew that you can damage the torque wench by moving it abit further after the click. I will take that into account next time I use one
And also, as I saw you had worked with grease for the wheel bearing. Remember to degrease the brake disc. Im always being careful of that and degreasing the disc if I happens to put some on there. I had learned, and been told alot, that it will decrease the braking effect. Even making it feel like it is fading

I've never had it happen myself but have always heard this is a risk of camming an old engine. That extra compression does not always sit well with the old head gaskets - and sometimes the damage doesn't show up until the engine cools after break in. I've heard old timers claim this, at any rate. Could be the case.
