This is great! However, the option of extracting the chain isn´t visible in Live 12. Are you familiar with this? I can however drag one of the instruments out of the rack and place it in session view, so I guess thats the same thing. And two more questions: 1. I need to have the faders up on the TR-8S up in order to hear the recording in Ableton? 2. When I have extracted an instrument, eg. a BD, and I ad delay through the send on that track, the delay reflects on all the recorded instrumetns in the drum rack. How can I only get delay on the track that I have assigned the dealy to?
I've only had time to have a very quick look at this, and wasn't able to reproduce this issue with the chains in Live 12, is this still occurring? The volume issue is likely the TR-8S volume faders sending CC values that Ableton is picking up. I can't remember the default behaviour, will need to check. If you add an effect chain inside the drum rack this will allow you to treat individual drums.
for use the virtual keyboard is necessary a midi cable, or is direct with the usb? cause i followed the step, the drum work but just with the input by drum. i cannot control the sound on the daw.
Hi, Iv tried to copy this as I’m not on Facebook and cannot get the file, I’m also using Live 9 When I set the external instrument parameters to the correct settings, I’m hearing no sound when the instruments is embedded into the drum rack. If the same setting are applied without the external instrument being embedded it works and I can hear the sounds coming through. It sure where I’m going wrong?
The rack was created in Live 10, so the file only works in 10 and 11 at the moment. I'm not aware of anything being different in Live 9 that might prevent it from working but I haven't tested it in Live 9. How do you have the audio setup, are you using the individual USB channels? Do these work correctly without the rack as audio channels?
@@compuphonic thanks for the reply Stuart. Yeah, the Tr8S is set to individual out over USB. If I do a single instance of each output coming through individual External Audio Devices, it works flawlessly I can even set the delay compensation so everything is in sync. But once they are converted or inserted into the drum rack, the sound doesn’t come through even though the settings are identical. Ideally it would be good to have all the external device instruments grouped together when programming patterns.
@@mickash01 I fired up my old Mac with Live9 and created a new drum rack. Appeared to work fine using individual USB channels but I didn’t have time to test thoroughly. I’d suggest adding one chain at a time and test before adding the next. The ALT sounds don’t need an audio input set although this won’t stop it working. Check that you have the TR-8S set as the audio input device (or an aggregate containing it) in Ableton settings.

I've noticed that you have to have your tr8s output track in preferences set to "on" before you start a new session otherwise the midi configuration that should load (tr8s, ch10) is left blank and you can't set it to the preset without having the output track activated.. anyone else getting this? I was able to get it to work a couple of times, but the software/hardware pairing seems very finicky.

Yes you can trigger drum sounds on the TR-8S from Ableton patterns. I don't know if these can be recorded into the TR-8S. I don't expect that part to work.
In my own setup I do occasionally use USB midi for convenience. The majority of use is via DIN MIDI. You correctly spotted the Emagic UnitorII (also have an AMT8 and both still working well) however I use these for synths and other midi devices. The TR-8S is currently using a E-RM Multiclcock. Previously I'd been using an Expert Sleepers ES-40/ESX-MD for midi clock duties. While this is very flexible, the Multiclock is quicker to use.
Thanks this works great for using push and controlling midi from DAW, any ideas how to control each drum voices audio? i dont want use TR8S and sound card and run audio thorough USB. But want more control over each individual sound to process?

Check in Utility that Pattern Ch is set to 10. Also check the Inst Note settings are set to the default values (the rack responds to the default note assignments). If you are using USB MIDI check you are sending to the first port, not the control one.
There are a couple of existing M4L devices in the Announcements section of the FB group. Ensure your TR is set to send and receive controller data in Utility setup. Any specific issues you’re having?

Thanks. Must admit I don't use Har-Bal that often now. I've been thinking about doing some more videos on different plugins and apps, so I may consider it if I can remember my way around it! Not promising anything, but good suggestion
The chains are in order, however Ableton arranges the pads by midi note. If you wanted to achieve this you could change the default midi notes the TR-8S uses and update the rack to match.
Thanks for sharing! I'm having a problem where only the first C1 key plays in slice mode and none of the other midi keys trigger a sample unless in 'classic' or 'one shot'. This might be more of an ableton question.. (the receive and plays are mapped correctly). Thanks again, I'm looking forward to using this

I have followed your instructions in the video but for some reason when I try to record with the Output turned off there is no nothing to record in from? Also when I turn off the input and and turn on the output for Playback I hear nothing (prob because it got nothing to begin with since there's no TR8s in the External Instrument. I see it only when I turn back on the Output. Also when I extract a single part of the chain it exports the whole pattern instead of a single instrument as it did for you? Any hints to what is going wrong would be massively appreciated as I really want to get this working :)

It's working, mostly, however I'm getting notes played in from the TR8S, that are recording as midi in Ableton but, when playing back, as they are not assigned a "instrument" within the drum rack, i.e. they are just showing as a note playing, when playing back the midi through the Tr8, these notes are then not recognized? Any thoughts?
Hi Adam, first question would be are you using my drum rack? Somebody else posted their rack recently and it doesn't deal with ALT notes which sounds like the issue you are having. Also check that the midi note assignments in the TR-8S Utility settings are using the defaults.
Hi Stuart, thanks for coming back to me. Good question, I downloaded the first one I saw on the Facebook page. Maybe it was the wrong one...I'll have a look. I didn't change any settings in the TR8S with regards to midi note settings. You mentioned thet the notes displayed on the drum machine are an octave out? So I need to set the note value within the drum rack to an octave higher than what's displayed in the machine? Once again, thanks for your reply. I'll see if it's the drum rack itself causing the issue...
Hi Stuart Id just like to say this absolutely great and will really open up the TR8s with ableton, thanks a lot. Im just having a bit of an issue if you can help at all. So.. When I open up the rack, the BD ,for example, is on Receive E3 and Play on C1, with the Midi coming through on C1, but when I move the receive of the BD to C1 so that it is on the midi note the kick is playing on I get a doubling up of the sound. Ive read a lot of people having issues with doubling up sound on the TR8S but id sorted that out and it doesn't double up when just playing it on 11 audio channels so I don't think its that usual issue people are having. Any help would be great.
Tim, If using the tr8s as sound card you will need to take your speakers out of assignable outs 1 & 2 on the tr8s rather than the master out. These outputs will read as out puts 3 & 4 in your daw. If you set your master channel in your daw to output through 3/4 rather than 1/2 . You will then get playback of your daw only through the tr8s assignable outs and through your speakers and eliminate the double up sound.

Why do i have latency, is there any way to get rid of it ?? i press spacebar and play on my mac but tr8s plays a bit delayed all the time any way to fix it ??
In Ableton Midi Prefs, under Midi Ports, adjust the Midi Clock sync delay for the TR-8S output port. Once set avoid adding or removing any plugins as this will require the setting to be adjusted again, so best to record your TR-8S parts early on in a session. Also try using DIN midi instead of USB, or consider a stable clock source like USAMO or ERM multiclcock
hahah I using 9 suit. I pause and rewind pause rewind.... slow motion.. and was able to copy what note you had plugged in and manually did everything. It works for sure tho. took me weeks to figure out the issue

I’ve followed the directions but when it comes time to record in ableton it do not record and midi data

Very possible. I wouldn't use a drum rack though unless I am using my own samples with the Tr8

I see you have a unitor as well. Have you done the proper sync via midi instead of usb?

Assign the input to the appropriate utility device for the pad. Or create a new audio track for each input you want to record.

In addition to this... using your drum rack I can now sequence the TR8S with Ableton Push 2 as well....now a very flexible set-up 😊

Hi Tim, you shouldn’t need to remap any midi note assignments unless you’ve customised the TR-8S Config. What are you trying to do?

Works with usb or using the audio outs, just set the external instrument as you would normally to get TR-8 audio into Ableton.
