Hi! I did not try for a permit, so unfortunately I am not sure how challenging it can be to obtain it in the "day before" lottery. I would imagine that it might be easier in January than most other times of the year because it is definitely the low season for Zion. Good luck, hope you can get it!
This particular trip I actually remember I thought it was a bit warm for winter. I think the high was probably in the mid 50s and low was probably low 40s
I don't remember specifically about the car rental, I want to say around $150 for the weekend. The hotel was a really great price at around $90 per night. A great advantage as the off-season, as other times of the year hotels can average $200-$300 per night in that area!
