In South Africa, some 3,800 babies are abandoned each year - that's ten every day. Sadly, the figure is steadily increasing. In the meantime, the adoption rate is in freefall. Beyond poverty and cultural aspects, critics say there are too many obstacles hindering the adoption process. Our correspondents in South Africa take a closer look.

THE MEN WHO MAKE THESE WOMEN PREGNANT AND ABANDONED THE WOMEN AND THE CHILD SHOULD BE BROUGHT TO JUSTICE. IT IS TIME THAT EVERY CITIZEN SHOULD GIVE THEIR BLOOD TO PROVIDE DNA RECORD. THE ABANDONED BABY CAB BE TESTED FOR THEIR DNA AND ARREST MADE ON THE MAN WHO HAS THE SAME DNA.

wang tie You are right. Men need to be made 50% responsible financially and in the case of rape they should be 100% financially responsible for the life of the child until it’s an adult and men who rape while knowingly carrying HIV or AIDS, need to face murder charges and jail time.

Ending social discrimination against illegitimacy and providing provisions for infants and childlren like the WIC (women and infant children social services program) they have in the US might held. It's not a perfect solution, but it might help.

Yeah? Well maybe they should be more open to LGBTI adoptions and these kids would have loving homes. Not only that stop the extreme adoption costs and extortive practices of adoption agencies.

What are you talking about? Same sex couples are allowed to adopt, as are others in the LGBT community. That would be against the basics of the constitution. Agencies might charges ridiculously high amounts, but they are allowed to adopt.

JTube You’re obviously not paying attention. Trump ordered federal and state officials to look for new opportunity to work with faith based agencies and then also said that faith based agencies do not have to adopt to the LGBT, which means neither do government adoption agencies who work with faith based ones. They created a loophole for discrimination against the LGBT adoptions by using freedom of religion and a back door so that government agencies now have a way to discriminate by working only with faith based agencies. It will end up in the Supreme Court because government funded agencies can not legally discriminate because they cannot give preference of law to any one faith. So it will lose, however a lot if families will miss out on the window to adopt while the fight takes years to reach the courts.

Dragonfly Moon This is in South Africa. One must be a south African citizen or permanent resident to adopt. Personally, I feel this requirement is a mistake as it deprives kids of families internationally, but it is the law. Please educate yourself before making assumptions.

I have worked with the LGBTI in Africa since 2012. It is a social norm to discriminate against the LGBTI in all countries in Africa, regardless of the laws. They just find sneaky ways to do it. If you knew anything about the culture, I wouldn’t have to tell you that. Discrimination is systemic. You made yourself look like a fool.

@@dragonflymoon8020 You are the one who mentioned Trump, not me. He has nothing to do with this. So please, don't pretend to understand this. Also, I never stated that private agencies don't sometimes discriminate. Or that homophobia isn't rife. But, the state agencies may not discriminate. That would get their department sued. If you knew anything you'd know that people can adopt through public agencies, even if it takes longer, that Trump is not involved (which you said he was, clearly showing a lack of common sense in this scenario, as the title alone would have told you this isn't about the USA). Furthermore, saying I'm making a fool of myself, despite having used facts to dispute your rather foolish assumptions, shows the maturity of a five year old. Bottom line, there's no way you are an adult who is part of or works with the LGBTI community as an adult. Please, don't comment false statements. It makes you looks stupider than you already are. Also, I'm not five years old, and I'm not stupid. I have no interest in deleting your silly comments.

Oooh my goodness 🥺, whaaaat do they not know they can get their tubes tied?? That’s so messed up.... bring babies into the world just so they can throw them away??? Ugh I’m adopting as soon as I can from Africa among other places!❤️

Yoniquexhearts It is safer for the men to get it done than it is for women and people in poor areas cannot afford procedures like that. That’s a comment of privilege. Also if you are not FROM Africa, it will be very hard for you to adopt. They don’t like to send children out of the culture if they can prevent it. Africa is their home even if they are having a hard time. They try to adopt within the country as not to deprive the child of their culture.

Dragonfly Moon I’ve been doing research for years about adopting from different countries I know the long expensive process I’ll have to go through but I’m willing to go through that to give a child a safe, happy and healthy home, a lot of African families will indeed give their children to a person or family in a different country if it means that their child will get to live a better life.

Adoption is not expensive. Social workers are not allowed to charge for their services as this opens the door to people buying children. Social workers will give you a break down of the costs and you can make an optional donation.

If government try to stop this inhumanity habit I believe it can. Government can help from technology and law. they must provide rules and technology after punish both men and woman because this a bigger crime.not allow it and provide education and attitudes
