Bear is like a fine Italian handmade shoe. You can feel the love put into it. It’s rewarding to see people still care about the details, whether a digital or tangible product.
I have the same relationship with Bear -- I always want to use it more! :). Simple, Secure, and Minimal … I’d add elegant to that list! Well done review!
The iCloud storage is the best part; simple text files I can see in the file system and aren’t abstracted. The very modest payment goes towards developing and refining the app. They offload storage to iCloud, which is relatively inexpensive and helps them focus on the experience. What’s not to love all around. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the best 1.50 I pay per month bar none. Next is my .99 cents in extra iCloud storage. Lastly, Spotify at 10.00. Those 3 make the core of my personal and work life.
Well done! I like your transparency about how you have a tough time choosing certain tools. This is my first time on your channel and am checking out some of your other vids now. Probably going to subscribe.
I’ve been using Bear for about a year now. I’m torn because there are many things I love about it, but a couple of things I really don’t. The pros for me are: (1) exceptional design, both aesthetically and ergonomically; (2) sticks to the Mac design ethos of “just works” with minimum configuration options; (3) it focusses on one task, instead of trying to be all things to all users; (4) I find its non-standard hierarchical tagging system that allows spaces in tag names extremely powerful and I use it extensively, although I see in some of the comments below that others disagree with me about that. I’m looking forward to the next release with the new editor with outlining/folding (headers and list items), tables, and footnotes support - those are things I really want. However, the cons are: (1) no “graph view” or similar tool if you want use a zettelkasten or other graphing method for note; (2) all notes are stored in a SQLite database, which seems to defeat the purpose of using Markdown - yes you can export notes as Markdown and in many other formats too, but I’d like to be able to use multiple apps to edit one and the same notes. It seems to me that the notes themselves could easily have been stored as plain text files, with attachments in (perhaps hidden) folders, and then the SQLite database just used for Bear’s specific functionality such as its non-standard tags, search index, etc. (3) All notes are stored in a single monolithic “vault” regardless of whether they pertain to my day job, my personal life, or writing projects outside of work. I would really like to be able to separate out these things - if you want to store everything together as a “second brain” you can, but I prefer to keep things separated by project.
I've spent all day looking for alternative to Apple Notes (which is robust but doesn't have text highlighting). Your video was fun, informative, and helped me decide on Bear, especially as the Devs work toward merging the Panda formatting features into the main Bear app down the road. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. Actually, Bear can link notes together with double brackets and it's pretty useful if you want to make something like a table of contents.
I really like how Bear looks and feels, but I have a problem how slow it's development is. Notion is great and would be perfect if data extraction was a real possibility. Obsidian seems to be created for people who know how to code. I can move in it fine, but have a constant fear that if I mess sth up, I won't be able to make it work how I want to again. As to other apps - I'd love to see your take on Craft.
I tried Bear multiple times and wanted to love it, because the UI is so clean and neat. But my brain just can't handle the tagging system 😩 .... Without a regular folder structure it's just impossible to sort the chaos in my head properly😅. I wish they would add that as an option.
I’ve had the same reservation with hashtags. Have you tried secondary levels for hashtags. For example, I have #coursework as a main tag. #Coursework/psychotherapy, #coursework/gestalt and #coursework/choicetheory are secondary tags - all housed within #coursework. It’s not perfect for sure but, for me at least, is becoming enjoyable for its simplicity vs. trying to remember what folder I used to file information when I need to find it. Coming from Evernote where folders rule, it’s been a challenge no doubt.
Ou this looks cool! Never heard of Bear, but looks better than my Notion setup for my UA-cam video ideas. Looks like I might be switching over to Bear!
Harshibar I've tried many apps too. I'm still trying. However, I can say that CRAFT is the best ever. Make sure, Notion-Bear-evernote-trello-taskade etc ... is better than all of them. Yes, it has its shortcomings, but focused study and easy note-taking etc. It increases efficiency a lot.
This is first time I'm hearing about Bear App but seems like currently its not cross platform. 3:57 Yes Evernote has unique set of features, I've been using Evernote for about 10 years now, I've tried different note taking apps but none are meaningful as Evernote. With current new version of Evernote I believe its going in right direction to unify the experience. Eventually it will be more stable and more feature rich I hope ...
I’m with you. Been an Evernote user for about 12 years now. Grew frustrated with it and have looked at so many other apps, but always end up staying with EN because I have so many notes in it and regularly use some of its features to capture, store, search or find content I’ve stored there. Bear is definitely more aesthetic. I really hope EN’s new platform and V10 improves significantly. It’s off to a decent start so far.
I agree. The one thing I'm not fond of is the organization of notes using hashtags. Other than that is a beautiful app. With version 2.0 coming out it will be interesting to see if I stay with Ulysses or switch to bear.
wait what? Parma? 25 minuts by car from where I was born.. wow.. thanks ma'am.. I love Bear and now I love it even more (I will never admit with anybody of Parma tho.. because there are some.. well.. parochialism between the two cities.. LOL) thanks for the amazing video, I have just subscribed and I am already an happy camper!
For just note taking or recoding script snippets, might I suggest Boostnote + (self-hosted) Nextcloud (talking privacy...) or + your preferred cloud solution (seems kinda strange highliting privacy, but keep using iCloud or Gdrive etc.). Boostnote has a free option and no account is necessary. The cloud is only necessary for syncing of course and you can use your own cloud, or the boostnote cloud. It is plattform independent (Windows, Mac, Linux, Mobile only with an account and maybe payed version). If you don't need the full datbase power of notion and/or customizability of Notion/Obsidian/... then I'd say Boostnote looks a lot like Bear, but is not just Apple only.
Thank you, this was really helpful. I need a starter notetaking device for my self-learning developer adventure. Simple is great-the more advanced note apps look intriguing, but I'm the type who will get lost in the sauce. So I should stick with simple (for now). I appreciate the review. Although it did end kind of awkwardly when after singing its praises you were like "*sigh* idk" The other odd thing (for me) is seeing all the markup tags (greyed out, but visible?). I kept thinking that was an editing mode, but as the vid went on, it looked like that was the actual presentation. Seems less "clean," no? Anyway, I'm gonna go try it out. 🙏
Bear looks cool, I think this would work for me but lack of a windows client is a deal breaker. I use both MacOS and Windows, I definitely need something that supports both platforms. I am a Evernote user now, I have been since 2008, but I am absolutely set up with that product. It hasn’t done any better over the years. Granted they have added features, but it hasn’t gotten better and now they’re raising the price again. It’s no longer worth it for me however, I cannot find a really good replacement. Some apps are far too simple and some absurd way too damn complicated. Bear looks like it would be a good replacement however, I need the windows client. Damn!!! Great video. I love your tone do a wonderful job, explaining the pros and cons and just a general features of Bear. I’ll be definitely checking out some more of your videos. Thanks.
Hi 🙋♂️, Could you review iOS Notes app? Compared to Bear. It’s simple. We can include tables, scribble, manage folders and sync between devices with no subscriptions. How Bear is worth the subscription compared to notes app?
thanks for the informative video. i stopped playing with bear long time ago when they only allow very few notes/folder for the free version. I'm glad that has changed and I'll definitely give it a try again. I'm very curious on how bear compares to Apple notes in terms of ease of use and security. seems like both will backup in iCloud and it's very similar.
Many thanks for this video 👍🏻 I was hesitating between Bear and Obsidian. Bear seems as great as minimalist-ish... But the fact that this is only Apple compatible is a no go for me 😞 I do not plan to get my notes on my phone yet, but I don't want to be stucked with an app. Thanks again for this video
How do you make a recipe-box folder and drink folder inside it not being a #-tags. Inability to nest folders makes this up quite useless for me. But I like the fast editing, so I don't cross Bear yet.
Thank you very much for this amazing information! I ll try definetly out! If they store the notes on the computer like obsidian it’s perfect. Well and lovely down as always! Congrats! Chris
Awesome, I’m glad you found the video helpful! The only difference is that the files stored on Obsidian are easier to access in your file browser, but they both have the same security benefits.
@@harshibar , thank you for this important info for me - I use obsidian after notion and love it - but an alternative app just to write and organize the „ private „ stuff is what I am looking for ! Want to go away from Evernote , which quiet cool but I would like to have all only on the computer and a back up . Thanks again! - And the way you do your UA-cam videos is amazing , lovely , funny , entertaining and great with good information ! Love it always ! Thanks ! Not the first time you made my day ! 🍀🍀🍀🌹💐💐💐💐💐🌻
Loved your video. Very clear. It made me want to try the app as I want to drop Evernote. But unfortunately, the tagging system is not for my brain. How to order all the mess of tagged notes with no structure ? How to put different tags in a set of several notes? The multiple-words tag is not really a solution...
you can add 'folders' with tags structured like '#folder/subfolder' i believe. it's certainly not intuitive though, so typically search works better to find notes.
Compliments on your well produced video and presentation. Great work. Oh...and I have Bear too. Trying to learn Obsidian at the moment and wondering what works best for me. Q: Have you tried DRAFTS?
I’ve been a SimpleNote user for the past 9 years but lately I’m experiencing data loss, sometimes after closing the app and sometimes while writing. It’s SO frustrating because I write for a living. Would you recommend Bear for professional writers or is it better for things like school? Thanks! Great video by the way, I love your format setup for the review process 🤩😊🙌
I now use Craft but used Bear for writing for years before switching. It’s great for writing and writing articles and tagging and it’s easy to export to Wordpress or another blogging outlet; but my notes and writing is too complex for the tagging system they have and I ended up using Obsidian and Craft.
Wow that’s really cool, thank you for sharing your insight 😊🙌. Does Craft work across all platforms? I basically need an app which will communicate between an iPhone and a MacBook Pro (no other device is necessary, as I don’t use many others outside of these primary two)
@@djvelocity oh then craft would be perfect for you!! I personally love Craft and I write ALOT!!! It’s an app built within Apple ecosystem so it’s fast and native to the Mac OS. It’s also on web if for some reason you had to get on a Windows computer but it works perfectly if not better on iPad and iPhone then the app on desktop for Mac. Also with Craft it’s an easy export to other apps and bulk export. I hate to hear what happened with you and simplenote. I used to use that too and thought it was more reliable being made from the people who run Wordpress but I had some issues with it some years back and left that app too…but at least with Craft you have the option to sync with their cloud or keep your files stored in json on your iCloud so you won’t really need to back your notes up…they would already be stored on your filing system. I say that but I back my notes up to multiple sources lol…never put all your apples in one basket 😆
This looked very tempting but then I saw it's mac-only. No linux support is a dealbreaker for me, cause that's where I spend the majority of my time. The notes-app search continues... (sigh)

What are your thoughts about Drafts? Could you compare it with bear?
Why don't you try Click Up? I've seen that there are many channels dedicated only to that app, and I tried to use it myself but is a little difficult for me
ive been considering bear as an alternative to notion recently. i know its very different which is why im looking into bear. one of the key features notion is missing for me is offline mode. does bear have this? i tried to look into it and all i could find was something about corrupted files. does that mean bear has no offline mode?
You mentioned a plan for a web app. How would bear maintain the "your data is your data" model with a web app, where your notes would likely need to be on their servers to render on the web app rather than stored locally?
One major downside - MacOS, iOS. So you're "locked-in". You said something about being software engineer. There may be a project, when it'll be more convenient to use Linux or Windows, and you pretty much lose access to your notes. Unless, the app is available for all major platforms it's pretty much no go :( I can't afford losing my notes, just because i switched OS.
Could you check out the 'Craft' notes app from Luki Labs? It's fairly new but looks promising 🌟. They also have a Slack where you can directly communicate with them for e.g. feature requests or bug reports, and they do updates with new features pretty regularly. I think it's iOS only so far but they're working on a web version.
Yes, I have! I really like it (reviewing it next month), especially since they also rolled out features to improve data ownership and privacy. I’m hoping they integrate databases like Notion in the future so I can switch fully.
@@harshibar Ah great, looking forward to that video 🙌! Also same with waiting for db to switch 😄. They said in their Slack a few days ago that 'tables' will come in the upcoming months (and tags). But not sure if it will be comparable to Notion databases in the first version. But we'll see 🤞
Thanks for the comparison! First time visiting your channel and I’ll definitely be back for more. The way I view Bear’s use of iCloud storage (potentially resulting in the need to pay for more) is that if Bear didn’t use that for sync, we would be paying even more for Bear to have their own data infrastructure.

I say that but I back my notes up to multiple sources lol…never put all your apples in one basket 😆
hi, how obsidian works on iPad? if not great, any alternative where I can use the zettalkasten method?
@@ServantStatusMinistries thank you for all of that great information! I never received a notification so I had no idea you replied. Thanks again! 😊🙌
This looked very tempting but then I saw it's mac-only. No linux support is a dealbreaker for me, cause that's where I spend the majority of my time. The notes-app search continues... (sigh)
What are your thoughts about Drafts? Could you compare it with bear?
Searched for bear alternative for windows, found clickup. Have you ever used it? And can you share about your thoughts about clickup if youve used it?
Hi, I was wondering whether I can insert table in bear? I use an iPad .
Good quality video. Subscribed! 😁
Have you used/reviewed WorkFlowy?
Great video, Bear suits you. I liked.
Yes bear works offline since your notes are stored locally!
You mentioned a plan for a web app. How would bear maintain the "your data is your data" model with a web app, where your notes would likely need to be on their servers to render on the web app rather than stored locally?
That's actually a great question -- I never thought of that. I'll try to find out and get back to you!
Google Keep still seems more practical to me. Plus, who knows where Bear will be in a few years’ time?
Bear has been around for a while, so I don’t think it’s going anytime soon. But yea, Keep is super reliable, so you can’t go wrong with either option
Thank you!!!
Can I use bear like evernote web clipper I just need to take snapshots of web pages and tag them
Why did you actually quit your job btw haven’t seen a video on why yet , great content though ,hope you are well : )
One major downside - MacOS, iOS.
I wish it would support Google Drive! Damn!
But we'll see 🤞
So it is not available for my laptop Windows 10 ?
remnote review next?
HOW do you get good quality images on bear?
Thanks for the comparison! First time visiting your channel and I’ll definitely be back for more.
The way I view Bear’s use of iCloud storage (potentially resulting in the need to pay for more) is that if Bear didn’t use that for sync, we would be paying even more for Bear to have their own data infrastructure.
Yep that's for sure!
Have you tried Craft?
