Kent, that Hickory is beautiful. I can see the enjoyment it gave you. Thank you. Graham UK
Thank you, Graham! Happy Turning!
That hickory is a beautiful piece of wood. Maybe you could make a set of salad forks to go with it out of the same wood. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Jim. I could make some like these studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoCkjesA6rda8/edit Happy Turning!
Let me add to the feedback that your explaining why you are doing what you do as you go along makes your turning videos extremely instructive. Thank you very much, Kent.
Thanks for that! Happy Turning!
Well, it's been a long time away from the lathe. Spring, Summer and Fall here is my time to cut, split, and stack firewood for the winter, and keep some nice pieces for turning of course. 16 cords are ready to go so now that most of the outside work is done it is time to start my winter hobby of turning. Kent, your videos are great for me to 1) review all the techniques and 2) very therapeutic to watch - they are very relaxing. Thank you as always for the great videos! That bowl was absolutely beautiful!! Happy Holidays to you and yours!
Really nice Kent. As usual you did a good job teaching. I take a step further and that is to core it that way I can save more of the beautiful wood.
Joseph, you can definitely do that. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Great bowl Kent.
Thank you, Jack!
Great peice. I learned a lot from your videos.
Thank you, Mike. Please subscribe, and Happy Turning!
Beautiful! Thank you!
Thank you, Ryan. Happy Turning!
Stunning
Thank you, Gaz! Cheers!
Spectacular! I want it!
I was waiting until the end of the video to comment on why you didn't core such a large piece, of course you addressed it during commentary so nothing else to say except nice bowl. 😁
Thank you, Lewis. Happy Turning!
Gorgeous
Be-U-T-FULL!! Big bowl. I like it. Turned out real nice. I just found some black olive blanks on side of road. snagged a few logs for just such an occasion. Thanks for sharing
Thank you, Lou! Enjoy that olive. Happy Turning!
Looks great!
Thanks!
We need another Christmas video like last Christmas!
You think Charles? I'll see what I can do. ;)
Thanks Kent, the grain is amazing and you have created a beautiful bowl.
Thank you, Jean! Happy Turning!
My favorite part of turning bowels, goblets, boxes or anything is what the grain pattern and the colors that are hidden within it. Awesome bowel!
Yes, hidden surprises are the best. Happy Turning, Ron!
I was ecstatic when you started this video and said "Hickory" about 10 months ago my family helped me harvest and transport and entire 50' hickory tree for turning. I've made a few spindle turned items ( French rolling pens) and I'm in process of making a morter and pestle similar to your earlier video. I'll be moving into various bowls after that.
Excellent, Daniel. Enjoy that hickory! Happy Turning!
Very Pretty - Awesome colors and grain! Well Done Kent.
Lowell
Thank you! Cheers!
What a beautiful piece of wood ☺☺
Beautiful bow. Hickory does contain sugars, but not as much as Maple. They do make Hickory syrup, it is lighter in color and has a stronger flavor.
Interesting. Thank you and Happy Turning!
That is a beautiful shape and grain.
Thank you, and Happy Turning!
absolutely beautiful bowl. Love your instruction style as well.
Thank you! Cheers!
Lovely work Kent and great result
Glad you enjoyed it, Robert. Happy Turning!
beautiful bowl. I have a 20 "swing with my lathe however the biggest blank so far has been 17 and 3/4". I can't wait to find a big enough blank t max it out.
Sounds fun Chris! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Very awesome, sir. I'm looking forward to getting a big one like this from a chunk of black walnut I recently cut. 😎👍
Sounds great Archie. Enjoy and Happy Turning!
GORGEOUS!!! Wonderful demonstration and thorough explanation. Am only able to turn small bowls but look forward to the day I can up grade my lathe and have a go at turning a larger one. Thank you
Wonderful, Andy! All the best to you and Happy Turning!
Beautiful bowl. I'm working on learning that close sed rim trick. Looks great. One day I'll have it figured out as well as you demo it.
You can do it, Greg! Enjoy and Happy Turning!
Sadly it’s hard to come by good hardwoods here in SW Florida. It’s just palms and live oaks. There used to be cypress but it’s scarce now. I think it would turn well if I could find it.
Drive through some older neighborhoods, especially after storms. You might be surprise what you find when people are cleaning or clearing trees. Oh, and you guys have Norfolk Island Pine! Happy Turning!
Really pretty, good work.
Thank you! Cheers!
Hey Kent, great Vid (so far) While my lathe would not accept a blank anywhere near that big, When roughing in, I generally do the outside 1st before moving to the face, balances and only one move :-) - Tyler
Thanks for sharing Tyler. Happy Turning!
That looks lovely Kent. Good job.
I actually want a to buy a coring system.
I've learned to hollow with lathe running in reverse. This way, there's no leaning over the lathe or holding the butt of the tool far away from my body. I often run the lathe forward when reducing the core. The final passes are done in reverse, with both a gouge and a scraper By the way, the chuck is locked on the spindle with a grub screw.
Yes, that's a good technique. Don't forget that set screw. ;) Happy Turning!
Excellent, instructional video and a beautiful bowl! Can the technique of turning the inside of the bowl utilizing the core mass in the center be used on small bowls as well so you are using both sides of the bowl gouge?
Yes, absolutely, Bob. I use it all the time on most of my bowls. Happy Turning!
I think you mentioned something about a 1/2" 55° sweptback bowl gauge 😁
very nice bowl and once again great explanations
Yes! Thank you! ;) Happy Turning!
Good afternoon Kent I just finished turning a 12" elm live edge bowl finished in triple e but after a few days inside I found fine sawdust under the lip of the bowl so obviously I had some company in the wood would a trip thru the microwave end their day
James, yes, probably. I'm sure there are others ways too. Best of luck.
Thank you Kent I really appreciate the feedback here's a pic
The brown stuff you’re describing is “ caramelization”
You got it Wayne. Thanks.
Very Nice! How thick are the sides?
Hi Kent. How much thinner could you have gotten the walls of this bowl? I like the bowls that I'm going to use frequently to be lighter weight, but not so light that I'm sacrificing durability.
Keith, the larger the bowls don't do great with super thin walls. But this one is surprisingly light. The wall is about 1/3 of the top rim width. Happy Turning!
I decided once when I was turning a large, not very dry wood bowl, that the vibration after it was turned round was at least in part because the wood was heavier on one side than the other. Maybe it was more dense on one side or maybe one part was holding more water. What do you think of my theory?
Myself, I agree! Density can change within a piece of wood, and the moisture can change slightly, too.
Yes, I agree with your assessment. Few things in life are perfectly balanced.
Is there any "rule of thumb" for creating the foot on a bowl in relation to the size of the bowl itself?? I love watching your videos. They have really helped me in my turning.
I recall an early video that said around 1/3 the finished diameter, but that it's use and how stable it needs to be also greatly effect it. It might be in his making tenon video...?
Yes, Howie, about 1/3 of the bowl diameter, but that can vary. Happy Turning!
I am on another wood turning group and they were discussing tear out and what was the best gouge for this. Several people mentioned bottom bowl gouge. What is this and do you recommend it?
i stared doin it but mu bowl tool gets doll fast eny sugestion
Try turning fresh cut "green" wood. Hard, dry woods will dull the tool and require more sharpening. Check out all you need to know about sharpening here turnawoodbowl.com/product/tool-sharpening-for-wood-bowl-turning-online-course/
I'm confused! I don't understand why you didn't core it!
