ROADSIDE Surinamese INDONESIAN STREET FOOD + Wild Açaí | Traveling to Albina, Suriname

- After spending two incredible days in the Surinamese capital of Paramaribo, I was on the move to my next destination, Albina! Come along with me as my friend and guide Imro takes me east to the border with French Guyana and I try some amazing Surinamese Indonesian street food along the way!

We started off with a ride through Paramaribo’s downtown area. It’s the oldest and most historical area of town and boasts lots of Dutch architecture. On our left was the Suriname River riverside, which is where the market is. We headed across a huge brige above the river to a different district within Suriname. Its capital is Albina, our next destination!
The roads are really well paved. They were done within the last 9 years. Before that, they were rocky, dirt roads. Because they’re paved, they’re really smooth and cut your travel time by a lot! We passed through the town of Tamarejo, which is 95% Javanese. There, we stopped at a place called Warung Lenny, which sells Javanese street food.
There were at least 20 different things to choose from! I started with some pommesitair juice, which tasted very healthy, almost like aloe vera juice. It was very refreshing! Then I got my feast, including noodles, two rices, beans, sprouts, peanut dressing, a spicy chili sauce, fried banana, and chicken.
The banana with the peanut sauce was delicious! It was crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The sauce was creamy and spicy, while the chili sauce was crazy spicy! I don’t recommend that one. But the peanut sauce was so yummy and made the fried banana feel like a dessert. The Indo food in Suriname was blowing my mind!
The fried chicken was incredibly fresh and so different from chicken that has been frozen. It was juicier, more tender, and the skin was crunchier. I loved it with the peanut sauce!
The noodles were a little peppery and oily and reminded me of buckwheat noodles. They were a little thick and softer than al dente. The sprouts were crunchy and fresh, and the green beans were also super fresh! There were also some smaller green beans and some rice with soy sauce. I added the peanut sauce to the rice. The chunks of peanuts with the greens was phenomenal! I also added some to the veg, which took it to the next level!
I finished up by dumping the rest of the peanut sauce into the rice and veg and mixing it together. The sweetness and spice was an interesting combination I’d never had before and I loved it! This was some of the best food I’d had in Suriname so far!
From there, we headed on. We found a roadside hut where a woman was selling vegetables including eggplant, beans, and a bitter melon. The melon was bitter and crunchy. We moved on and saw lots of bush along the side of the road. We crossed another bridge and stopped at another roadside hut, where I tried a shot of 90 proof alcohol! It’s an aphrodisiac and was super strong! I also drank fresh coconut water and ate some fresh coconut meat!
After riding for a little longer, we stopped again and got some fresh acai puree in plastic bags. It was super thick and earthy and got all over me as I tried to drink it! We drove into a foggy rain storm as we continued deeper into the rainforest. We could barely see anything but it only lasted 2 minutes!
After passing some traditional, residential buildings, shacks, supermarkets, a school, and lots of jungle, we arrived in the small town of Albina! It was along the river, and across from us was French Guyana. From there, we’d take a ferry north to the Atlantic Ocean to reach Galibi.
I hope you enjoyed joining me on my 4-hour journey to Albina! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up, leave a comment, and subscribe so you don’t miss any of my upcoming travel/food adventures!

Nickerie ( way to speak: Nie Kee Rie) is a district or province in Suriname . A district in the west of Suriname. With a car it takes three hours bij a car to travel a long road, call East West Road from the Capital Paramaribo. The important town in Nickerie is New Nickerie. You have the boarder and a river Nickerie river and at the other sideof the river you have the country Guyana. Many of the people in Nickerie speak also englisch, because the have contact wtih the people of Guyana. Bigi Pan in Nicerie is a big swamp or lake with lot of birds eg flamigos,. You can rent a camp in the lake and stay there some days and fishing in the Bigi Pan Lake. The food it also good in Nickerie.
The boarder river is nog Nickerieriver but Corantineriver between Suriname and Guyana.
Why is everything indo or chinese. There is a lot of diversity in surinam. You didn't tried the African marron food or even creole food. I know why its obviously because your tour guide is indo.
And please take another tour guide next time. One that speaks proper english. And is willing to take you to other places in surinam. And other types of food.
Good point. Awesome content. But I agree with some of the comments. Next time try all the different foods. The family and I go every summer, so you should roll with us. My mom and sister know practically everybody in Su 😊
Love from indonesia to suriname 😘🇮🇩

You’re supposed to eat the veggies with the peanut sauce. That’s called pitjel
In Indonesia we called it Pecel. I love pecel too, usually I ate pecel with some bakwan (vegetable fritter).
@@Alpukat_ pitjel/pecel is the same smh. Indonesians says soto, but in surinam and holland it's called saoto. Outside indonesia saoto is always with chicken tho.

Hi David,
I’m Jay from London,
I watched almost every video you’ve ever posted and always left you a thumbs up but I’m never commented!
You have so much respect and appreciation for different cultures,
I love it when you eat Indian food it makes me hungry,
You are one of the best UA-camrs out there,
I like it when you eat different types of food but especially the Indian thallis . I can’t believe you have an Indian map tattooed on your arm.
Thanks again for your time and entertainment you are truly appreciated,
Thanks again JAYJAY from London x
Tell him to take you to eat some other types of food - like the peanut soup you had, ask him for pom, pastei, orgeade, cola stroop, her heri. There is much more different food - not just Javanese or Chinese.
I am waiting to see that to
Heel jammer .
The juice was from the fruit ambarella or june plum. In Suriname it is pomme de cythere
I really really love your enthusiasm to try surinamese food and learn things about suriname and it's history.💕

Thank you for coming to Suriname.... Hope you enjoyed your travel and stay in Suriname Hope you will come again ✌
Enjoyed this one too...i love how i learn more and more through you about my country❤🌺

When you pour the peanut sauce onto your veggies, that was basically gado gado.. that's actually one of Indonesia's national dishes. Have u been to indonesia yet bro?

Dear David, I've been following you for a long time now. Long before you came to Suriname. Now my opinion: You're a great travel vlogger, but this time you really should've take a better guide with a versatile view on Suriname. Ususally I watch all your videos, but your videos of Suriname are so one-sided that I skip them. The guide provides u not only wrong information, but also focuses on one part of the community. SURINAME is much more than Africa (You mentioned that in one of your videos based on what the guide showed u).
I will enjoy your other videos, but these ones: It's not what it should be.😉
Albina is wild wild west haha
I think you are exaggerating a bit. You're right...Suriname is much more than Africa. That's why the Javanese and Chinese
influence in the Surinamese cuisine is highlighted in almost every episode that has been shown already. David also mentioned the Indian influence. I suppose that in the coming episodes we will see more of that. Just be patient and enjoy this great journey though Suriname's culture and cuisine but if it's one-sided for you, just spare yourself the effort s to complain, and just skip ( like you said) the Suriname episode.
Btw thank you David for taking us with you on this great journey...and yes I know...your guide is not perfect but like we say in Dutch: De beste stuurlui staan aan wal Literal Translation: “The best helmsmen stand on shore”. Meaning: “The watchers always know 'better' than the doers”.
@@parboguy Exaggerate? Hold on. I mentioned in my comment that I am giving an opinion. I am not attacking your tour operator. So stop defending yourself and the guide. Good luck😉

Very nice to see you move around en the great taste of these foods. Thank you
Love all your videos and watching you eat always make me chuckle..such enjoyment 99% of the time😀
Hi David , I really like the way you recommend all the good foods , from Suriname, .How ever Suriname has a greater and much larger variety of foods. And not only Indian food. I enjoyed watching all your trips to different parts of Suriname .with different cultural background. But my hint to you is that the native Indians/ Amir Indian where the first in Suriname. And second the maroon . And than the Indians from India and than other cultures . I love my country Suriname 🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷
Very nice. it was very nice to see how you enjoy my country. Thanks for the video.
Tamanredjo.
Taman = Garden
Redjo/rejo = Crowded / advanced / festive
We are Indonesian also like fried banana, but as a snack not main dish. Usually we ate fried banana with a cup of cofee or tea on the morning hehe.
This is a Great initiative. Keep it up and thanks for promoting our country and its culture into the outer world 😊👍
Acai/podosiri! A great way to eat it is to mix it with kwak, which is toasted cassava flour. Switi!
The roads, food and the environment is very good in towns and suburbs !!
Waiting for the boat ride.

One suggestion David...someday please make a tour in FIJI and BELARUS....
Trust me you will love these two
These two are underrated touristy country af
New caledonia Madagascar Aruba bonaire Curacao beautiful too bro👍
Small rectification. Nieuw-Amsterdam is the capital of the district Commewijne and Albina is the capital of district Marowijne. Enjoy Suriname!
Yes. The guide was very very nervous. I also tried it. It is very hard for a non vlogger. There are few more errors like Javanese and Japanese...but it is a nice taste of Suriname.
capital in dutch is hoofstad. Nieuw- Amsterdam is hoofdplaats van Commewijne. I repeat HOOFDPLAATS
Soso lobi!
Echt zo negatief man.
In indonesia, we called that spicy chilli by SAMBAL. Flavoured chilli with unique taste.

And javanese from Surinam dont use sambal they use really really hot pepper that will put you in the hospital lol

Hi David,
I like watching all your video's. When will you visit Suriname again?
The veggies you nedd to est with thd peanutsauce, its called pitjel and the sauce is peanut sambal.the hot red pepper is to be eaten with your noodles, you add as much as you can eat.the baka bana is also served with peanut sambal
David you have to come over to Indonesia.. We have many Indonesian foods and beautiful places.. Kanggo sedulur djowo in Suriname.. Salam kabeh mugo diparingi slamet kabeh.. Aku duwe konco neng lelydorp..
It’s fried ripe plantain fritters actually in English 😆 the sauce and the veggies is a fresh salad actually which is always eaten just like you had it
Loved it bro. Brings me back. Keep up with the videos after covid. 😘
The peanut sauce is specifically for the cooked vegetables on your plate, it’s a dish called petjil (pronunciation pea-chill😄 ) but the sauce can be used with everything like bakabana, fried fish, sate, chicken, rice, you name it. So happy I have found this video since I was born there and in my core still feel Surinamese. I am going to binge watch all of your videos and you got a new subscriber 👍🏼👌🏼.
we have pecel in indonesia
Hello David, thank you for a great blog and the scenery is awesome 👏👏👏👏
I enjoyed watching your video...I do not understand why most pple here are critizing the guide..while he did a very good job. Pple tend to be quite overly sensitive and emotional and listening poorly. The guide never said that Albina is the capital of Commewijne! David mentioned it erroneously, because he is still a foreigner. And everything is new to him. So dissing the guide ike that is completely wrong and narrowminded. And making all kind of personal comments about this poor guy. I am glad with this exposure of my country that is unbiased and very objective👏🏽👏🏽👌👌
Hi David, in Indonesia these green beans and been sprouts need to mix with peanut sauce, its so godamddd delicious, and it was called "Pecel" try it when you are comin to Indonesian, we have a lot food treasure. nice vlog, enjoy your day and stay healty!
I really do love your vlogs. Thank you for portraying our country in a positive way. The only thing I wished, is you had a better tour guide. A guide who could speak proper English and could teach you more about our culture and diversity. In terms of food, Suriname has more to offer than Javanese/Indonesian and Chinese food. I wished the tour guide could also introduce you to some authentic creole and marroon cuisine: pom, a wide variety of moksi aleisi, soups (gritbana, peanutsoep, alla kondre soup, afringi, okra soup), kronto aleisi, her'heri, anitriberi, bojo, cassava bread, authentic creole bruine bonen (red kidney beans) with chicken, salted beef and salted pork tail, our delicious rice with vegetables (antroewa, bitawiri, sopropo etc) with heavenly marinated oven chicken and pickled cucumber and red onion aside.
Our delicious cakes/sweets: viadu, abongra kuku, kronto kuku, eksi kuku, keksi and so much more.
100% agreed. Also for the people in the back please. What a very bad tour guide.Really the mis - infomation is not normal!!
javanees have the more different foods dan the others.
@@slykromopawiro5240 it's not necessarily about who has more variation of food than the others or who's the best, it's about the representation of the Surinamese culture as a whole. Suriname is represented by different cultures, but it's clearly that this guide is only introducing him to Javanese and Chinese food, as if only these two groups represent Suriname as a whole. So when this man goes back, he will think that Surinamese food is all about bami, nasi, pitjil, pindasaus etc.
Really love the Suriname vids
So love to Suriname 🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷

The peanut sauce is meant to be for the veggies as a dressing...I think they called it Nasi pecel. So if you go to Indonesia, you need to try Nasi padang, Gudeg Yogya, Sate Madura, Soto Solo...those are just a few famous foods in Indonesia.
