Tying the Stalker Caddis (another caddis dry fly pattern)

- From Eric Leiser's 1987 "Book of Fly Patterns," the Stalker Caddis comes in two versions-- a light sometimes called the Night Stalker Caddis, and a darker, almost black version for the winter caddis you'll see on some eastern waters.
Hook: #12-18 dry fly
Thread: cream
Body: Cream dubbing, any synthetic or natural
Wing: Light or bleached elk hair
Hackle: Cream or white dry fly

Back to my favorite comment about fly tying. UGLY Flies catch Fish! Fishing does not have style points. I love the pattern, sparse flies can often work better. I tied some sparse midges for when the gnats are bothering me, and the bluegill are ignoring everything. I have even caught 3 inch Threadfin Shad on them. Man that’s a great little fly. I’d call it a skill building fly. You use materials that most tiers have and I don’t think you could ever have enough cream colored caddis flies in the box. It looks so good I bet a clown fish would eat it.

Good morning Matt. ☕️ I’ve enjoyed the dry fly videos. This one looks to be a good alternative to the caddis fly pattern I’ve been using. Clown fish…. be a good name for a fly pattern. 😀. Unfortunate that you didn’t get the fishing footage but stuff happens. I’ve been playing with my action cam trying to get a mount that I use with a level of convenience for me. Hope the rest of your week goes well and have a great weekend. Won’t be long and we’ll be back in Arizona. This summer has been a blur.

. Eric’s “The Complete Book Of Fly Tying”is still on my shelf after 50 years.
I love Eric Leiser’s book. Besides having a wealth of patterns & interesting stories, it taught me proper proportions for different fly types. I had the pleasure of meeting him once, & he was a really nice guy. Although I haven’t tied this one, I’m quite sure it will work well. Not a boring fly or presentation, Matt.
I’ll only say this once: Clownfish! -just because I would like a hat or more stickers. ;-)
