About to go on my first turkey hunt. I've been practicing with a slate call and for any beginner this is a great call. It can make so many different calls. Allows you to blend yelps with clucks and get different tones to sound like more than one turkey.

Slate is definitely a great call for beginners, and while its forgiving and versatile for the newbie, its something most veteran callers still carry. Its a must have for the vest in my opinion.

Good luck! You will be really glad you saved the gizzard stones. I didnt start until a handful of years ago and wish like crazy I would have been collecting them longer. I will have to make a video of how I keep my spurs and beards too. There's nothing like Spring Gobbler!

You know, there is a time and place for everything. An acrylic striker can offer an arrow in the quiver on a rainy day with the right striking surface. There are some that don't sound too bad. Most turkey hunters will carry a variety of strikers just for the purpose of versatility and back up.
I have one waterproof striker Im making now, and am making some changes to it. Good to keep it tucked in the vest for sure.

@@callemorcrawlem I lost the original one that came with my pot call so I got a two pack one was wood one plastic and I work them both. I know have found sweet spots for both different tones for sure but as you say there a time and place for everything
