When and How Much Should You Call to a Turkey! Guide to Calling Gobblers in the Spring
I just figured it out, thanks. Two things happened immediately, my wife said "What was that??" from the living room, and all of my dogs are in my office.
That's hilarious! Good luck getting after them
Sounds awesome
Thank you sir!
thats a fat turkey lol
Big Mid Western Cornfed Gobbler
I picked up that exact gun today, and want to run TSS in one barrel and buffered lead in the other, but the internet seems divided on wether tss is a no go for fixed chokes, or that #9 tss is too small to cause bridging or damage. As someone who has actually fired TSS through your fixed choke, have you noticed anything out of the ordinary?
I patterns quite well and have zero issues only that the tight patterns tell on the POA. This gun shoots low and right and with little sight options makes it kinda one of those things that you just have to compensate for. My gun has run the TSS just fine, it does pack a punch though.
@@callemorcrawlemmine shoots low left, I fixed that by putting a beartooth products comb raising kit on it. I needed the 3/8” spacer. Raising the comb not only brought the point of impact up but it also fixed the windage, because I didnt have to scrunch down on the stock funny to get a sight picture.
Awesome bird!
Thanks!
👍
THanks,
Congrats from Illinois!
She was proud for sure!
Real question is, have you ever been lucky enough to find a gem stone in a turkey gizzard? I remember hearing stories of native Americans finding gems in bird gizzards and it being seen as a sign for bountiful hunting for the upcoming year.
I have found some really unique and interesting stones - I don't belive I've got any that are gems. Sadly I only started keeping them about 4 years or so ago. No telling what I threw away.
@@callemorcrawlem thats alright I have faith you will
It’ll be nice if you told us how many ounces of shot
Ill be sure and do that going forward.
Can you afford some turkey targets?
These seem to be okay -
Absolutely!
Thanks!
We all started at the same spot. Your on your way💯
She'd definitely on her way!
Hunt the same way you hunt when the deer ant gobbling 😂 hunt by the sign
Certainly a good approach.
BEEN LOOKING FOR TURKEY CROSSING SIGNS BUT ONLY FINDING DEER CROSSING SIGNS TO HUNT BY!! VERY FRUSTRATING!!!
Well, I got a Tom not a huge Tom second day after that I watched the rest of the Tom’s Jake’s and Hans strut away to another part of the field and have not heard a thing in like almost 2 weeks or not two weeks, but almost 2 weeks, but I hear faint, gobbling way far off into the bush. I guess I probably spook them. We’re hunting out of a blind ground blind wearing all black. They probably seen as walking around maybe but again, yeah
Good Job!
Turkey might not agree🤫,but sounds alright to me💯👍
Until you get in the turkey woods
True - always seems like it sounds different
Great videos! When using the mouth call correctly does the call remain in the roof of your mouth or does it ride on the tongue?
Well - That's a tough one to explain -But the correct location is on the roof of the mouth when the air is actually striking the reed. The tape helps to position it and keep it there.
@@callemorcrawlem Thanks!
Roof of your mouth, use tounge to press up on the reeds, experiment with placement of everything for several weeks, months, or years. Its not gonna happen overnight, its like learning to play an instrument, it takes LOTS OF PRACTICE...... LOTS. Keep it in your truck. Keep it clean and dry. It needs to be washed after every use. Start out with a single or double uncut reed call.
Can you use it ok without a red dot?
Yeah but for the kids I wanted to take the guess work out - I honestly don't even know what it's POA is with the factory bead
How you liking it after a month of turkey season? Is it still holding zero or does bolts get loose over time? Great in depth video! I wanna get one for my nova but I’m alittle scared of thing rotating or something stupid
Do they eventually pass the stones or do thry knowehrn they cant fit anymore inside?
So I'm certainly no expert on the matter but my belief is they will naturally pass them and add to them over their life some may stay longer than others, when you look at the walls of the Gizzard there are pocket like folds that I'm sure they can tuck into and stay pretty much indefinitely
Congrats from illinois!! Got lucky yesterday at 11am😊
Nice work! I squared up on one yesterday as well!
I dont get it😢. Just a little calling and im out of breathe. Im unable to control the volume and make any decent sounds😢
Try to bring the air from the diaphragm - The best way I can describe this is to almost feel as though you are squeezing your core (abs and such) as you exert the breath. Think of it more of a huffing than blowing it.
@callemorcrawlem Goodmorning and Thanks! I'll try that but just to make sure I understand this correctly the air should be between my tongue and the bottom of the Reed with the cut of the Reed up.
@scottlocke3645 my understanding is the air goes over the top of the reed between your tounge and the roof of your mouth.
@kalvinhutchins3704 You're not going to believe this but I decided to try a different mouth call. I was using a ghost call and I switched to a simple double Reed call. Wow what a difference! I'll keep on using it and hopefully get it figured out then I'll try different cuts and see what happens. Maybe the shape of my mouth and air flow works best with the double Reed. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise and experience! Happy Hunting!!
@scottlocke3645 I'm not an expert at all. Struggling to get a mouth call to work for me as well. Also struggling to get my 1st turkey. Tbh, not even sure I'm going to hunt turkey again after this season.
Practice, practice, practice & you'll be able to doo-wit ; )
I like it.
You could definitely get a lot better pattern with tss than that. Federal tss is trash. I would try apex, Rocky Mountain, boss Tom, etc
I agree - honestly never have purchased any 12 GA tss these were given to me some time ago and decided to just to give them a whirl. I have never had good results with 20 or 410 Federals.
Not bad😮
That tank has rocked a few heads in its day!
One question I have is I went Turkey hunting a few weeks ago and there was a group of toms in a meadow. Despite calling them we weren’t getting a response, is that a good time to try and move in on them or should I keep trying to call them every so often for future reference?
So usually if they are non responsive they'll either be tight with hens and you're just not in their bubble - using the terain and not getting busted by all the eyes on the ground will of course give you the advantage but moving in can get you pegged quick. Try and spend time to figure out the bird and how many hens he's hanging with and then you'll be able to know more about why he has no interest in peeling off from where he's at. Usually when they are lonely they'll come see what you have to say even if you're just an average caller. Developing a plan for the bird and what he's been doing is a surefire way to get closer to him each day you hunt him. I will add that hunting a bird 2,3 4.... days in a row obviously will help you nail this down but often times we don't have that luxury
@@callemorcrawlemthanks for the advice, and yes we only had a day and a half to get him!
@@JaymenFroewiss good luck with them!
Congrats on a pretty Bird. Hope to see him in the VPSA contest in Doswell in August. Way to go.
Thanks Larry! I always enjoy comingbto the show every year but surprisingly have never entered anything in there- I will definitely be at the show, but I skinned this fella out and didn't get the weight certified
40 members on 1500 acres? Wow!
Yeah it's rough not all of them will turkey hunt but it gets hit pretty hard
Might have to break my 2024 resolution and buy one 👍🏻
Go for it! It's a nice little rig!
Great video, great production and a moment to treasure forever! Love it! 👍🏻
Thanks- definitely one of my favorites
Thanks for the video! Here n SC hunting National Forest. Lots of hens. Birds r lock jaw I guess the pressure is heavy. I've covered a lot of ground. Without 1 gobble. I've tried the ay nothing thing set for an hour just listening. Still can't get a gobble. I'm a little frustrated but not losing my patience. Going to keep after them 🦃🦃🦃. Good luck in Md. my home state. Maybe ur hunting the ES lots of birds there. Also u and wife get them in 🦃🦃n NJ. Good Luck
They've been quite around here too - good luck and stay after them
You laid out so many gold bars during this video. Massachusetts starts on Monday. I’ve been scouting for the last three weeks. I took a couple days off from work, I’m just over here counting down the seconds until the season starts. lol Thank you for all the information you have been giving us.
Thanks and best of luck to you out there!
Got one these Old Place boxes from Edward! Looks good sound great and it did the trick
They will get an ol gobblers goat right! Good luck this year bud.
Nice job on this.
Thanks! Good Luck this spring!
Good stuff!
Thanks, Good Luck this spring.
Congratulations!!!
Thank you!! Good Luck out there this Spring.
Harold, I sent an order for your calls last week. Could you check on it for me? Thanks!!
Thanks! I will be shipping calls out tomorrow - I will send you tracking to the provided email address!
Oh my gosh man, God bless you and your denture demo! Thank you for being so thorough.
Lol - you are welcome
Not trying to be criticize, I j wanna know why u put the red dot in front of the picatine rail, wouldn’t it be better to put one on there? Or have a shotgun with no rail
No worries - this was a buddies gun; I think he just wanted to keep the sight low as the picatinny raises it up a good bit. There are some custom receiver mounts that remimedy this pretty quick but he had a meadow creek and just wanted to go ahead and get it set up with a dot
Outstanding pattern.
Do you guide?
Negative- I do love getting out there though so if you're ever interested in going get in touch.
@@callemorcrawlem thanks! I would definitely love to do it. My son and I are on our second season down in NC, only really ever deer hunted before so we have got the turkey bug for sure
THANK YOU THIS HELPED ME SO MUCH
Glad it helped! Good luck this season
@@callemorcrawlemThanks you as well!
Congratulations. Im going tomorrow in Georgia. My wife’s family is from Fredericksburg, VA. What part of VA are you in?
I am around Smithfield area - tidewater
dont shoot the titties
#1 is don't go to the truck! Stick with it! He may fire up when hen goes to lay her egg !
That's a great time to get on them for sure
Nice work the red dot mounted on the on the rib does really work good thanks
Right on! They definitely help with tight patterns
How bright was the sight compared to a light back drop. Looking at buying one of these for my Winchester sx4. I hunt a good many food plots and field edges where it’s a clear background. Is the dot bright enough for that?
You won't be disappointed, there are 3-4 brightness settings so you can adjust to your hunting conditions at the time
@@callemorcrawlem thank you
Nice bird 👍🏻 how much he weigh ?
He was 21 lbs 8 oz
🔥🔥🔥🦃🦃💥
Good stuff!
My 301 410 is picky. About 35 yards is my limit. I get my best patterns out of #10s and a .385 trulock. Enjoy your channel. good Luck. 🦃🦃💥
Good info man, I will have to try that combi too!
Appreciate the info
Good luck this season
