    This is what we did to "make the game your own". We took our favorite rules, like Crit/Fumble tables for example. And played our D&D the way we wanted. Homebrew=Mash-Up+House Rules. D&D was meant to be hacked.

    Captain you always deliver.
    When I was a kid, turned 10 in 1981, there was a hobby shop two towns over called Youlden's. It was mostly a craft hobby shop. But in the basement, down the stairs and to the hard left, was a 20x30 section for games and miniatures. Over the years I saw many fascinating things there, Traveler, Dungeons&Dragons, Car Wars, Top Secret, Twilight 2000, GURPS, painted historical soldiers by the dozens, cast fantasy and sci-fi miniatures ready for you to paint, like skeletons with a skeletal Mammoth as a war-mount, dungeon delvers, space adventurers, goblins, kobolds, ghouls...it was magical. Somebody there was very careful to budget for that loss leader but as a kid all I knew was that a trip Mom was making for Yarn and Patterns was one I always volunteered for, back in the days when a kid just took off to roam the store and the parent wasn't arrested for negligence. It lasted until the very late 80s. I think it's a restaurant now. Jeez I miss that, Hell I miss my mom., What I wouldn't give for one more trip with her to that weird store. I don't remember what it smelled like but it had a weird smell too. Probably dope! I'm sure a leftover hippy or three worked there.

      Wow, thanks for sharing that. I was right there with you. I too had a few of those 'nook' game stores ... within a bike ride of my house was the Winship hobby shop. Primarily a 'train' shop, there was also a healthy bit of Napoleonic game miniatures. I also picked up copies of the OD&D supplements that he still had in 1980. The owner's mother was always there.... not doing anything store related, she was just there. He closed up shop not long after she died. I miss that place.

    Great minds think alike. I've been working on my own home brew inspired by many of the same mechanical themes. Item slots, magical mishap rolls instead of spell slots. Stunt/deed rolls for warriors. All spell casters synonimized under magic-users and given one expanded spell list. I liked the specialist(rogue/thief) from Lamentations of the Flame Princess, so I used that d6 skill system. I just find it remarkable to see someone following almost the same path, even with a mix of different materials. I wonder if this style of design or game will get it's own name some day if enough people find it worthwhile to recreate it.

    Ahhhh, the ascending armor class debate. I was pretty much willing to die on the hill of descending AC until the past couple years when I played with more casual players and realized how much faster ascending AC can be in play. We're now mostly playing Castles & Crusades, with a few elements brought in from Hyperborea, AD&D Oriental Adventures and even the fumble and spell failure tables from MERP. It's working out pretty well so far as the Siege Engine is so flexible. I also feel the same way as you about the DCC spell system. I like it in theory, but consulting all those results charts is a bit tedious.

    • @captcorajus
      @captcorajus  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, if you play regularly with groups of 'non-gamers' you quickly discover how much faster ascending AC is in actual play. I can play either way, but ascending AC just works better for the more casual player.
      C&C is great! A top notch, high quality game that mingles the best elements of the OSR and modern gaming.
      I really like all the classes available in Hyperborea. They are great, and the setting is phenomenal.

    Nice review, Captain. I like Dungeon Craft. Whenever a UA-cam channel would review an OSR game and attribute it to DND. I used to get confused. I wondered does that mean Wizards Of The Coast officially supports that game? Then when the OGL thing happened, and I got it explained by one channel and another how Wizards Of The Coast had it set up so third-party game designers were allowed to use their system. Even if it was within reason. Before people started turning away from the OGL. I realized that explains why games were being called DND even if they weren't official DND by brand name.

    Captain, this was a particularly interesting review. I enjoyed hearing how you mixed all three of these games to come up with your own Homebrew. You also asked what we thought of your change to clerics/clerical spells. Well, it seems to fit your game milieu particularly with Hyperborea. However, in general I don’t particularly like it. The cleric has always had a unique, and to my might not fully appreciated roll in RPGs inspired by D&D. Having them remain uniquely tied to a deity or deities keeps them from being just another magic user, and, if played properly, allows a kind of divine accountability for their actions. I also tend to think the way you handle magic really overpowers magic users. I like professor dungeon Masters’ built in penalty for overuse of magic and believe it is not only appropriate but necessary given how he’s expanded the availability of spells in general. Thanks again for a fun video.

    Always great to see how other people are modding their games. Thanks for sharing. No shock that I don't agree with everything that you are going to do but it's not my table. (I will insert a mini rant about the whole "Barbarians don't wear armor" trope. If you've read the Robert Howard stories you know that Conan happily wore whatever armor he could get his hands on and suited the environment/nation he was adventuring in. I blame Arnold for the silly no-armor idea.)

    Love your twists over all great concepts!, ive looked at a few ideas ive got a pretty solid simple system myself, i use magic systems instead of spells but those fit in very well with what you have stated here as well. The idea for clerics and priests is great right along the lines of Conan mythology!. theirs all sorts of Deities that my PCs can work with, serve or make deals and pacts with to gain certain powers, but yes alot of magic in my game is risky and most of it takes time in form of rituals to achieve. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on merging all the classes into two classes, I have the Warrior which combines all the possible concepts of thief's, warriors, bandits and the likes and a Spiritual class for all the magic users. the warrior can still use magic but the spiritual class gets to start off with one magic type and has abilities that will give them an edge.

    I came to the same conclusion to remove clerics in rule light system by reading DCC Lankhmar.
    I really like HYPERBOREA spell list. I especially love the early Summon Daemon.
    I like Barbarian of Lemuria. It's a good and simple way to handle an occupation base leveling system.
    But it's harder to hack the game and fit additional subsystem in it.

Sword & Sorcery tailored to DCC. Also gave me the idea to give each DCC class a set of "Class Skills", not related to Occupation, the Class Skills from D&D 3.5 are what I use. No social skills tho. • @williambennett7935
    @williambennett7935 Рік тому +2

    I agree that having Charlatan Sorcerers masquerade as Clerics is spot on for Grim-dark campaigns, but I disagree that ALL clerics would fall into this category. Even the insane, inscrutable Lovecraftian “deities” will occasionally bestow their “blessings” upon mortals. Having a random d100 Divine Intervention like mechanic for holy prayers would add an uncaring (or too busy?) aspect to calling upon a Grim-dark god for help.
