Brilliant! As a musician/pianist in the US Navy I can’t help but be inspired to practice my discipline every day, as it is both satisfying and difficult, and it is a service to others. Reminds me of Paul Tillich’s concept of “Ultimate Concern.”
Is this basically rejecting current society's goal for more pleasure, and then replacing it with your own goal for more enjoyment(jouissance) in pursuit of some hypothetical pleasure?
Painful but true. I’m struggling to finish my things due to my phone addiction 🥵 but every day I try different ways, and that’s what matters right now.
I've encouraged my young adult daughter to pursue her endeavours in the creative sector. I realised I sold out on my dreams (ironically in IT) . I don't want her ending up messed up like me because of my selling out
At 75 I took up the trumpet. Why? Because my best friend in middle school played trumpet. And only now in this late part of my life do I understand how much I loved that kid. His drive, his desire, his obsession with his instrument made him such a fun person to be with. Actually more than fun, instructive. I saw in him everything I knew I lacked. Where he is now I have no idea. I looked. But at 75 I decided to connect in the only way I knew. Play trumpet. Bought a trumpet, started playing. Just a C major scale is such a pleasure and played with such feeling! I love the trumpet, everything about it, just as I felt for my long ago friend. Middle School feelings are so raw and real. That way. That’s how I feel about the trumpet. So much bittersweet happiness in it. More sweet than the other.
Is there no way, in middle and old age, other to try and rekindle old feelings? Today I saw two teenagers sitting under a tree, the boys head in his girlfriend's lap. I know that there is no greater happiness than what they are likely feeling, and they will remember moments like those the rest of their lives. I can't regain anything like that in any area of my life.
Thank you Julian for making these videos. I have been following your videos for over an year now and it has immensely helped me with grasping concepts related to psychoanalysis and critical theory. Coming from a STEM background and having no training in social sciences, your videos have made me love this field even more. I have been reading and listening to lectures as much as I can and I feel like I cannot do otherwise. Philosophy has also made me reevaluate the kind of work I do and it made me switch my job. Now I work in policy making space where I do data analytics to make better policies. Even tho I think it's a good cause that I work for, a part of me still feels alienated from it, that is I cannot completely make it my own personality (for lack of a better term). If I am to follow Zizek's advice - pick one thing and go to the end, I would love to completely engage myself with philosophy, psychoanalysis, sociology etc but I think my love for these subjects is only because I somehow feel alienated in my day job, or the dissatisfaction I get from my day job is what pushes me to read these things. I am afraid that if I give up my day job and completely devote myself to philosophy, I will end up not liking it? or that it wont bring me the level of satisfaction that I expect it to bring. It is very similar to what Zizek said- how a man thinks that if his wife were to disappear then he could live his life happily with his mistress but it is only because of the dissatisfaction the wife causes him that he enjoys his time with his mistress lol. Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

When the Soviet Union collapsed, some lamented the end of good lit paradoxically.
I dont get the narrative about the old man reading. His demise is not the result of his failure to create meaning in his life that benefits others, but it is simply due to a misunderstanding. what if my "symptom" is abusing drugs, living promiscuously, and participating in organised crime? the thing about the modern world is that we have so much padding around us in every way possible we have nothing to do that would serve others, inspire passion and be productive.
Yeah this system basically distinguishes degeneracy and desire by whether or not it can be integrated into society. I think the second point you made is the most important. Hyper abundance and alienation make it so that symptoms can't be sublimated into society. If no one needs me in particular how can I be anything other than a degenerate?

True and thats probably why we need to understand that we don't need to enjoy all the time. We feel a duty to enjoy, be "happy" all the time, when in reality there is no such requirement of that and more often than not we need to get rid of this desire of chasing after happiness and enjoyment as the end goal.
