Video V.34
A little project restoring a Hornby Railroad Range class 08 shunter that was doomed for scrap as too for the real one.
I took it upon myself to strip everything down from the budget model and remake this into something to be cherished by creating a loco diorama based on a historical event that turned up at the old oak common depot in 1989. Albeit a little crushed in the cab area from an incident.
This was a six day project that gave me a great opportunity to have a small break from building on the layout and continue with other things.all the engine parts where stripped from a 1/43 scale model car and cut up into many small pieces by carefully studying an 08 diesel engine to re-create the real look.
Please note the crank rods are upside down as this came with the model at the time and have since correct this issue.

Very nice, indeed, Garry! It's always fun to take something that's 'trash' to most people and find a good purpose for it, isn't it? One of my favorite aspects of the hobby is taking cheap 'train set' quality rolling stock and refurbishing it into something quite nice and usable.
Totally agree to what you’ve highlighted- I certainly love taking cheap wagons and turning them in to eye catching stock and the same for loco’s
I think it’s a self reward but it truly inspires me to push myself further
Thanks again
All the best Garry
Thank you for the way you have explained this. Now I have more ideas of what to do around the layout. Cheers
Hi Andrew, somethings we forget simple dioramas of every day life that suits or hobby, and this is the beauty of all sharing ideas.. your very welcome my friend..
Take care and all the best Garry
Fantastic use of an old model, you e inspired me to do the same to an 08 I have from my childhood in the 70’s to use it for something on a dcc layout
Kevin, its all about sharing ideas to bring other peoples passions to life... its relatively easy to do and a lot of fun.. all the best Garry
cheekytek thanks Garry, I’ve been following your channel for a few months now, and it’s really interesting, I’m in the progress of starting to build baseboards for my planned loft layout so watching what you have done and Dean Park Station is really cool for getting ideas etc, thank you
Great bit of modeling Gary engine looks very convincing Good way of re cycling old loco's thanks for sharing ... Pete
Thanks Pete.. 👍
Hey cheekytek
2 big wow's
1) the day after I'm thinking of doing a project like this, your video pops up on my suggested list
2) the loco look's stunning, the extra details that you've added really bring her to life. Even if she is dead!
Thanks for the upload
Olly
Oliver, its a simple conversion the engine was the easiest build, had a lot of fun on this and modelling anything like this can be so different in so many ways happy to share and many thanks for watching..
all the best Garry
Any other projects like this on the go?
Olly
Not at the moment as doing layout update video but have some projects on the way 👍
Cheers Garry
Ooo I look forward to seeing it
Olly
Super bit of work! Hats off to you! Cheers for sharing, an inspirational idea for my own layout.
Sharing the inspiration is what it’s all about... and a lot of fun.. lol
Many Thanks again Garry
absolutely love what you've done with this class 08, good job lad
Many Thanks
Very appreciated 👍
Amazing transformation! You are really good at these scratch building projects! Superb. Cheers Jerry
oh Jerry, your just to kind.. lol. I was just to tight to throw it away.. lol
cheers buddy
Really effective, Gary. Nice job!
Many Thanks... it was a good excuse to site with the wife for a week.. brownie points.. lol
Ive got loads of old car model bits thats very clever garry cheers.
Brian, certainly an easy solution to building an engine 👍
Stunning result Garry. Very impressed. Paul
Thanks Paul, just some sharing inspiration..
Cheers again..
Fantastic job, really looks the part! May I ask why you prefer enamel paint to acrylic for spraying?
Regards
Richard
A good question, i love using acrylics easier to mix and cleaner to finish up.. enamels do tend to give a heavier paint surface than acrylics... but this all came down to having a couple pots of enamel BR Blue & the warning yellow..to use up first..
i'm to tight to buy more paint just for ease of use.. lol
cheers Rich
Nice little scratchbuilding/ kit-bashing project. It turned out really well.
thanks Dominic, didn't turn out too bad, but certainly a fun project..
thanks again.. Garry
Well done Garry the 08 looks brilliant!
Michael
Very nice work Garry. I bought a dead shunter and resin engine last year to do the same thing, but never got around to doing it...Simon
Many Thanks Simon, to be honest i put this off a couple times but being so blooming cold down in the shed, it gave me a warm week of fun,.
keep up enjoying doing what your doing were all watchers of your videos.. 👍😉
all the best Garry
Nice one Garry. I have a similar project on the go but a slightly larger engine. Using the fret from etched details works well for scale framing of the body. Great job as always mate. Mark
Cheers Mark, yours sounds very intriguing - that will be a video to watch out for.. 😃👍
thanks mate..
Absolutely fabulous Garry. Looks Superb! Susannah
Thanks Susannah, just a little fun project.. 😉
Hi cheekytek what a fantastic idea instead of binning it looks really great well done. Cheers George
Thanks George, it originally went in the bin 3 times lol... then I had a brain fart to restore it..
Nice job there Gary , she looks good in the raw as we might say , big improvement ... Dave
Thanks Dave, the addition adds a different look to the layout.. and a fun project to do..
all the best my friend Garry..
Hi Gary, really enjoyed you video. A very stunning job. Cheers Greg
Cheers Greg. 😉
Nice little project Gary. making use of a none working loco, and turning it into a cameo scene. great stuff...cheer's Tony
Thanks Tony, you know me i'm to tight to throw things away.. lol certainly looks the part than what is was originally..
cheers again buddy..
see you tomorrow........Tony
Yeah we will be there, see you tomorrow 👍😉
It's ok thanks for telling me about how the project came to mind.
Top job, really got me thinking, Tezza
Glad its sending out the revamp vibes.. lol mission accomplished
Nice job... your wasp strips look they came from a bumble bee though!
Thanks Gary
Unfortunately yeah they do but being my first ever restoration maybe a revisit is due now I’ve got a bit more confidence to correct slightly 😁
Cheers again 👍
Hehehe... that's fine good buddy. I like your idea... I also have some crappy old locos which could be modified. A great solution and interesting concept... I'll give it a go. Thanks again.
Hi Garry, great work as usual. Around the11 minute mark I can see your loco shed lights pulsing. Would you mind if I used that part in a forthcoming “camera settings” video? Regards Charlie?
Hi Charlie
That was my annoyance lol and something next on the list to swap out due to the format I record, 4K does overcome the flicker as to the 60 HD I normally shoot in..
Yes buddy happy for you to use this no problem at all 👍
Think it’s a great idea
Thanks for asking 😉👍
Garry
The answer is either 50 fps or 25 fps. Both should stop the flickering. Thanks for the permission to download.Regards Charlie
Looks amazing
Hornby really cocked up making this loco, it's far from an accurate representation of an 08. However, what you have created from it is truly amazing. You have brought it to life. It's just a shame that hornby didn't give it proper side frames and I can't help but notice the side rods are on upside down, still, what you've done is awesome.
Many Thanks yeah it wasn’t the best 08 produced but looking at how Hornby have developed in today’s standards then this learning process probably gave them the inspiration to create better detailed loco’s of today through this progression.
And they have some pretty awesome detailing nowadays
Yeah the rods we’re upside down and this was from new, again going back to errors of this model at its time.
I had mentioned this in one of the videos that shows an update..
Thanks and all the best Garry
That’s really good! First class work.
Many Thanks, should get some new shots of this in the new layout update.. 😉
Cheers again Garry
cheekytek looking forward to seeing them!
Loved the video Gary as always :). A bit of model railway upcycling!
Thanks Ian, it’s like turning a nodding donkey into a stallion lol 😂
Cheers buddy 👍
G'day Garry..... really good work, what an excellent result
Great job there ! bet was cold in shed !
you know how chilly my den gets, maybe my neighbours will have a roaring fire to melt the snow.. lol
hope your feeling better bud.. take care and speak soon.. G
Very good Gary. Keep up the good work!
Many Thanks buddy
A Very welcoming comment.
Cheers 👍
I like how the old class 08 bodies look like class 11's, but the chassis always look so bad. And there isn't really an excuse for saying "The hobby wasn't as sophisticated back then," just take a look at the Lima models. I read recently on RMweb something about a guy putting a Hornby Railroad body on a Lima chassis and it looked great. I believe it was called "Detailing a Railroad class 08" or something. Definitely worth the read.
Hi Will, Many thanks yeah- I saw that vid, very inspirational. Absolutely right there budd -chassis was never pretty lol. But I think Hornby had the balance right when comes to modelling then and I dont know if this was their vision going forward, but I guess it was more about reliable running back then, hence the bulky chassis. But I think what is great is having a budget model allowing us modelers to modify to our hearts content with upgrades.
Thanks again and all the best buddy
Garry
@@cheekytek Sure! Even though I think they're ugly, I still have a place in my heart for the old Tri-ang/ Hornby ones.
Brilliant work Garry. Looks the part and all for pennies and from an engine that was destined for the bin. Justifies the hoarding of rubbish (I mean useful parts, damned auto correct!) too.
davie, lol we're all secret hoarders, except my wife who keeps more crap than me... lol
I just slowly loose her treasures in the bin... 😂😂😂
what a fantastic project! Are the wheels in upside down though? :P
Cheers..
no we found out the connecting rods were upside down from factory end, a rate blooper from Hornby, I found out that there were a couple models from the release date that had the same.
Very strange.
As featured in a recent update this has been corrected.
Good thought. Tho 👍
Cheers Garry
It's nice to know that sometimes the manufacturers get it wrong too :P
Well done gazza looks great spot on m8 love it best thing to do with that hornby 08 Dave at TINSLEY Tmd and yard model
Nice job on the 08 Gary , as said looks like something befitting your layout .. Dave
superb job, I wish I was that handy.
Thanks 👍
😉
Really nice job on the shunter , looks great .......Peter
Thanks Peter, 👍 not that i needed another shunter lol
Great idea
Thanks Malcolm a great way to repurpose a useless loco
And now the star of the layout 👍
👌sweet ....I do like refurbs....I think you do really good comprehensive vids ...nice modelling Gary ....regards Fred ....Basingstoke? 10.00 on Saturday 10th ...Weather permitting.
Fred it will be sunny ☀️ I’ve booked the weather.. fingers crossed 🤞 looking forward to Basingstoke if all fails we will keep in touch to meet..
thanks for the amazing comments as always, this was a fun project and turned out a great refurb.
Keep warm buddy 😉
Connejcting rods are fitted upside down, oilers facing down. Other than that a good thouglht provoking job. Well done. Chris Wills.
Well Chris that was from the Hornby Factory as never have removed them ..lol
probably why it was a terrible runner lol.. thanks for spotting ...
Cheers Garry
Wondering if anyone else noticed that. Afaik the rods are easy to remove - one screw in the centre axle only. The outer axles just have unsecured pins in the rods that fit into holes in the wheels. The rods would then have to swapped to the opposite side of the loco.
railtrolley
Many thanks for your advise..
If you watch my Q&A video you can see that these have been rectified.. and an update on the shunter..
All the best Garry
cheekytek cool. Will do. I model vic rail australia. They used these class O8 shunters. They were called F class. A few have been preserved. Roco models make them in VR livery. HO scale as that is the scale used for modelling Vic Rail.
railtrolley
It’s funny as these quite a few shunters like the 08 in service around the globe shows what a great design it was..
Thanks again for the info will look them up 😉👍
I have the same Bachmann class 08 as you! mine is 08 818.
Enjoyed the film, like your channel, subbed! Thank you from Germany.
Nice Job!
Thanks Melanie
Very appreciated comment. And a lot of enjoyment building this one.
Thanks again Garry
How very cleaver, looks great
Many thanks my friend.
All the best Garry
Great project Garry - have you any plans to hide the incorrect inside frames & wheels, when you put it on the layout? Perhaps some of the side panels or doors, could be rested up against it?
Hi Ian that has been a conversation between Myself and Dave at Tinsley, Was looking at a old Lima under-frames but I think I will scratch build something to fit under as it dose detract the eye slightly. panels may be a fix - good thought 👍
Fantastic job
Holybrooke junction Rob Class 37
Many Thanks 😉
Excellent...
Many Thanks Nick, certainly a fun project. 👍
I'm also building a similar maintenance shed to yours but in N, hope you don't mind but I'm borrowing your solution to lighting using the brass tubing and soldered leds across. Perfect
Build away my friend this what sharing is all about.. I’ve had a lot of enquiries on the shed doors so will mention in next video.. the brass 1mm rods carry the lighting with ease and a great fix 👍
Nice job
Nice job re-purposing :)
Thanks..
Neat bit of re-purposing there. If you get another one you could convert it into a Class 13 shunter slave just like Dave (emoh8765) over at Tinsley TMD did.
Anyhoo keep up the good work. Kev
Hi Kev, many thanks..
it did cross my mind but the class 13 slave shunter that Dave has.. was used mainly in Tinsley, my layout being themed around old oak common so these were rarely seen around London... and would not be actuate for my diorama..
To convert an 08 like that it’s a case of lifting the cab body out that unclips.. then some added detail 😉
Cheers for the idea though..
Garry
The coupling rods are upside-down!! The bearing oil reservoirs go on the top, not the bottom.
The "wobbly axle" was Hornby's SSP gimmick that was supposed to improve hauling power of the 0-6-0 loco chassis by increasing down force on the driving wheels. Following the loss of the magnethesion 0-6-0 chassis and steel track, Hornby locos just didn't (and still don't!!) have that same hauling power of the magnethesion equipped locos.
Hi Andy Many Thanks for your comments
This video will provide you the answers to the shunter rods 😉
ua-cam.com/video/wob7E3z9w-o/v-deo.html
The newer Hornby loco’s certainly have come a long way with the same motor arrangements as bachmann and do perform better than the old system
Progress in the making from the old 😉👍
Many Thanks Garry
Just noticed that the conneting rods are up side down
Hi David thanks for your comment - this was explained in the following video @ 11 mins in
ua-cam.com/video/wob7E3z9w-o/v-deo.html
Cheers 👍
How do you take the bodywork off?
On these older models there’s a screw at the radiator end then the there is a lug located on a tray retainer at the rear that keeps the body attached.
Unscrew front - gently lift front - slide body up and back to release rear clip ..
Hope this helps 👍
@@cheekytek Thanks, i needed to clean my 08! 👍
Great
Many thanks 👍
Still lovey
Looked like a Sulzer 12LDA28 the first engine that was to big , be beast of a shunter with that in 2500 hp don't think T/ motors last long
Lol yeah it was - someone asked about resin castings on ebay so these at the time were available - would love to see a shunter 08 with a Sulzer 12LDA28 engine lol
A whole new meaning to a Custom build 😂😂
Take care buddy
Cheers Garry
U dun a gud job there
Many Thanks Matthew. Didn’t turn out too bad 😉
👍
Should have kept the motor but detailed it is
Thanks buddy
The motor was shot and being old Hornby railroad range the whole loco had to be reworked to fall in line with scale.
This was a loco deemed for the bin so just a fun project
Thanks again 😉
Hi Gary, great idea and a nice conversion. If you use a lot of plasticard try thes people
www.stationroadbaseboards.co.uk/cart_plastic.htm
1mm plasticard is £1 a sheet, Slightly larger that Slaters but nearly 1/3 the price. I use this source exclusively now and it is excellent quality and available in more thicknesses than you can theow a stick at. They are also on Ebay where they sell mixed packs and seconds but I now go direct. It is so cheap that I now use it instead of card. ........................John
wow that is perfect advise John thank you so much for sharing, love plastic card so versatile for our hobby. will look deeper in to the offcuts.
I had a lot of fun with this being horrible from exiting the box when it was new.. but now it lives on lol..
Cheers again Garry
