  • In this first part of two videos looking at Tamiya's 37 year old kit we look at the plastic kit as a base for modelling the Prince Of Wales. In Part two we will look at aftermarket products to lift the kit.

    Hi Jason, another great video. It's fun to take a look at an older kit like this and compare it to what can be done today with molding technology. Of course like you say, just because the technology has advanced, doesn't mean that Tamiya is going to incorporate it into their newer kits. That bomber looks terrible, even by 1986 standards. I'm looking forward to seeing what aftermarket goodies you have for this kit. Thanks for sharing.

    Interesting to see how the "ability to provide detail" has changed over the years...not to mention how sometimes new capabilities are "implemented", yet sometimes they are not. Also interesting how the Tamiya ships of the 70s and 80s were what seemed state of the art then...and we consider them to be klunky compared to modern ship kits. I guess adding details is (and will probably always) be the biggest challenge for model kit companies that are doing ships. I've only tried 1 Flyhawk kit (1/700)...and like 1/72 aircraft I'm moving away from 1/700 ships.

      I think ship detail is always less well done than an aircraft or AFV, I guess because of the high tooling cost to start with with.

    Great first impression video as always Jason. I actually have this kit, I haven't looked at it in a while but, I believe mine has some pe that came with it, I'm not quite sure. I'll have to dig it out and have a look at it. It looks like a nice kit to build, and I'm assuming the parts should go together quite well being that it is a Tamiya kit. I may be mistaken about the pe though, I'll need to have a look at it. I'll be interested in seeing her being built. I'm looking forward to seeing part 2. Have a great day, see you next time.

      Hi, Tamiya never have put etch in to my knowledge, in the 80’# you would have git plastic railings for the main deck

      @@ModelkitStuff yup, I just went and dug it out of my stash, I was mistaken the two Trumpeter kits that I have do have the photo etch. They were the ones I was thinking about I do believe there is a lot of aftermarket stuff still out there for the P. of W. I think Eduard has a bunch, at least they did when I was looking into pe for all four of my big ships, ( Hood, Prinz Eugen and the Bismarck), I found some for all but one. Couldn't find a whole lot for the 1/350 Bismarck though. I was rather surprised and disappointed. Nevertheless I'm looking forward to part 2 of your P. of W. first impression video.

    I bought and made this exact kit almost a year ago. It was pretty good although I found a few small issues with getting the deck parts to fit the hull. I also used the aftermarket photoetch for cranes, boats and railings and found the 2lb'er pompoms quite tricky to get right, but again there were very few problems other than my limited abilities.

    Another slightly smaller option is the 1/400 Heller which is about the same vintage. The Heller hull is much more accurate and better detailed. If you're lucky you can get one for half the price of the 1/350 Prince of Wales you have here.

    I've Just bought the Tamiya KG V and the Eduard railings etch sheet. I haven't decided yet, but will probably up detail with some 3D printed parts (sights/radars and pom-poms at least).

    I'd recommend searching out the recent Drachinefell video, where he discusses the class with a KGV class specialist, which goes into a lot of detail regarding the design parameters (Sorry Jason)

    Could you help me out as far as what holes to drill out from the drill hole markings on the bottom of the deck? And, what are the "K" arrow markings on the underside of the deck....what does the K mean? I can see the holes marked "P" to be drilled but I have not been able to figure out why they have to be drilled out. I have the Pontos photoetch kit and the deck and I really don't want to drill out the wrong holes thanks Brian

    • @ModelkitStuff
      @ModelkitStuff  9 місяців тому +1

      Hi Brian, the deck is also used on the King George V so the K holes are for that build. If memory serves the holes are for gun tubs but you will probably have resin ones from points. The Pontos deck should have the holes in it also where it needs them so I would put wood deck next to your plastic deck compare the two and only drill out what Pontos have as holes. hope that helps

    Very thorough review. I've had my sights on a Tamiya King George V for a while. From your experience, are there any major differences between Prince of Wales and King George V kits? Not sure if Eduard PE sets can add the missing details. Sensible retail price for Tamiya quality though. The three piece deck is what worries me. Keep up the good work!

    • @ModelkitStuff
      @ModelkitStuff  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, there is little difference between the KGV and POW kits. the Eduard etch is discontinued for both now so you tend to find it on eBay etc. White ensign Models do etch for KGV which would be a good set or if your money stretches to it you can get a Pontos set, which I have so I know it will give you a deck overlay to cover the 2 deck joins as well as new masts and barrels. you can see the Eduard etch for POW tomorrow

    • @giorgoschrysochoos8874
      @giorgoschrysochoos8874 2 роки тому

      @@ModelkitStuff Thanks for your quick reply! At the moment both White Ensign and Pontos sets are out of reach for one reason or another. What I'm planning is to use two separate Eduard PE sets for KGV. Namely the 'cranes and railings' as well as their 'generic' KGV sets. They're available from Eduard's website. I'm guessing you've got the discontinued 'Big ED' set to work with. As for the deck, I'm thinking of a wooden overlay to solve Tamiya's three piece deck issue. Any recommendation would be much appreciated. A KGV would be a nice change from my usual Cold War/Modern ship builds. Looking forward to your Eduard PE video tomorrow!

    She's not still capsized at the bottom of the ocean - she's been scavenged by metal resellers.
