you scored those K hats for $50? Holy hell dude nice find!
Hey Man... you are a great Drummer... Sounds very funky an clean! I love it!
Brett, that was great ! You are a great drummer too. Thanks so much for all this info. I am thinking about putting one together. I played drums in church for 17 + years and have sold them but for home I would love to have something small like this. I like that you don't have any cymbals to get in the way of keeping the space small. It all work juts fine.
Thanks for your kind words Eric! I appreciate it very much. Cool to hear a little of your experience on the drums as well. I play in church too. 17+ years is a great record! I'm excited you're looking at putting one of these together. When you finish your suitcase kit, I'd love to see a video!
Thanks so much, Brett ! Yes, I also have a band-small but a band nonetheless. Thanks so much for your input! I will let you know. Cool that you play in church too !!!!
+Brett VanOstenbridge yes thank you for the heads up about AHEAD, definitely will have to check it out. Yeah my snare is a 14" so I might have to pick up a small first act snare from a kids drum just upgrade it. If not the pearl piccolo. :)
sick videO!
whale Thanks dude! I appreciate hearing from you! Post back here if you try it out.
Nice vid... Thanks for sharing...
Nice of you to take the time time to say so, man! Thanks very much!
I'm envisioning adding a yamaha electric table top drum and a few random shakers and bells for a dandy little diy kit just for after dinner jams.
After dinner jams sounds great man. Haha. I actually wound up cracking my suitcase where the beater strikes, so I would recommend using a soft beater or reinforcing the playing surface. I wonder if an aquarian kick pad would work...
Gooooood !
Striking tools.... Legendary
Can the snare and other parts fit in the suitcase? I'd like. That for a quick travel jam at the park or jazz venue
+Chris Santana I think your best bet is probably to carry the hardware and hats in the suitcase and the snare in a separate soft case. AHEAD makes cases in a lot of sizes and you don't have to buy a whole set. It's possible that everything could fit if the hardware is small enough, but my hardware is much to large for me to do that. My best tip is get some light, collapsible, single-braced hardware like the DW 6000 series. And of course make sure your snare is small as possible. I hope that answers your questions. Is there anything else that you want to know?
Can you travel with these on public transportation?
Genialidad,,,,,,
$50 for those hats is unheard of
I'll built mine outta the same Samsonite! Even the same color.
Matthew James Nice! What beater are you using on it?
Brett VanOstenbridge A DW 5000... I've actually been meaning to make a video for my kit as well :D
wow - that's the most utility small kick drum i'm aware of!how did you attach the kick pedal before you had the plate installed?
Hi! Apologies for the delayed response. The comment system was blocking my replies for a little while. Anyway, before the plate was installed, I filled the suitcase with several pounds of metal and just set up the pedal in front of the suitcase. It's even easier to do that if you have a plate-mounted pedal like the pearl eliminator, dw 5000, or iron cobra. If your pedal doesn't have a floor plate, the it would help to attach the clamp (the part that normally attaches to the bass drum) to anything flat, thin, and somewhat strong. Then place your weighted suitcase on top of it and you'll get more stability. Thanks!
Great video. With the bars you had installed on the bottom of your suitcase, can you still open it? Or is it assumed to be permanently closed?
@Ringoshiiro Thanks man! Actually, it can be opened a bit. Wide enough at least to get the snare in and out. When I want to go places with just the case (and everything fitting inside) I swap the hats and hi hat stand for an 18" crash and a small cymbal stand. I leave the throne at home at play it standing.
Ringoshiiro Also the bars are fastened with bolts and are easy to remove with a screwdriver.
I mean we kinda went completely off the grid here with trying to fit the gear into the case to make it nice and portable.. and I have $450 in samsonites from the 1940s-1960s.. not killing these ill go find plastic crap ones and not ruin my matching sets
is a plastic suitcase better then a old leather suitcase?
+Viktor Vyncke I would definitely say plastic is better if the leather isn't reinforced in any way. If the leather is just wrapping around a sturdy box-style construction, then it might work if you like the sound, but it will probably get a hole where your beater strikes. In any case, if you find a sturdy, durable suitcase then all that's left is to sound test it with a few good thumps.
are you playing a beat from a beck song at around 6 mins?
Hey, Paul. Actually I have scarcely ever listening to Beck, so no it's just coincidence. I'd be interested to listen to the song if you can think of the title!
the song you're referring to is Cellphone's Dead by Beck, which is a tribute to Herbie Hancock's Chameleon...kinda similar to this drum beat :)
That's it!
this is great, my only problem is I thought the point of a suitcase drum set is that you can put stuff in the suitcase. you screwed it
what size suitcase are you using?
Approximately 19" high, 24" wide and 8" deep. I recently developed a crack on the area where the beater strikes. At this point I'd recommend reinforcing that area with something like the Aquarian kick pad. And not the thin version. Can I answer anything else for you?
You could have just bolted a door hinge on one side.
hello! Snare and hi hat specs please?
magikarpp Hi! The hats are regular old 14" Zildjian K series top and bottom. The snare is a 13" brass pearl piccolo. Is that the info you were looking for?
Yes! Thank you very much
