Did this mod with his cables in the spring and it’s been hot as hell and humid in New England a few weeks now, and the peace of mind is so worth it, James is a stand up guy for doing this….thankyou my friend. Been over 2k miles and riding the hell out of it with no worries.

Nice one, Dave. That’s excellent to know! No issues whatsoever on my own bike and I’m sure the `gremlin bell’ is helping! 😀

Hi James, I must of had mine on for around 7 months now with no issues. As you mention clean air cooling reg/rec, free from road crud chain lube etc. For me its about having confidence in bike expecially when touring. Your modifications on other components such as switch gear are absolutely spot on really happy with bike now👍

I was just about to fit the Royal Enfield skid plate to my bike and I think that this would make the standard position of the unit even worse as there would be even less air flow to it. Would be interesting to know how many people had that fitted?

Good point. Airflow is absolutely essential on an air-cooled electrical component that actually has cooling fins! I put my email address in my video descriptions and receive emails all the time about fried RR’s. Appalling really. Replacement RR’s are all over eBay and I’m positive there is a reason for this. Call me old-school but people simply;ly shouldn’t have to pack a spare RR in their luggage before embarking on a tour.

Hi Lee, I have done this mod mounted under the oil cooler with a Tec sump guard. My post is above. :)

Interestingly I've had my 2020 interceptor since new and have put 30,000 km or so on it and have not had any issues, despite living in a part of Australia that gets really hot in summer. I wonder if its certain year models or between certain build dates where it mainly occurs that could have been due to defective batches of RRs. I know certain build date ranges have defective oil temp sensors, mine included.
Touch wood though, it'll probably die on my next ride 😄

I’m not sure it’s a ‘bad batch’ tbh. It’s across all years and mileages. Some people get lucky (eg you…lol) but many get very unlucky indeed

Just a thought. Would there be any advantage in putting spacers between the relocated R/R and the yoke, to allow airflow over as well as under the R/R?

I did think about that and it’s certainly possible, the cooling fins are on one side only though and the back of the RR is a kind of black bitumen-type substance. But, yes, it could make a slight difference but I suspect not a great deal, tbh…..

    Hi James,
Great idea to do this mod & a truly altruistic effort to make it feasible for other owners to try it too! We do owe you a debt of gratitude for your efforts. I mounted it beneath the oil cooler similar to Philip's & David's approach, but with the wires pointing downwards instead of upwards toward the head stock. I ran the two extended leads along the lower right frame loop. Neatly out of sight behind the Tec sump guard I have fitted. There is a small loop of the extension cables safely cable tied to the unused carbon filter tray behind the gearbox. There was a moment or two of concern when it wouldn't turn the starter motor. Then I remembered I had put it in first gear when I put it on my ramp! :00
Into neutral & she fired straight up without issue. :)

Wouldn't just cleaning this regularly solve part of the problem. If it's regularly cleaned from grease and grime build up, it shouldn't over heat then and should work fine? No need for relocation then........just a thought

@@chriswatts6161 it’s still attached to the back of a hot engine and any airflow around the RR is passing by the hot engine first so not ideal for cooling the RR. Also, it’s often sandwiched between the engine and the Evap cartridge. It’s not simply grease and grime build up although that further exacerbates the problem. The problem is that the OEM location doesn’t facilitate cooling which is why they fry all the time.

I lost 3 in 3 years and Royal Enfield won't fix it. Hence the need to change the location and hope it fixes the issue.

I think you will find re-locating cures the problem
