I just discovered the Great Brazilian singer/musician/producer ED MOTTA, his brilliant music, and his library of incredible bass lines!
I'll break down, arguably, his MOST famous bass line ("Marta" aka "Smile" from his 2013 release, AOR), show you how it's played, show you who played it (Mr. Groove), explain why it's so popular in Brazil, and explain how Ed himself comes up with most of the bass lines on his records.
It's part Jazz, part Bossa Nova, part R&B, part Funk, even part Yacht Rock and it's incredible. Check it out.

Honored to be mentioned in this video! Ed Motta was an encouraging grab of my art at the beginning of my career and Robinho Tavares is a great master and brother that I have the joy of having in my records ✨ thank you!
I went to your channel and YES, I love your voice and your music! What a fine discovery. All the best for your career! Cheers! //Rick

He's not the funkiest but he's up there.. Brazil is full of talent. And look at you.. over 100k subs.. congrats
And now I’m a subscriber of you too🪩🪩🪩
For those who don't know, he is the nephew of legendary soulman Tim Maia. Tim's songs are full of groove
Tim Maia é bom demais!!!!
Tim Maia is the best!!! You should listen as well!
100% when you get to tim maia, its next level...

Brazilian music is full of groove, if you wanna listen to the main Brazilian artists that influenced Ed Motta, check out Tim Maia (who was his uncle btw), Jorge Ben Jor, Cassiano, Marcos Valle, Djavan, Sandra de Sá and Azymuth
Love Azymuth!
Love Djavan!

Thanks for the artist tip Tim Maia. So rich...
Check 'Black Rio' as well.
A funny fact: Ed Motta sang the beautiful Phil Collins songs from Disney's Tarzan in portuguese.
He is pretty famous in Brazil, but his songs are more appreciated in Europe. Funny Fact is that he owns a collection of more than 10 thousands of LP discs at his home. This man breathes music.
I'm brazilian and heard his sound all my life. By the way his uncle Tim Maia was also a genius, I recommend the album "Manual Prático Para Festas, Bailes E Afins" I think it was his second album and he plays all instruments. It's hypnotic and a party on itself. Cheers Mate
Funny. We love this album, but Ed Motta don't kkkk He think it were a mistake, at least in his own words.
Tim Maia es palabras mayores, gigante.
Tim Maia was a genious. Ed Motta is a relatively good musician, but that's it. He lacks that spark and ingenuity. And he knows it, he's butthurt about it and that made him an unbearable douche. Too bad.

@@vashokur right. He’s not a genius. And i listened to him alot too but his rhythms and melodies on all his albums repeat and sound a little dated. But it’s not something you notice until multiple times hearing his music.
At this point, i think that having "Brazil" in the title is just a way of instantly summoning a big crowd of viewers
Ed Motta is an undervalued genius
Fun Fact:
This album (Ed Motta - AOR) has two versions: one with portuguese lyrics and another with english lyrics. When he's on tour, he sings those songs according to the audience. 🙂

I was looking for this comment
Ed Motta has a record collection that is world wide known.
Saw him in Stockholm at the jazz club Fasching about ten years ago.. Man, he played the shit out of the rhodes. A pure monster!
And he’s a funny guy as well. He’s talk between the songs was something else than the mainstream bs.
Furthermore, I think he’s uncle is Tim Maia, the giant artist from Brazil who sadly died at the age of 55.
Shoutout to Fasching, experienced some of the best music of my life there - a wonderful place!

Was there myself, GREAT Gig, had listened to Ed for many years as I used to live in Brazil. Ed is one of the most humble musicians to be on stage
@@nilswiklund2406 a great man in every way 👍
It's worth remembering that Ed Motta is the nephew of Tim Maia, the godfather of Soul in Brazil. All of his musical references were taught by his uncle.
I am a house music DJ and sometimes I start my sets with Ed Mota - Daqui pro Méier. One can even make the argument that it's a House Music track too.
I'm European, discovered Ed Motta in 2004 in Brazil while grabbing some cd's in a shop, still today I don't get tired listening him and have almost all his music. I would have loved to see him performing with Al Jarreau, I consider him as the Brazilian Al Jarreau. Would also be great him to perform with my favorite funky musician, the great Nile Rodgers.
Greetings from a Texan living in Portugal...I got tuned into Mr. Motta from a friends Brazilian wife in Florida...Every time I visited there home she was jamming his stuff till finally one day she loaned me the CD...Manual Prático Para Festas Bailes e Afins, Vol. 1...simply one of the best sounding albums I have ever heard...Almost did not give the CD back...Bênçãos e Energia Positiva! 🇺🇲🇧🇷🇵🇹🎸🥁🎤🤘🤟🤠
Lo que hace Ed Motta es epico. Jazz, funky, bosanova, samba. Todo junto te vuela la cabeza. Y lo que le da el toque final es el idioma. El portugues es uno de los idiomas unicos para cantar una cancion.
Ed Motta é apenas um gênio. Tenho muita pena de quem não conhece.

Hi Paul! If you're taking suggestions, you might want to listen to his most famous songs: "colombina", "Manuel" and "fora da lei", just to gauge his caliber. Also, it's important to have in mind that he is the nephew of another brazilian popular music titan, Tim Maia. If you liked Ed, you're gonna have a blast with Tim! Both uncle and nephew were largely influenced by african american musical genres and were the main exponents of R&B, Soul, Funk (original) and others in Brazil.
I find Ed much more interesting than Tim musically. IMHO.
I literally just bought my first Tim Maia record!!! That’s a great fun fact that they’re related🙏🏾🙏🏾

Thank you for listening to his music! He is about to release his 14th studio album on October 20th, and has three singles out! Safely Far, Slumberland and Deluxe Refuge. The latter has been receiving a lot of attention from radio stations in Europe and Asia.
(p.s.: Although many have suggested his uncle's work, who has an amazing discography, they are not so similar.)
not similar at all, I totally agree 👍🏽
Glad to hear he's getting some attention - he certainly deserves it!@@oyuriteixeira
As a Brazilian who grew up listening to Ed Motta's albums, I can say to you: You are a fortunate man to have experienced Ed Motta's compositions - he is a sacred monster of international music. His harmonies, melodies, and contributions are just beyond reality. Here is a curiosity: most of Ed's compositions are performed in two languages, each receiving a unique sense, but preserving the original melody. In his album named Aystelum Ed creates a fictitious new language specifically to play with the sonority of languages. I hope you enjoy it! Please welcome to this new world of Ed Motta!
Greatest "ED MOTTA"! I AM BRASILIAN AND HIS THE Very BEST PLAYER "SHOW MAN"! SUCCESS FOR YOUR CHANNEL!
Great!! Ed is a genius! For anyone interested in listening to other songs, I would recommend:
- Dondi
- SOS amor
- Entre e ouça
- Dez mais um amor
- Vamos dançar
Thank you for your recommendations, I will be checking these out 😀
Só faltou dizer quanto ele é idiota em falar mal de Raul Seixas, por exemplo, depois querer tirar o corpo fora. É uma adição que não se pode deixar de colocar no currículo dele.
ed is that classical case of listen to his music, but never, NEVER listen to what he says 😅
he's so full of sh*t, absolutely insufferable
Grato por falar em Ed Motta , grande artista brasileiro.
Ed Mota's background is so great, He's the nephew of a Brazilian Music Legend, Tim Maia. So, some of his background comes from his uncle, and Tim Maia is the incarnation of Brazilian Funk and Soul back on the 1970's.
Some of Bossa Nova greatests songs were written by Tim Maia. As a Brazilian, I recomend you to also listen to Tim Maia as well.
Thanks for the video, it was great to watch it.
As a Brazilian musician, I'm really honored and proud of watching this video about Ed Motta.
He's definitely a great musician and not acknowledged enough in Brazil nowadays for the fact that music in Brazil has been going through a bit of controversy, having great unappreciated talented musicians.
Ed Motta's music is high standard and definitely has its space guaranteed in the business, forever.
You should listen to his 1st album with Conexão Japery. It's amazing!!!!
Woohoo - first to see this!
Also, Paul, love how you respect your student and name him for hipping you to Ed Motta. We do indeed teach AND learn with our students. ❤

Hi Paul, I’m a Brazilian music junkie. And I’ve heard of Ed Motta, very often. But until this video I’d never bothered to check him out. So thanks for this video.
His 2013 album, AOR, is perfect
Check his uncle's music: Tim Maia.
Ed Motta is fantastic, but Tim Maia is a whole next level as he is a brazilian legend.
@@wendelzinhodoautotune1399 It's kinda sad to me when I see people comparing two amazing artists from the same family in this way. The video is about Ed Motta and his basslines, can we appreciate him without needing to cite or compare him with his uncle? I wonder.
Ed Motta has a bass and others instruments inside his mouth, everything he creates he sings before. He is a complete musician.
"Dwitza" is one of his best albums, IMO. mostly instrumental, it's a masterpiece
Ed Motta is great! I love him! Makes me proud to be Brazilian 🇧🇷
Thanks for reviewing Ed Motta. Brazilians pronounce his name Edgy Mawta. I've been a fan for years. He started out in like dance/RnB sound, elements of funk, fusion, soul, bossa, jazz and even flirted with a little of free jazz. His uncle was the "father of Brazilian soul", Tim Maia, who Rolling Stone Brazil magazine named the greatest singer of Brazilian music!

My brother!! If you like Ed Motta... Ya gotta give Luizao Maia a listen.. THE Godfather of Brazilian Bass!!
His new studio album will be released on October 20 th and will feature Alberto Continentino on bass and he is absolutely AMAZING !
I discovered Ed Motta two years ago, listening this great bass line played in a Ed's show by the stunning bass player Fernando Rosa. (Now Fernando is on tour with Lenny Kravitz). Brasilian music is surprising, from the bossa nova school to the contemporary scene it has reached the highest level...and increases!!!
Loved the video but the like was for the phrase "We teach, we learn". Couldn't agree more.
So many treasures within Brazilian music!! Dig more and more! Merci/Obrigada/Thank you!

Damn finally Ed Motta getting some recognition! He's so underrated here in Brazil bro...ppl just want to listen to pop shit nowadays
Go for his “live” album. It’s going to blow your mind.
Thanks for the videos man! Always a pleasure to watch you talk about music. Ed says that his biggest incluence is Steely Dan, but when singing, is Donny Hathaway! He’s a record store nerd since he was a kid, acquiring a crazy musical knowleadge.
What's the name of the live album?

Ed Motta's great. Tons of Steely Dan influence, so no surprise I like his stuff. The entire "AOR" album this song is from is particularly wonderful. The next song on the album after this one, "1978/Leave the Radio On" has killer bass on it too (and some really cool Rhodes licks). Also, check out the beautiful song "Dondi," where the bass line has this really fun move up an octave for popped hammer-on that is straight out of Boz Scaggs's Lowdown.
1978 (Leave the radio on) It's delightful to listen to ❤
Hi pdbass. Wellcome to the world of Ed Motta, the pure juice of Soul, Jazz, R&B, etc. My favorite music of him is "Fora da Lei". 🎸🎹🎷🎶🎵🎼
DWITZA is an amazing álbum! Alberto Continentino is the great bassist! Best wish from Brasil
OH LORDY!! What a line Marta/Smile is! Gorgeous stuff- loving this reinvigorated dive into Ed Motta's music.
Oh yeah, Ed Motta is a great songwriter, pianist, singer and producer. Talking about Brazilian bass player? Junior Braguinha is another Brazilian genius to follow carefully! Great video as usual ;) THX
Yes, Braguinha is wild!! So good!
please dont forget ARTHUR MAIA, he was amazing too
The bassist who previously played with Ed Motta is also a true icon of the electric bass.
Look for Alberto Continentino, and listen to his bass lines on Ed Motta's previous CDs.
He's the groove guy!
Im always happy when i see Ed Motta being recognized. He surely is one of the best musicians, composers alive in the world today. Ive seen a lot of comments saying Ed Motta has brazilian music as his main influence, even MPB. Although there are a LOT of good brazilian artists. This information is not correct at all. Ed Motta is mainly jazz influenced and HEAVILY soaked in North American music. Considering the collection of records he has, brazillian music is the least influences he has. Yes Ed Motta is Tim Maias nephew, but they come from different places regarding music taste and music formation.
Paul, I want to congrulate you because you helped me reconnect with a musician I had forgotten! A friend had gone to work in Brazil, twenty years ago, in Florianopolis and had brought back a lot of records there [France]. We had listened to it 'til we drop! I was rather, at the time, attracted by the Samba-Reggae style, Axé, Batucada, or Baile Funk... But as I got older now, his voice came back to me, deep and melodious like a cello, a harmonious meeting between Al Jareau and Barry White. I swiftly run to listen to it! Thank you, thank you...
I'm from Argentina, and I'm a big fan of Ed Motta. He's one of the best Latin American singers ever. Although he has recorded more adventurous music, I really like he's "breakthrough" album "Manual Prático Para Festas, Bailes E Afins Vol. 1". One hit after the other, and great bass lines too.
Brazil mentioned 🎉 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
The bassist of that song, and for many many years with Ed Motta, is Alberto Continentino. His whole family has great musicians, like his own siblings. He's the nephew of Leo Gandelman. Alberto is also one of the nicest people you'll ever meet!
Hey! Great video! Ed Motta really deserves all the praise. As for his music, I suggest the "Dwitza" album from 2001. Cheers!
Wow, I've never seen anyone mention Ed Motta on UA-cam, he's awesome! Thanks for covering this....
I love those bass lines.
I'm brazilian and I used to listen to Ed Motta's songs. To be honest, I don't have knowledge enough to say something technique about his music. But, I need to agree with you, every time when I listen to him I feel the emotions pulsating in his bass. I listened to him waiting for the vocals techniques more than bass line. And I really love the funny and smart way that he imitates a huge range of instruments. I used to listen to "Colombina", "Fora da Lei" and "Vendaval".
So wonderful to watch this video! I first heard Marta roughly five years ago, and I still recall trying to collect the pieces of my jaw and pick them up off the floor. Ed Motta is a treasure!
Wow never heard his music before. Thanks for making this video. Wow on Ondas Sonoras he got David T to play and really a lot a room for him on the track. Motta is the real deal. David T has such a distinct style.
00:56 OH my friend, you got it 100% right. His FAVOURITE ALBUM is Steely Dan's Aja. He stated in an interview about his vynil collection that AJA is the album he uses in ALL HIS GIGS to EQ the speakers. Amazing.
Thank you so much for this Ed Motta's bass coverage I just found. I enjoyed so much your rare one on Donald Fagen "The Nightly" bass podcast, and now you've come at Ed Motta, whom I first found on his "Dwitza" album, is the connection I had long been looking for between Brazilian jazz and Steely Dan. So, "AOR" is indeed a gem for me, that I also bought the Japan bonus version.
Been a fan of Ed’s bass lines for a while now. Much like Brand New Heavies & Jamiroquai, he’s taken classic American music and handed back to the world even better!!!!
Wow ! Ed is one of my favorite artist from Brazil .Manual Practice Festas was my first exposure to his work .Amazing ! Thanks for your work !
This guy is good, he has a swing that seems to have added several styles, seasoned with Brazilian musicality. If I had to make a comparison with ED Motta's music, I would say that it is the best, the finest food we have in Brazil.
I'm not a musician, but I like listening to music.

I jammed once with Ed Mota during a party and on the next day he said about my performance to a friend of mine without knowing he already know me. It was a huge compliment. But a couple of days after he jammed with Robinho, who is a close friend of mine also, and he said "omg what São Paulo has in its water to have so many amazing bass players". Other huge compliment as well. Later he invited Robinho to be part of his band.

Hey P! Great video as always. Let me tell you, an Ed Motta fan and bass player myself, it seems to be going on kind of a collective discovery of his music by bass players all around. Every day I found out another of my favourite bass channels covering his work.
If you are looking for suggestions, I would recomend you to check out "Piquenique". It was his first bassline I learned by ear, it has a great sense of motion and crazy articulations just in "Smile".
