Just a tip for Portuguese pronunciation: Whenever you see an "NH" like in "PipoquinNHa", "BraguiNHa" this nh should pronounce as something like a "Ñ" in Spanish. Like "Lasaña" this "ñ" we understand here in Brazil as a syllable structureed with "nh". Great job on the video by the way! ^^

Most of them I have never heard. About the pronounce: words with nh sounds like ñ in spanish and usually is for diminutive, Pipoquinha (Pipokiña) means little pop corn
Great video! Indeed, here in Brazil we are very lucky to have theses great bass players! But I would have loved to see some on that list playng brazilian music, and not just fusion.
Some germanic languages have a more organized way to make that distinction: ä ë ï ö ü - aa, a (as in gabe but the a is cut short before it drops into a ee sound), ee, o (as in robe but cut short again) and oo.
Scott, great content man. I'm a Brazilian living in a different country and It's amazing to see other people appreciating our music and culture. Keep the good work man.
Terrific post and looong overdue!! Your suggestion at the end, namely spotlighting bassists from a single country each time, is also a great idea. Having said that, I strongly suggest a “Brazil vol. 2 clip”. Brazil is a huge country whose music is among the most stylistically diverse and sophisticated (rhythmically AND harmonically) on the planet. Its pool of world class musicians is vast in direct proportion. All of which is to say, you’ve barely even scratched the surface. Here’s a short list just off the top of my head: Ney Conceiçao, Sergio Groove, Neguinho Zaza, Kleytton Farney, Zuzo Moussawer. Thanks again for another fantastic installment! 🙏🏿🎶🔥🔥❤️🦁☀️ (You do need to work on that pronunciation, though. 😁)
"Scott, you're my first bass teacher, for years. Even being in english, I've been watching your tutorials, in your website, even before you reach 100k subscribers in UA-cam. Thank you for the content that you brought me, and thank you too from bringing up the greatest bass players from my country. PS: Now it's up to you to translate that. =D "
Incredible bassists you ´ve showed, Brazil has an wonderful evergreen musical amazonicing vibe. As friendly neighbour you can also check out some of our main argentinian bassists: Pedro Aznar, Guillermo Vadalá, Willy Gonzalez, Cesar Franov, Matias Mendez, Diego Arnedo and from Uruguay but living in Argentina the incredibly musical Daniel Maza. Cheers
Sorry, but 80% of Brazilians don't even know the Amazon! Lol It's too far away! Brazil is very big and traveling from South to North takes a lot of hours ...
What a great content! As a brazilian (trying to be a bassist!) i’m proud that we’ve a plenty of great musicians. Check this names: Sizão Machado, Arismar Espirito Santo (Thiago’s father), David Rangel, Serginho Carvalho, Marcelo Mariano, André Vasconcelos, Alberto Continentino 💙💙💙 Thanks for spreading good music and vibes!
Great video Scott, in regards to checking out other bassists in other countries, I recommend Japan. I'd start with Tetsuo Sakurai from the band Casiopea.
Too many unbelievable bassists to count in Japan! Now I'm trying to keep up with Brazil, but when I was younger all my influence was from Japan. Rock bass has a unique vocabulary there. Very melodic and untethered. IKUO is a famous rock sideman, as is FIRE. Guys in bands who developed that style were J of Luna Sea, Ka-yu of Janne Da Arc, Masaki, Naoto Shibata of Anthem, Tetsuya of L'arc en Ciel, on and on and on....
You should also check Ney Conceição from "nosso trio". He's an amazing bassist too. "Nosso trio" was formed by Ney, Nelson Faria (the guitarist who's playing with Arthur Maia at 10:12) and Kiko Freitas
Definitely going towards the Metal scene. Angra is an amazing band and it showcases Brazil in such an interesting way because they somehow use all these Brazilian elements bringing something new for metal bands!
Great video! Some quick rules of thumb to pronounce Portuguese names: 1) If the word has an accent, that's the accented syllable in that word. 2) NH sounds like the Spanish Ñ. Like in Piñata. 3) QUI (as in "Pipoquinha") sounds like "KEE". (So: Pi-po-KEE-ña) 4) GUI sounds like the first part of GEAR. So Bra-GEE-ña.
Very Nice list! I’m fr Brazil check other names like: Marcelo Mariano, Sérginho Carvalho, Ney Conceição, Jamil Joanes, Sizão Machado, André Vasconcelos, Chico Willcox and much more
Nossa senhora!!!Pode crer mano!
Amazing video, thanks for recognizing our country for something good! Like a lot of people said, there are a lot of names missing in the video, but it's ok, it's impossible to show everyone. Great job!
Ok, Scott... I’m too damn old (59 in March) to be even thinking about playing like these guys! I was never very fast because I tend to be heavy handed. These guys are all stellar, but some players catch your ear and won’t let go. Junior Braguinha... stupid good. Makes me think of Adam Nitti. Great sound, ridiculous chops.
My dad was a jazz musician from the 70s to the 80s here in Brazil and, being in the scene, he was friends (or atleast acquaintances) with Nico Assumpção. He told me that sometimes Nico would listen to a really complicated bass solo just once and play it back masterfully. He specifically remembers a time in which he learned and played back a long Jaco Pastorius solo after listening to it once or twice. He also says he was a nice guy, but kind of weird and unhealthy and addicted to coke
Scott congratilulation by this video. Search from Alberto Continentino and Ney Conceição they’re very good bass player. We’ve many others bassists, waint for volume 2 from this video!!! 🎼🎶🎵
Brazil has A LOT of amazing bass players, as well as other musicians. You've just presented some of them. I think this video deserves a part 2. It's worthwhile searching: Ney Conceição Fábio Aposan
Great video. As brazilian, this video cause me goosebumps. Seeing an american talking about brazilians bassist like this, it's incredible.. Thank you. Make my day.
Dear Scott, My name is Wagner. I'm a musician (singer/songwriter) from Porto Alegre, Brazil. I've been also an English teacher for over 20 years, therefore I can help you a bit on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation on the names you're trying to figure out how to do so. I've developed an interesting way to use English phonemes as a reference for non native PT speakers. I'm also a native Portuguese-BR teacher, so if you ever need tips or lessons, I'll be really happy to help. ;) Anyway, please check below how to pronounce the names. Munir = pronounced /Moo-near/ Thiago Espírito Santo = /Chee-ah-go Is-pee-ree-too Sun-too/ M. Pipoquinha = /Pee-paw-king-ah/ Júnior Braguinha = /Bra-ging-ah/ Glécio Nascimento = /Glass-ee-o Nah-see-men-toe/ Fernando Rosa = /Fair-nun-do Haws-uh/ Robinho Tavares = /Haw-bing-oh Tah-vah-riss Ricardinho Paraíso = /He-car-jing-oh Pah-ra-ee-zo/ A. Maia = /My-ah/ This last name might be a bit complex: Nico Assumpção = /Knee-co Ah-soon-sung_oong/ Well, I really hope these tips help you. Take care and feel free to contact me on my e-mail, if you wish: wagnertorre@gmail.com Cheers!!!
Serginho Carvalho, Marcelo Mariano, Augusto Albuquerque, Ted Furtado, André Vasconcelos, Arthur de Paula, Duca Tambasco, Julio Cézar Motta, Felipe Andreolli, Fernando Molinari...
I'd really love to hear some ensemble playing. "Blazing" technique all the time gets old in a hurry. To me the real bass genius is to play a part that seems almost clairvoyant in how it connects the chords together, supports the rhythm and weaves in and out of the arrangement. I'll bet all those guys are pretty great, but with the exception of the fretless "This Masquerade" guy, this video didn't really entice me to seek out more material from any of them.
Im really worn out by the “ I’m the whole orchestra “ thing . The flurry of notes tapping and drumming that are packed in a tightly as possible. I’m impressed by bands, many voices coming together . I can play extremely fast myself by the way. Sweep and tremolo pick ( guitar ) sorry I’m lurking on a bass channel it’s not jealousy . But I love Jaco Pastorius style
Yeah, I just made a similar comment. The fretless player stood out to me too. There were two other players in this video that at least had a discernible groove -- the one Scott said had the "monster pocket" and the one playing the flatwound P bass. But other than that, it was just noodling to me.
Great job, you picked up the only vastly influential player of the bunch. Arthur Maia is just heads above the others in musicality. And he played with everyone in Brazil.

Great video! Indeed, here in Brazil we are very lucky to have theses great bass players! But I would have loved to see some on that list playng brazilian music, and not just fusion.
quick tip on Brazilian portuguese: "i" sounds like "ee" and "u" sounds like "oo"
Really
make more sense, i guess
yea :)
Here’s a short list just off the top of my head:
Ney Conceiçao, Sergio Groove, Neguinho Zaza, Kleytton Farney, Zuzo Moussawer.
Thanks again for another fantastic installment!

(You do need to work on that pronunciation, though. 😁)
Acrescento, Chico Gomes, André Gomes, Andre Neiva, julio Cesar...
The name is Michael "Little Popcorn"
Pipoquinha

Oh man, such a great video ! Music is a trade of experience and love.

Cheers
+ Javier Malosetti
+ Paz Lenchantin awesome player from Argentina, the bassist of pixies and perfect circle
Sorry, but 80% of Brazilians don't even know the Amazon! Lol
It's too far away! Brazil is very big and traveling from South to North takes a lot of hours ...
thank you! brasil is so proud of you!!!!! cheers Scott!!!! love you man!!
What a great content! As a brazilian (trying to be a bassist!) i’m proud that we’ve a plenty of great musicians. Check this names: Sizão Machado, Arismar Espirito Santo (Thiago’s father), David Rangel, Serginho Carvalho, Marcelo Mariano, André Vasconcelos, Alberto Continentino 💙💙💙
Thanks for spreading good music and vibes!

Every time I watched Arthur Maia playing, I want to cry! Left us too early! He was a very kind, very generous musician!
Man, what a honor to be a brazilian when we see content like these. Amazing, Scott.
BRASIL, vc é o meu orgulho
Thanks for this Scott! Regards from Brasil - Rio de Janeiro!
Great video Scott, in regards to checking out other bassists in other countries, I recommend Japan. I'd start with Tetsuo Sakurai from the band Casiopea.
There's also Mitsuru Sutoh, Yoshihiro Naruse..
What a precious content. Thank you for this!
You should see Felipe Andreoli...the guy is a beast.
Also : Greetings from Brasil!
Definitely going towards the Metal scene. Angra is an amazing band and it showcases Brazil in such an interesting way because they somehow use all these Brazilian elements bringing something new for metal bands!
Yes!!
I follow Felipe on Instagram...man's a beast,his solos are terrific ❤❤❤
I agree, Felipe Andreoli it's a monster of metal, crazy tappings
Nice video! Thanks for sharing good music with us. Greetings from Brazil!
Great video!
Some quick rules of thumb to pronounce Portuguese names:
1) If the word has an accent, that's the accented syllable in that word.
2) NH sounds like the Spanish Ñ. Like in Piñata.
3) QUI (as in "Pipoquinha") sounds like "KEE". (So: Pi-po-KEE-ña)
4) GUI sounds like the first part of GEAR. So Bra-GEE-ña.
Very Nice list! I’m fr Brazil check other names like: Marcelo Mariano, Sérginho Carvalho, Ney Conceição, Jamil Joanes, Sizão Machado, André Vasconcelos, Chico Willcox and much more

ETERNOS MESTRES.
Oq enfraquece e a droga mesmo infelizmente
Scott congratilulation by this video. Search from Alberto Continentino and Ney Conceição they’re very good bass player.
We’ve many others bassists, waint for volume 2 from this video!!! 🎼🎶🎵
Brazil has A LOT of amazing bass players, as well as other musicians. You've just presented some of them. I think this video deserves a part 2. It's worthwhile searching:
Ney Conceição
Fábio Aposan
Acrescento o kleyton Farney, Chico Gomes, Julio Cesar, André gomes.

Great presentation, thanks Scott, Brazil rules.
In Brazil we say "toca pra caralho esse desgraçado".

Brazil has a very harmonical and flavored music and the bassists must "go together" .... Rs

Dear Scott,
My name is Wagner.
I'm also a native Portuguese-BR teacher, so if you ever need tips or lessons, I'll be really happy to help. ;)
Anyway, please check below how to pronounce the names.
Munir = pronounced /Moo-near/
Thiago Espírito Santo = /Chee-ah-go Is-pee-ree-too Sun-too/
M. Pipoquinha = /Pee-paw-king-ah/
Júnior Braguinha = /Bra-ging-ah/
Glécio Nascimento = /Glass-ee-o Nah-see-men-toe/
Fernando Rosa = /Fair-nun-do Haws-uh/
Robinho Tavares = /Haw-bing-oh Tah-vah-riss
Ricardinho Paraíso = /He-car-jing-oh Pah-ra-ee-zo/
A. Maia = /My-ah/
This last name might be a bit complex: Nico Assumpção = /Knee-co Ah-soon-sung_oong/
Well, I really hope these tips help you.
Take care and feel free to contact me on my e-mail, if you wish: wagnertorre@gmail.com
Cheers!!!

But I love Jaco Pastorius style
lol
Yeah, I just made a similar comment. The fretless player stood out to me too. There were two other players in this video that at least had a discernible groove -- the one Scott said had the "monster pocket" and the one playing the flatwound P bass. But other than that, it was just noodling to me.
Great job, you picked up the only vastly influential player of the bunch. Arthur Maia is just heads above the others in musicality. And he played with everyone in Brazil.
Well, and Nico also, I shouldn't comment before finishing the video...
