Is BRAZIL the new BASS CAPITAL of the WORLD?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2020
- A few years back I caught a crazy video on UA-cam of a 13 year old kid tearing it up on bass. I didn’t even know who he was at the time, but I was completely blown away. I later found out that his name was Michael Pipoquinha and that he was from Brazil.
Most people might only know Brazil for samba or The Girl from Ipanema, but that's only a fraction of the story. Brazilian music is a whole world of its own with some unbelievable bass players that everyone needs to know about!
In this video we’re shining the spotlight on 10 AMAZING bassists from Brazil.
You’re going to learn:
- All about the ‘Brazilian Jaco’.
- And the first time I heard Munir Hossn.
- Why Glecio Nascimento is one of the scariest players on the planet right now.
- And why I need a pass on some of the pronunciation!
As always, see you in the shed…
Scott :)

My wife and I are musicians (from the US) and we often have Brazilian music playing in the house because we are fans of the sheer musicality and virtuosity that Brazilians are known for while playing their music.

quick tip on Brazilian portuguese: "i" sounds like "ee" and "u" sounds like "oo"
Really
make more sense, i guess
yea :)
Some germanic languages have a more organized way to make that distinction: ä ë ï ö ü - aa, a (as in gabe but the a is cut short before it drops into a ee sound), ee, o (as in robe but cut short again) and oo.
Arthur Maia's uncle, also played with the legendary Tim Maia (basically the Brazilian James Brown, Sam Cooke, Al Green, Isaac Hayes and George Clinton all combined), his name was Luizão Maia (not related to Tim, I guess), but everybody should check him (Luizão Maia)
Luizão was the legend and inspired all laters generations.
Yes, Luizão seems to be where the poetic grooving comes from ;) A great master!

@@Saxyct But he separated the syllable.
@@lumer2b nope, I'm referring to something else. "ging" is a single syllable but an American would still pronounce it wrong. it should be pronounced "giñ"

I been saying this for a minute. It truly does leave me speechless how naturally gifted Brazilian people are, and not just at music, in general.
Dear Scott,
My name is Wagner. I'm a musician (singer/songwriter) from Porto Alegre, Brazil.
I've been also an English teacher for over 20 years, therefore I can help you a bit on Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation on the names you're trying to figure out how to do so.
I've developed an interesting way to use English phonemes as a reference for non native PT speakers.
I'm also a native Portuguese-BR teacher, so if you ever need tips or lessons, I'll be really happy to help. ;)
Anyway, please check below how to pronounce the names.
Munir = pronounced /Moo-near/
Thiago Espírito Santo = /Chee-ah-go Is-pee-ree-too Sun-too/
M. Pipoquinha = /Pee-paw-king-ah/
Júnior Braguinha = /Bra-ging-ah/
Glécio Nascimento = /Glass-ee-o Nah-see-men-toe/
Fernando Rosa = /Fair-nun-do Haws-uh/
Robinho Tavares = /Haw-bing-oh Tah-vah-riss
Ricardinho Paraíso = /He-car-jing-oh Pah-ra-ee-zo/
A. Maia = /My-ah/
This last name might be a bit complex: Nico Assumpção = /Knee-co Ah-soon-sung_oong/
Well, I really hope these tips help you.
Take care and feel free to contact me on my e-mail, if you wish: wagnertorre@gmail.com

I agree, Felipe Andreoli it's a monster of metal, crazy tappings
My dad was a jazz musician from the 70s to the 80s here in Brazil and, being in the scene, he was friends (or atleast acquaintances) with Nico Assumpção. He told me that sometimes Nico would listen to a really complicated bass solo just once and play it back masterfully. He specifically remembers a time in which he learned and played back a long Jaco Pastorius solo after listening to it once or twice. He also says he was a nice guy, but kind of weird and unhealthy and addicted to coke

Thank you for the excelente vídeo!!!
If I may recommend someone: Fernando Molinari, he is an awesome composer/player... I'm glad I got to see him live, so much energy and feeling going on.
Terrific post and looong overdue!! Your suggestion at the end, namely spotlighting bassists from a single country each time, is also a great idea. Having said that, I strongly suggest a “Brazil vol. 2 clip”. Brazil is a huge country whose music is among the most stylistically diverse and sophisticated (rhythmically AND harmonically) on the planet. Its pool of world class musicians is vast in direct proportion. All of which is to say, you’ve barely even scratched the surface. Here’s a short list just off the top of my head:
Ney Conceiçao, Sergio Groove, Neguinho Zaza, Kleytton Farney, Zuzo Moussawer.
Thanks again for another fantastic installment!
🙏🏿🎶🔥🔥❤️🦁☀️
(You do need to work on that pronunciation, though. 😁)
Acrescento, Chico Gomes, André Gomes, Andre Neiva, julio Cesar...
