    Having my high school team watch this video right now. Watching & Listening to the way these two think about wrestling is really valuable for these young kids. I think wrestling is a unique sport where the line between art and athletics is very faint.

    That was absolutely terrific! Thank you. Interesting what Dake said about Smith. Askren took a similar approach, but as everyone knows, his style was a bit unorthodox -- even reckless some would say, especially at the national level.

    This video changed my whole perspective on practicing. I used to just believe you need to take the same shot, and drill it over and over again. But I find when I'm wrestling anyone i just can't seem to hit the same shot with the same setup because it usually isn't there. Also when wrestling live, feel like if i gave up a takedown i did something wrong; sometimes that's not always the case. Like my chest wrap wasn't working because I would actually block the arm from swimming across in the crackdown position. My coach is always saying, we will go live later, or we would learn a technique and just drill it over and over again and then I wouldn't be able to execute going live. This should be what should take up the most time during practice in this order of most to least: play wrestling, then drilling and practicing technique, then going live. Thank you Kyle and Dake this really will take my wrestling to the next level.

      Play wrestling is a great thing. Hated when my coaches stopped us in high school to just drill over and over again

    • @jwomackandcheese73
      @jwomackandcheese73 2 роки тому

      It's none about finding what works for you and what your style is. Wrestling is all about feel. What moves do you like and you can set up consistently. What is impossible for your opponent to stop even if they know it is coming because you are that good at it. For Jordan Burroughs, blast double. David Taylor, ankle pick. Dake is super dangerous if you shoot too deep on him (Burroughs learned that lesson more than once). Every wrestler has their unique style and move set.
      For me slide by was my number one takedown, it got to the point where my training partner knew it was coming couldn't stop it. My oppentes eventually figured out that was my go to, couldn't stop it. There were also so many other finishes off that move, simple go behind, single, double, body lock to a return. Bottom knee slide escape depending on pressureor or a roll (if they are high or pressuring hard). Top, knee pick break down, power half turn. These are moves I teach when I'm coaching my high schoolers.
      Ultimately I let them play with stuff and get their feel. I present present with options and let them go from there. New people basics and have them enjoy the sport. Advanced guys and guys looking at getting to the next level give them options and find their own way.

    • @jwomackandcheese73
      @jwomackandcheese73 2 роки тому

      @@MrZoora23 when I was in high school it was 2 hours of drilling and an hour of live. We also would drill our top 3 takedown, breakdowns, turns, and escapes/Reversals. Now I coach at my high-school and they have two hour practices, high intensity drilling of postions, they get live in once or twice a week. The head coach and other coaches (I work full time and I'm I'm grad school so I get there when I can) are trying to copy the top colleges and the way the Olympic styles practice and it is more that play wrestling. Obviously high school is running the gambit of experience so they try to integrate both.

      I think everyone in the thread has great points, but it's also about coming into ones adult body. Sure, you can bulk up and build strength as a late teen and early 20s, but most guys start to fill out their frame at around 23-25. Granted, this varies, but it seems common in my experience, both in high school wrestling and MMA gyms and camps.
