  • BA announced in July that all of its fleet of 31 747s would be retired with immediate effect. Today, Tuesday 18th August 2020 is the day when the first of the 9 remaining 747s still based at London Heathrow, G-CIVD; departed for the final time, heading for Castellon in Spain where the aircraft will be broken up.
    Here is film of the final taxi, takeoff and climbaway of G-CIVD, from Heathrow. Sadly the road noise obscured the Comms from the Tower but as the 747 disappeared into the clouds, the Tower passed on their sadness at this day; which was echoed by the Flight crew on the 747 who said they were handing off with a "heavy heart". A sad day indeed.

    Watching the feed from Manchester this morning and how Virgin sent one of their 747's off , what a difference that was , stopping for photos , wing wave , lets hope BA does something when the last of their fleet retires , although going by their press releases i doubt it

    I flew on G-CIVD back in January when I was flying home with my family from Cape Town to London. I have footage of that flight, but I won't upload it for many years in order to try to protect my identity. I also have some photos of the plane from right after we landed at Heathrow. I will never forget that flight. There were many problems with the plane. The IT system wasn't working, and this meant that none of the video screens were working, which left us to use our iPhones and iPads. There was also a baby who was crying before takeoff, and this made us irritated. The baby cried even harder and even louder after landing, and a woman shouted at the parents. (I think that she was German or something because of her accent, I couldn't really tell but my mum could) The flight was a New Years' flight, and it was really bad. What I didn't know, however, was that something was going awry in Wuhan and all of our holidays for the rest of 2020 would be cancelled, and that a couple of months after, the plane that we flew on would be retired from the British Airways fleet. What I also didn't know was that it would be the very last time in my entire life that me and my family would ever fly on a 747. The flight number was BA042. Were any of you on this flight? Please let me know. Thank you.
    I will miss you 747. You played a key part of my childhood. You flew to New York before 9/11. You flew to Hong Kong before we gave it back to China in 1997.
    In July, I thought that 2020 could not get any worse, but then I heard the news that British Airways was retiring all of their 747s because they had nowhere to go due to the current ongoing coronavirus pandemic. I was devastated. I thought I was dreaming. But I wasn't. This was a reality.
    You played a key part in the history of British Airways and they would definitely not be the same without you. Your so sudden retirement without warning has touched the hearts of everyone at British Airways. That includes all cabin crew, all customers, and all dedicated customers as well, like me and my family.
    You shouldn't be flying to Castellon to be scrapped to parts or go to another airline. You should be put on display at Heathrow for everyone to see so that you will be remembered for decades to come.
    I will miss flying on you to Cape Town, Dubai, and back to London from New York.
    British Airways had more of you and they cared for you more than any other airline did for their 747s before they retired them. I will never forget you. "You were good, son. Real good. Maybe even the best." (Soldier quote from TF2)
    Goodbye, old girl. You will be missed.

    If only BAW and VIR, not only two of UK’s 🇬🇧 most dominant commercial airliners, but Jumbo Jet carriers would purchase the 748s to replace the aging 744s. This will most definitely be a tough one to swallow, especially with both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic being the primary customers of the 747-400s.

    A sad announcement but BA are only interested in their balance sheet. They axed Concorde (too early!) and lost a worthy flagship. They’ve now made their fleet far less interesting by removing the iconic ‘jumbo’. Sad times, covid has a lot to answer for. :-(

    • @AnthonyFurnival
      @AnthonyFurnival 3 роки тому

      @@HeathrowAircraft exactly! It was an unceremonious end too really - due to restrictions, all the fanfare that would have usually gone with it just wasn’t there. The question is, we’ve lost both flagship aircraft of my generation, what will be the next poster boy plane of BA? I just can’t see others filling the role in the way Concorde or the 747 did. They weren’t just planes, they were part of BAs image.

    • @HeathrowAircraft
      @HeathrowAircraft  3 роки тому

      @@AnthonyFurnival Yes you’re absolutely right. I wonder if it is the A350 - as I see that featured in the recent BA advert on TV? Maybe we’ll be lamenting the demise of the A350 and 787 in 25 years time - strange thought isn’t it 🤣

    • @AnthonyFurnival
      @AnthonyFurnival 3 роки тому +1

      @@HeathrowAircraft I think you are probably right in that they’ll use the A350 in this role but I’m not too sure it’ll attract the same amount of passion from the aviation fans - problem with all the new planes is that they are much and much alike in the sense that they lack the uniqueness of the 747 and it’s hump or being supersonic like Concorde. I just don’t feel they have the personalities of the older places like Concorde, the Comet, the DC-10, 707, 727, 747 etc - I’d love to be proven wrong but I can’t say I’m over excited for the future of civil aviation… there’s just nothing out there which excites me in terms of newer planes.
