BOAC Retro 747 Departs Heathrow. 20th June 2020. G-BYGC.

  • With the recent announcement that BA are suspending all training and recency for the 600 or so British Airways 747 pilots, the future looks very uncertain for the BA 747 fleet.
It was very poignant therefore that the beautiful BOAC retro 747; G-BYGC was listed to position to Cardiff Wales for storage today, so I headed up to Heathrow to catch what could possibly be the last time we see this magnificent aircraft operating out of Heathrow.
Enjoy the sight and sounds - full ATC comms as per usual and filmed in 4k.

Sorry, BEA customer here! As a child I flew on turbo-prop DC-4s and DC-6. And I can still remember the soft mint candies handed out by the stewardesses (no nonsense about air hostesses back then,) and how they would always let us children put our hand in the basket and get a few more of those delightful chewy mints!

Some years before- 1972- I was at BOS as a teenager at Terminal C (North terminal) as a BOAC 747-100 left for their trip home that day, as we were out on the Observation Deck- YES- Thats what I said- OUTSIDE on top of a terminal, back before the security clamp downs all began and rendered outdoor observations from a terminal extinct :)

We have taken these beauties very much for granted over the last 40+ years but the sad fact is that they are disappearing at an alarming rate and very soon there will be none left. They are a magnificent aircraft and I well remember by first flight in one return form New York JFK. It stopped briefly at Shannon in those days before going on to Manchester and as we descended through low cloud and rain the runway suddenly appeared below very close. Without warning the aircraft stood on its tail and the pilot applied full throttle, I was sitting toward the rear and was looking up the aircraft at a very steep angle. It was an amazing experience how such a big aircraft could go almost vertical having almost landed. After touching down and taxiing in the Pilot spoke on the intercom to apologise for the aborted landing in a laconic and cool voice "we are sorry for the excitement folks only as we were about to land we realised that there was a tractor on the runway" GULP

First flew BOAC in 1952 Accra to London via Tripoli and Rome, as a kid I remember those huge fans on the wings, a roaring fire in Tripoli's departure lounge and police on camels parading by.
Heathrow was but a few RAF concrete sheds and a Bedford coach that was taller at the back than the front.
Wow now I've seen B747s come and go along with Concorde, later scared the whatsit out of me, when it took off with me under the bonnet of my car west of the airport. I jumped at the roar knocked the bonnet stay and the lid came crashing down on my nut. The air then turned blue!!!!!!

Heathrow Aircraft - past and present. I was there five years and loved every second of it. I was 23 and the average age in the company was only 27. And yes, I rode the rocket-ship 757s every chance I got. They were my favorite fleet type. To this day I carry a key chain made from the fuselage of one of our 757s. It even has the tail number inscribed on it. There’s a company in the US that makes all sorts of things (even furniture) from planes sitting in the boneyard. Our four 747-206B were bought used from KLM and had all kinds of problems. We named one “Christine” after the Stephen King novel because it liked to randomly turn off all the cabin lights while in flight. But I loved them anyway despite their, uh, quirks.

BA had committed to 777s by 1995 when the first -200s were delivered and then continued with that commitment with the order for the longer range higher capacity -300 series 777. Certainly when I worked for BA in the early to mid 90s, the culture was Boeing not Airbus. The first A320s that joined the BA fleet had been ex B-Cal orders which BA took on when they acquired that airline in 1987/8 - interesting question though.
