My house is a 1930 colonial as well! It has almost 4,000 sq ft with original hardwood floors and tin ceilings. A woman stopped by last year when we were outside and she said she grew up in the house in the 1960s. She asked if the claw foot bathtub was still here and it is! She also showed us a picture of her and her sister outside when they lived here. I love the idea of leaving a letter that’s so cool, I’m sure the people that find it will love it.

Laine and Kevin, you may not have been able to have children (I had enough for both of us-8:), and, nevertheless, your impact and legacy lives on. Not only in the chain of title of properties you’ve „ owned,“ but in OURS, too. You’ve helped that home survive, and you’ve helped many, many others too.
Including me, my kids, and this old house I love.
YOU two are in ALL our chains of titles, whether they appear in print, or not.

Great Video! My wife and I have a 1930 Tudor Revival. While it's a different style, it is also built with sheet-rock over ship-lap walls. We also have original 1930's basket weave tile that we have had to work very hard to save from the black mastic monster and layers of linoleum.

My grandparents house had a "Maids button" under the dining table, at Grandfathers end. They made the mistake of telling 4 yr old me what it was one day. I must have crawled under the table a dozen times one night to press the button. Poor Gladys came every time!

Your reaction to the dining room color reminds me so much of our almost 100 year old house. We purchased it from my husband's parents (with great gratitude) but, God love her, my MIL had painted the dining room a horrible neon tangerine-ish color which we still aren't sure how to describe. It was the first thing we changed, 2 days after we moved in (interestingly 12 years ago to this day). I finally got the beautiful soft teal green dining room I had dreamed of after I had seen it in a historic homes magazine.

What a LOVELY home! I’ll be leaving our Family home of 52 years after the death of my 99 year old Mother. I might consider it for that Magnolia tree but I’m too attached to my New Jersey Shore, so will settle for a home in a 55+ development so as not to have to mow, rake or shovel sn__. I so enjoy all you do, thank you!

I once spent an entire summer pulling sixteen penny nails (a million of them!) out of 12’ 2x6 boards, so I laughed at the staples in the floor. 😂. I was 15 and my Dad wanted me to make space to rebuild the engine of a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle. Your house turned out beautifully; one look at all the pink carpet, wallpaper, and tile and my fiancé would have said ‘forget it!’ He hates pink. 😂

🔷I really hope that the real estate agent provides the two of you with a percentage of the proceeds from the sale. That living room is magnificent and my first thought when I saw it was that it would be a glorious room in which to have a grand or baby grand piano. This was great! You've mentioned this house before, and what a treat to see it and hear the stories. I loved If Walls Could Talk, especially when Grant Goodeve was still the host. What you do takes the fun of that show and brings it to another level. But, OMG! You gave me flashbacks! 1931 So Cal Spanish custom bungalow here, purchased in May 2003. Moved in 3rd week of October. The living, dining, and family room were all faded blue with gross matching carpet. That horror was only surpassed by the 1970s tan, brown, and yellow indoor/outdoor carpet in the kitchen, breakfast room, and laundry porch, which covered up four layers of linoleum, one for each decade up to 1970. I spent most of a weekend on my stomach with needle nose pliers pulling the ends of staples from the carpet pad out of the white oak floors; the top of each staple had been sheered off. The guest bedroom had Kelly green walls and dark red carpet, with cabbage rose print balloon valances. Our hex tiles in the main bath are yellow, with dark mauve tile trim around the edges. We even have the same pedestal sink you put in that first bathroom. My husband calls you "my people". :)

What an absolutely wonderful place to raise a family, or even if just a couple...I'd buy it in a heartbeat. And agree, I'd take this over a newer home any day all the time! I love the. commerotary going back and forth of Laine and Kevin. We were all hanging on your every word. Ok all this history made me think of things in my life. My brother bought a house that was on a flood plane. It was designated a flood area so they had to move the house. He bought the house from the people and they sold it for like twenty thousand. I think mostly because it was to be moved and there were several of them and they were getting them for free. It was a 3 bedroom house and when they moved it, the group of people selling it just cut everything below the foundation. Cut off wiring no stairway to the basement etc. He had a new basement built and they put the house on top of it. I'm mentioning all this because one bedroom had a Disney character border going around the middle of the room - You know a kid's room and the rest of the room was painted Pluto orange. I liked to go in that room and just scream real loud.
Another house.I saw in a neighboring town was probably built in the eighteen hundreds. It still had the room to deliver big blocks of Ice. They had turned this into a kitchen broom closet. It also had wood floors and where they had patched them in squares like yours, it was done with particle board! And around the room where the original ceiling fixtures on the floor because the people that had the house didn't like them but didn't throw them away. You said yours had original brick flooring. This one had the remnants of an elevator. It also had a toilet and sink downstairs and a full bath upstairs. I even think the laundry room was upstairs. Also two side porches or sunrooms on the north and south end.

Looking at that earlier exterior with its Greek revival details and shed roof porch, I’m reminded that the early 19s and 19 teens were all about diversity in building a mish mash styled house.
Mine is the same:1905 bungalow which also features Queen Anne Vic elements AND Colonial Revival hardware from the Sears catalog. This was a „ Modern“ home at the time!
It has pocket doors, high ceilings, 9“ simple baseboards, two bays, a turret room, tall windows, large-ish closets, stained glass, and a dining arch in 1-1/2 stories. Moreover, it was built with a wraparound porch but the entry was straight into the parlor. Also, it had electric lights from the get go!

Oh it was absolutely a mish-mash exterior when it started its life. I’d LOVE to rip that siding off and put this architraves back!

Wow guys! That house is amazing. Fun video, thanks for sharing. I wanted to mention that when my mom and dad bought their first tiny house in the early 70's it was about 80 years old and every room was pink.

Oh wow, y'all. The work you did is amazing. I love the letter. I cried reading it. Those young marriage years define us, and the houses we live in keep our shadows. This story increases my respect and love for you both. Y'all rock.

Wow! Y’all are selling me on every style home. 😹The exterior is really cute so not sure what I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting it to be so spacious & grand looking in the inside. Really cool house, I figured for the depression era it had to be at least a little wealthier family for sure. Love the brick rooms, columns, that bathroom and the red door was adorable too.

I love the original butler's pantries that the old homes have. I love and use mine the same way and it's great to have all the storage for dishes and cookware.

My c 1905 has wood kitchen floors. The boards run all the way across (15 feet)!
The house I lived in c 1898/ 1910 were the same: long boards running through the entry and the walls built on top!
