Classic Daimlers & Lanchesters - cars of the Daimler company 1900s-1990s

- Daimlers (and several Lanchesters) from the veteran, vintage and classic years make up this classic cars video. Several of the old b&w photos are originals from the pre-war days (from the vintage image archive on the main Old Classic Car site), the majority though are of classic Daimlers that we've seen at shows and in museums over the last 20 years or so, including a few restoration projects, scrapyard gems and garage finds.
Pre-war Daimlers include several examples of the Daimler 15hp series (including a van!), and also the DB17, while the post-war years are represented by cars such as the V8 250, SP250, Majestic & Majestic Major, XJ saloons and coupes (inc V12 Double Six Daimlers), and a DS420 Limousine. While the commercial vehicles built by Daimler aren't included here, I did include a Ferret scout car as a nod to the military types that the company produced. Post-war Lanchester is represented by the LD10, both Briggs and Barker bodied.
Years ago (c1991) I was tempted to rescue a pair of derelict Daimlers of the 1950s, namely a six-cylinder Majestic and the bigger-engined (4.5 V8) Majestic Major. Both were in poor shape having been sat outside for longer than was good for them. In the end I think the owner of the land on which the once-proud Daimlers had been left simply had them towed away :-(
Hopefully Daimler fans and appreciators will have found something in this photo collection of interest (please let me know in the comments).
Thanks for watching, more old-car videos coming along soon.

Hello, a Daimler fan here. I'm sure someone has said this somewhere in the threads before.
The unidentified Daimler OCY 42, is a Daimler 104 Sportsman by HJ Milliner. I own one, and only 69 were produced. 104 as in mph. Kindest Regards Stephen
Another great video that rekindles many happy memories! We bought a 1957 (PSG317) Century in 1969 for £26 from a colleague, initially to have a holiday in North Devon from Grangemouth. In the event, we had it for 5 or 6 years and sold it for £195. During that time, we had many holidays including some towing a caravan. Mechanically, it never gave us any serious trouble, apart from a broken half-shaft and worn steering joints. The body was another story, however; it suffered the rot that many cars of that era suffered. The Wilson Pre-selector gearbox took a bit of getting used to but was superb when operated correctly.
I had a DB181.... CVE 770 reg. Found in a field. I refurbished it body and motor... Brush painted it in Tekaloid Blue.Sueprisingly very good. 2 young children Mortgage no money !!!! Bolted towing hitch on the Strong bumper and towed caravan everywhere... Wilson EC gearbox Lovely.!!!! Towed jalopies for jalopy racing.. Wonderful car. My then wife trimmed her out beautifully... Should of kept the car and wife!!!! Happy Days... The car originally owned by The Earl of Bath.. Bodied after the war by Marshall of Cambridge. 1937/8 model actually. Run Transits now.. Loved my Daimler with her Red Leather custom made Radiator Muff.. Douglas F Vick Cheltenham Spa.....
OCY42 is a Daimler 104, which was later revised to become the Majestic.
Good heavens, all this and "groovy" music in the background, to boot! It's all just getting better and better!
Thanks for watching
Always thought Daimler seemed so much classier than Jaguar! I hadn't even been aware of the Daimler Dart until it was featured on either Top Gear or Car SOS and less than a week later I saw one and managed to have a quick chat with the very proud owner. I agree it's probably not the best looking design but it's certainly eyecatching. The 1905 Daimler at the motor museum was stunning.
I enjoyed your video of many Daimlers. I have a 1919 light 30 all original in excellent condition
When I was a kid back in the 60s we thought we were priveleged if we saw a Dart, now 50 years on I am more enamoured by the Lanchesters and the Daimlers of that era.
Queen Mary's 1935 Limousine, in which I saw her in Hyde Park in 1952, now at Coventry Transport Museum.
The police used to used those Daimler Darts painted in black. Used to see quite a few in and around London. (Believe it or not, I would rather hear more of your voice rather than the music. Might be an idea to reduce the music volume a tad more.)
Lovely cars thanks. I had the privilege of looking after a 'Dart' for 6 months a while ago, the looks may be an acquired taste but to drive it and hear that V8 burble is to die for. I also have a '67 250 V8 saloon which I just love and cant wait to get back on the road following a major engine rebuild.
Another superb collection of cars, live the SP250.
In Australia one was race with great success by the Geoghan brothers.
Never noticed before that all the older models have bonnet sidewings that are completely without any louvres. Very interesting! Wonderful video, thank you so much from the Netherlands!
Thanks for watching!
The bonnet sides don't need louvres unless your engine is prone to overheating. Daimlers tend to promote leisurely progress so don't get stressed like that. The side panels in mine are actually double-skinned, probably with asbestos in the sandwich (though I'm not opening them to check).
@@DaimlerSleeveValve Thank you, I already thought something like that. Wonderful machines! Well, if there is asbestos in the sandwich, don't touch it!
Nice to see my 20/70 pictured! Plenty of other Daimlers I know too!
Hope I got the ID correct :-)
Timeline 12:30, to answer your question, it is a middle-nineteen-fifties, Daimler SPORTSMAN either a Regency or One-O-Four basis. Designated as a "Sportsman" by virtue of its "sporty" angeled boot lid. The 'ordinary" Regency or 104 had a rear 'rump' that was 'rounded.'
Excellent video yet again. My DREAM car would be a Regency, Majestic or Majestic Major. A friends Dad had all 3 versions when I was a boy - what a thrill it was to ride in any of them - so elegant.
I agree with Jay Leno- the Daimler Dart looks like a catfish. Great video as always!
Catfish or not - I personally love them!
Is the ultra-stylish green Daimler, (DLW) reg., one of the famous Lady Dockers Daimlers ? One had stripey zebra skin seats, gold instead of chrome trim, and DOUBLE GLAZING!
Personally, sir, I'm delighted you described the almost-black Daimler Dart as a fantastic looking car! I'd begun to think it was only myself who was a fan! They looked great in black as police cars, that really did look the business! (So did the imposing big black Wolseley police cars!)
@@nygelmiller5293 I personally like catfish.
@@nygelmiller5293 No, it's another one-off by Hooper. It was an idea supposedly to compete with the Bentley Continental. Fantastic beast! I know it well.
I have never liked the 'Dart' that body us just too Jarring for me. I did like all the others you featured though. My favourite of the more modern ones has to be the Sovrine Coupe, makes the car look longer than it is. Thanks for the collection. 👍
Love watching your videos. Just a slight correction though. 5.17 and 15.17 are actually Daimler Centurys. These always have the spot lights under the radiator and were from 1957 to 1958. Just sold my Century in New Zealand. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I did wonder about visible differences between Conquest and Century
Wonderful display of the Daimler and Lanchesters, thank you.
OCY 42 is a Daimler Regency One-o-Four Four-Light I beleive DF 310
Otherwise known as the "Sportsman" in contrast to the 104 "ladies model"
Great photographs, thank you. I've always liked Lanchesters and would love to drive one with the pre-selector gearboxes.
I agree Mike!
The unidentified Daimler in your video could be a Daimler Regency Sportsman from the mid-fifties. My grandfather owned one before his ultimate car, a Daimler Majestic Major.
The most impressive Daimler cars for me are the big sleeve valve edwardian and vintage Daimlers, for example the cars of king George V…
FPN 92 is indeed a Consort as is LXW 922, HKW 356. OCY 42 is definitely a Sportsman. Also, please write out 100 times "There is no such car as a Daimler Light 15" and see me in my study after prep............................................🙂
Thanks for the info
My dad bought a DE36 when I was a child, 1 of 4, we had it as a family car, big 5.5litre straight 8 and pre-selector transmission, reg no. ONW129, I know it made it into preservation but I’ve no idea where it is now, would love to see it again!
Sounds neat, there were a few huge Daimlers at the NEC show last weekend - look out for the upload tomorrow
@@oldclassiccarUK thanks for the heads up, I’ll be sure to have a look! 👍
Is there a physical difference between a cabriolet and a drophead coupe? I thought that they were different names for the same the same body type.
Hi, I'm sure there is a definition but right now it escapes me :)
@@oldclassiccarUK Doesn't the hood of a drop-head coupe disappear into the boot, whereas that of a cabriolet sits on top of the rear when folded?
Was there a Type 2 version also called a 'Sovereign'? I had a friend that owned one and he always said it was a Sovereign.
Daimler versions of Jaguars tended to be called Sovereign
My favourite is the Majestic Major, fitted with Edward TURNER'S beautiful 4,5 litre V8. I think Jaguar missed a golden opportunity by NOT fitting this engine into the Mk.9 body shell. I personally did not care for the Mk. 10 , but that's just my opinion. Thanks for the video !
They actually tried the V8 in a Jaguar bodyshell. It outperformed Jaguar's own unit. Because it was Not Invented Here it had to be killed off.
Great vid!!!!
12:30 1956 Daimler Conquest Century
OK so I googled it!
New subscriber, Vintage Car History channel gave you a shout out in a recent post.
Great, thanks for sub'ing
Everything but a DF310!
SP250 Daimlers own hemi v8 engine
That Majestic Major had ridiculous acceleration - one magazine timed its 0-60 at under 9.1 seconds. Your chauffeur would be very happy.
Bit of a hot rod in its day I suppose, very understated
Why do some of these look like jags?
Jaguar took over the Daimler business, after which Daimlers ended up being re-badged and slightly plusher versions of contemporary Jaguars
real cars not like the black box disasters today
No 420 sovereign !
True, I couldn't find a photo in my files of the 420 Sovereign
