  • I decided to give the all new and all mighty Ektachrome 100D / 7294 super 8 a shot. I've heard a lot of negative things about it but figured, nah, isolated incidents. Check out my experience...

    UPDATE: Since this video was posted, I have been in touch with a Kodak Quality Control Manager in the Chemicals Division. I am overjoyed at the level of customer service I have received from them in several email exchanges. These were not "canned" replies but personalized to my issue. Kodak is well aware of the issues with the new 100D carts and assure me that they're working on some new advances with them and have asked me to do some testing for them (which I graciously agreed). They also sent me 2 new Vision 3 50D carts (my request) as a replacement for the faulty 100D. I plan to continue the conversation with Kodak and will obviously never stop using their products...Thank you Kodak!

      I had enormous issues with this stock in the 10 or so rolls I’ve shot, and when I contacted Kodak they sent me 2 rolls of E100 in replacement.
      My initial rolls in 2020 were fine, but as I did more rolls I started seeing more and more issues until it got so bad that almost an entire roll was blurry (exactly like the shot shown at 10:56 in your video) and another didn’t run from the get go, at all. The blurriness is caused by the film not seating in the gate correctly and thus sits away from it a little making it look blurry towards the right side. I’ve since learnt at least not to hit the cartridges because that may make the situation worse and cause the film to be even more taught inside. When a cartridge jams, the best thing you can try is to pull some of the film out of the slot, and attempt to wind the film back in using the spindle. At that point you’ll be able to tell if it’s going to be a problematic cartridge or not, because it’ll either be easy to wind it back in or it’ll be very hard to.
      Unfortunately, I’ve tried to stay in contact with Kodak about the newer issues I’ve had but they stopped getting back to me entirely, so no more help for me on that side.

      @@therestorationofdrwho1865, fortunately, Kodak has been good with me thus far. The did say that the E100D reported issues were up slightly for this new(er) batch, so they are working on some fixes.
      Funny, Kodak told me exactly what you just said, don't bang on the carts. I guess I was hoping it would sort of loosen the tight wind, which I thought was "adhering" to itself for whatever reason. I guess this actually creates more problems. I'm going with your suggestion of pulling a bit out and winding back in from now on.
      This whole film thing is so incredibly hit & miss, just when you get comfortable...BOOM, issues!

      @@Filmboy24 Oh my f-- yes I know!!! I just got a roll back today that I filmed mid to late April, same f-ing problems again! Even after I tried messing around with the film gate a tad, the majority of the footage came out blurry still. That’s THREE whole rolls basically ruined for the most part, with VERY short sections being in focus. And these were the replacement rolls I got. I’m kicking myself for not asking for colour neg stock in replacement.......screwed up there bro. That’s my 10th and final roll, at least for a very long time until I see improvements. I would hope Kodak would be kind enough to send me a replacement roll after their new equipment has been put into service to see if it’s made any difference.

    That's sad. we used Ektachrome last year for a Super 8 workshop. We had 10 cartridges and they worked all really well without problems in different cameras. Braun Nizo, Minolta Autopak D10, Canon 510xl, Canon 1218, Yashica and interesting was that only a Canon 1014 auto zoom made problems. After we used the cartridge in another camera it worked fine, so we thought first the camera had a problem. We checked the camera changed the batteries and it worked later fine with a Trix cartridge. So we can't say anything bad about the film.

    Very informative, it is never a pleasant experience when things that are beyond your control begin to go wrong.
    I have shot two 50' rolls of regular8 and one cart of super8 last year. Although I was never a fan of Ektachrome, I decided to show the younger people what projecting a color home movie is like. I was actually pleased with the results, of course I got a reliable cart. It is pricey to purchase but I take into account that Dwayne's Photo in Parsons, KS will develop a roll for $12.00 and often return it the same week. I really liked my results, they came out good without really trying.
    That said, I don't think I will purchase another 100D super8 cartridge after watching this video, shame because this film calls for a 70's format look.
    I may continue to shoot the odd roll of regular 8 or 16mm depending, but thanks for letting us know and do tell us what Kodak says about this if you contact them.

    Now, some ten plus years ago, I resurrected my Super 8 filming hobby and at the time I was using the last of some Kodak 64 asa Ektachrome shared between two cameras a Minolta Autopak S6 and a Elmo 103. Both camera worked great being old enough to have a range of film speed settings. Enter 100D, my Minolta worked and jammed so I transfered it to the Elmo and it was fine. At the time I thought the Minolta to have a weaker film take up drive. It wasn't until I saw your video I now realise it may have been 100D issue. The other problem I have with 100D is that I have several later cameras with one asa switch in the film compartment switching between 40 asa and 160 asa with the filter out. To me this means the 100D does not match the speed settings of these cameras. The older Elmo and Minolta seemed to get the exposure just right for the 100D film. I have never tried 100D in the other cameras. I have watched your other videos, love them by the way, but it seems to me that I would be better off with Standard 8 or 16mm.

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks, John! You know, in many ways, I much prefer standard 8 over super 8. I love the ease of super 8 and the bit larger frame size but I think standard 8 cameras were built so much better (in general). Having something like a Bolex H8 and a 100' load, shooting at 16 FPS will literally give you almost 17 minutes of finished film (or over 11 minutes if you shoot at 24 FPS). That's simply hard to beat in my book.

    I haven't had any issues with it on my Canon 814 XL electronic, but I guess I was just lucky with the cartridges I received from Andec. I have to admit that I prefer reversal material over negative, because I only got chemicals for E6 at home and I am not interested in further digital processing. I know that most people shooting on Super 8 nowadays want digital footage in the end, but for me watching it on my Revue projector is just fine. I am also fine with the price as I only shoot special family events like birthdays, christmas or weddings on Super 8. In my opinion analogue photography is way superior to digital when it comes to long-term archiving and that is why I am using it. I wish there were more reversal film stocks available than Ektachrome or Tri-X, with different ASA speeds. I mean something like a 200 ASA colour reversal would be great.

    Sorry to hear your challenges with the film! I shoot stills film with old cameras and have experienced the failure of the old equipment, locked shutters...etc. film breakage etc. I know the frustrating feeling! I lost nearly 3 months of images once. Out of 4 rolls I have had maybe 1 1/2 rolls complete. I also shoot digital at the same time, so I end up having some sort of back up. Keep up the amazing work! 8mm and 16mm film is just so wonderful to watch.

      Thank you! Yes, it's a tough trade off sometimes, loving analog quality but using antiquated equipment. Funny, I've never once had any issues with Kodak's Vision stocks (old or new). Might be a thickness issue, color reversal vs negative. I know there was a little less than 50' on this roll (about 47-1/2'), which may be due to just that.

    I bought a new fresh roll of Ektachrome 100D, and it shot fine for about 25 feet, and then it began slowing down to a stop. I would turn off the power and turn it on. It would run a few feet then stop again. I thought it was the batteries, but they were new. I took it home in a dark room, put new batteries in it, and tapped the cartridge against a hard surface. It ran smooth for 10 feet and then it did it again. I was able to expose the roll. I thought it was the camera briefly, but the motor runs very well. I bought a restored expensive Canon 514XL. I had a bad experience with the last roll of Ektachrome 100D. Color negative stock runs fine through the camera, as well as Tri-X black ‘n’ white. Not a good experience.

I was a little let down because the color wasn't as bold as the original, but considering they had to reformulate it in the first place, I kinda expected that. @Filmboy24 That's good news indeed! Test rolls means they are working on the issue. I've shot about 7 carts of this new stuff and had 3 carts jam. But I love the colors and sharpness. I love color reversal projected as it looks amazing on a big screen in the living room. Friends and family are just amazed how nice this stock looks on the projector. The last cart of 7294 I shot on Memorial Day ran flawlessly through my Minolta Autopak 8 D6. I have noticed this stock needs a bit more light. I tend to expose it at 80 ASA instead of the box speed of 100. The colors and brightness just seem to look better that way. Keep us up to date on this latest fix for 7294. I hope Kodak is listening because if not the jamming issues could be the demise of this stock. I would be unhappy to see this disappear.

    Hey-o!
    I've been watching your videos from newest installations and back... so I just caught this one.
    This one reminds me of a Survivorman episode: you wandering around in the foliage and mulling over your situation while looking around.
    Surviving the Ektachrome experience... ha!
    I know we discussed the issues with some of the new Kodak S-8 cartridges jamming... my poor luck has been with Tri-X carts. But most of the time its solved by pulling out an inch or two of film, manually reeling it back in with take-up spindle, and shooting for another 10-20 seconds (before the next jam!).
    I've always double-checked the cartridge on another known working camera, and it is consistently the fault of the cartridge. (take out cart, try on new cam; immediately take another roll of un-jammed film and pop it in the camera that just had the issues - camera works fine and film spools through cam smoothly)
    Given the price we pay for the film stock, well, I hope they can remedy these issues! (although the tech is now about 60 years old - might have been solved by now... lol)
    Hope things are good, Mike!

      What you do by pulling the film a little, then winding it back in is certainly the best way to loosen everything up in there. I just decided to go full on Hulk Hogan with this one. I think I was just getting so frustrated with it. I've since been involved with Kodak and a E100D test program they're doing. I shot some revised carts of 100D that they sent me, all with varying results. I've been in pretty close contact with my Kodak rep, who's keeping me up on their progress/improvements. I think (hope) they're getting close.

    Even the out of focus and strange jumps of the jamming parts really have a very redeeming visual quality i must say. This is something that often doesn't even look this nice when you plan it or fake it in post. And now this really makes me think back when i shot a roll of the older Ektachrome 100D back in late 2011 / early 2012 and had these strange jams in my Nizo 1048 camera. I really thought it was because of the Camera since i didn't test any other roll of film in it. Just the Ektachrome. And now i wonder... if perhaps the camera was totally fine and i too just had the same kind of EktaJam in my camera. It was the roll i first had in my Bauer 107XL for the first few meters before i swapped the filmcartridge into the Nizo 1048. :O

      Funny that you mention the flashes with the K3, I didn't really notice them too bad last time I shot with it, but I did cover the footage counter with gaffer's tape. Coincidentally, I've held off modifying my current K3 to super 16 as I just ordered another one that's supposed to be "New" old stock. My current one is pretty rough, so, we shall see.

      I always wanted to shoot a piece in a retro film with Ektachrome. Like recreate a news story from the 70s. That would be fun.Hollywood seems to be using fake digital super 8 in their movies. The Fablemans was a disappointment, Spielberg went more for period romanticism than historical accuracy. @@Filmboy24

    Well we all know that Kodak is on life support and struggling, but they made some incredibly bad decisions over the last years. None of this is our fault. Back in the 1970s and early 80s I never had any trouble with Super 8 cartridges, so it should be possible to get to the same standard as 40 plus years ago. Kodak: please just go to online forums and ask the right people how it´s done!
    Well I would contact Kodak and complain. And I agree: if you are scanning anyway, the 50D is the very best choice. As always: thanks for sharing!

      Yes, I can't imagine what's so different now vs the 70s, 80s and early 90s. I never had anything like this happen back then either. I just emailed Kodak today, hoping they get back to me with at least an acknowledgement. We'll see.
      As always, thanks for commenting, I appreciate it!!

      Hey Asa King, no, I haven't yet filmed indoors with 100D. I have a couple rolls left, so I might just try it and see what happens.

    What do you color super 8 film do you recommend overall if I want to test out an old super 8 camera - best bang for your buck? And... are there any labs that still process super 8?

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 роки тому +1

      That's a great question. This Ektachrome 100D is a nice stock, with good colors and while I didn't have any luck with this particular roll, Kodak did get back to me and sent me 2 new Vision 3 50D carts (my favorite). They are aware of the issues and are working on them. With that, my favorite stock is Vision 3 50D Color Negative but just know that it processes as a negative, so it cannot be projected, only scanned. I has a ton of latitude, meaning it can be beautifully color graded to your liking, and can be shot in auto exposure in pretty much any old (good working) super 8 camera.
      I process and scan all of my own movie film, but there are plenty of reputable labs out there that do it professionally. Pro8mm, Film Photography Project, Dwayne's and Spectra are the first few that come to mind.
      Best of luck!!

    The trick is to beat the hell out of the cartridge before inseting it in the camera. This will take the fight out of it so it won't resist passing through its intended path.

    Why mess around with Super 8mm when your clearly have a Bolex H16 behind you. Shot around 30 100ft rolls 16mm with my bolex and and had no issues whatsoever.

    Bonjour
    La derniere fois que j' ai eu ce genre de probleme, il s' agissait en fait d' un probleme au niveau de la caméra. J' ai fait réparé ma caméra en Suisse, il y a une société qui peut les réparer. Recemment, j' ai tourné avec cette pellicule, et je n' ai eu aucun souci

    Thats so unfortunate considering this their big boy film stock considering it is more expensive to shoot and develop and scan it in most labs. Do you think this could had a been a problem with your role or a batch of roles. Never heard of this issue, is ektachrome jamming normal ? I am about to try but this is kinda discouraging....

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 роки тому +2

      Very unfortunate indeed, Jaro. I'm not sure if it's actually the "norm" for this stuff to jam up, however I have read about it on several occasions (FB Groups, etc.) doing just that. I did run about the last 5 feet of it through my Bolex 150 Super, and it also had a hard time with it. I'm sure there are many people that have had great luck with it, sadly, I'm not one of them. I'm really hopeful that it's something Kodak is aware of and can maybe dig a little deeper.

      @@Filmboy24 I agree hopefully you do a fallow up on what Kodak replies. Seems weird that Kodak hasn’t address this considering this was introduced back in 2018. I doubt its the film’s tightness because that shouldn’t be a problem as running Ecktachorme on a bolex h16 works fine. I might be they designed the cartridge for the mythical Hybrid Super 8 that they are in theory releasing, maybe that one has more torque power, if that was the case it would be unfortunate. I hope that if I ever do try it that isn’t the norm...

    • @Filmboy24
      @Filmboy24  3 роки тому +2

      @@GBJJ072 Yeah, I'm truly confused as to what it could be. I've also read that it could be poor lubrication, but again...no clue. I really do want to try 100D in 16mm format, I think that would run fine on a 100' spool. I'll definitely let you know what Kodak says if I get them involved.

    The contrast on this film stock is terrible! It is even more contrasty than the modern Kodachrome was. In fact, it looks like it has the contrast level of the Kodachrome from the 1940's but even more so! I think the only way get redeemable images from this film stock is to use it with overcast skies.
