Manchester United v Arsenal 1990-91
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2013
- On 20 October 1990 Arsenal travelled to Old Trafford to play Manchester United in the First Division of the Football League. Anders Limpar put Arsenal 1-0 up but the talking point of the game (and the season) was when Brian McClair gave Nigel Winterburn a good kicking as Winterburn was on the ground. This resulted in a mass brawl / a bit of handbags* which saw Arsenal deducted 2 points and United 1 point. Arsenal went on to win the League despite the points deduction.
Bad feelings amongst the clubs perpetuated for many years after this.
There is also a short interview with Lee Dixon at the end of the clip.
Let's all just be honest: on-pitch brawls are fuckin' brilliant. I love watching them break out.
Now all utd and Arsenal players are wimps.
Should be given extra points for games like this. ... other teams after this game had brawls and No points deducted. ...
Try and figure that one out?

RIP Les Sealy and David Rocastle
strange isn't it how sealy was holding rocastle back from fighting and both of them passed away young
@@ldanzamariastile3536 i didnt know the keeper died
@@mrl6863 yes sadly les sealy died 17 years ago
Wow, didn't even know that Les Sealey had passed away, even though it was "close to a lifetime" ago. And he was only a year older than I am now, when he died. So sad. RIP Les & Rocky
RIP Rocky, he was a good guy.
Miss those days. RIP David Rocastle.
+capokhatpin sad seeing him and sealy together like that seeing as both of them are no longer with us and both of them died the same year 10 yrs after this match
Proper football here. None of today’s crap. Atmosphere, terraces, tackling. No play acting or ponces on 200 grand a week.
Okay Grandad.
Agreed. And also the football was actually very technical, tactically astute and fast paced. Many modern fans just call it hoof ball when there was a lot more going on.
How good was football in these days ? A simple game , all 3pm kick offs , characters in each team , real players , real loyal players .
No Sky biased towards teams . No high inflated wages , no over hyped players .
Love Georgie Graham , the tough Scot who installed what it meant to play for The Arsenal.
Georgie Graham is the foundation to which The Emirates is built on , not Arsene Wenger but Georgie Graham.
Thank you Stroller Graham .
The foundation maker to the Arsenal that is today .
Bertie Bert 100%
shame he betrayed us and ruined his legacy
@Mad Man 1 United, Liverpool and Spurs. You can tell by the way they employ pundits mainly from those teams. I.e. Neville/Keane, Carragher/McManaman and Jermaine Jenas.
Boring, boring Arsenal! That's what Graham was. And you could heard it in whole England!
@@bakaweiner6956 yeah... can't remember how many european cups did you have? could you remind me?
1:32 it's hard to think both those players have passed away.
Its mind bogglin
May they rip, Just finished Wright and rocky documentary heartbreaking ,for his family and friends.
ROCKY - what a legend
love the passion. Need more of that these days. It doesent help that everything players do is under the microscope which in turn has generated robots who say the right things, do the right things and so there's no characters.
Love the goal celebrations in the away end
Absolutely amazing
No yellow cards for utd
@@rahman5541 let's be honest, you weren't there were you....
Graham’s best arsenal team was the 90-91 title winners. The almost invisibles! We even had 2 points deducted after this game but still went on to win the league title.
And only missed out going invincible losing to Chelsea
@@malsmith1618 Screw those bastards. I knew there was more to the Chelsea-Arsenal rivalry
Yeah we only lost one league game that season to Chelsea. Graham's Arsenal team of the late 80's early 90's is probably one of the most underrated English teams ever.
@@shellsbignumber2very very true, especially the 1991 one
@@shellsbignumber2 have a watch also for the 1986- 88 teams.
Aaaaaaaahhh those were the days!
It was handbags, amazing they were points deducted for that.
@Boris The Blade Man Utd rules. Facts are facts
Arsenal were involved in a brawl, 2 years before that I think against Norwich. This is why they had a 2 point deduction, and United only 1.
Fucking loved that Arsenal kit
I'm a Liverpool fan, but one of the things I like about Arsenal is that the players have always stood up for themselves. There's no way to beat a Ferguson team by being "nice". A red card here or there to tell others you aren't intimidated by them goes a long way..
That was a truly horrible tackle by the Arsenal player. He went into try and hurt that player. His feet were of the ground. Even back then that was considered disgusting. McClair should not have kicked him but neither should that tackle have been made.
@arsenal0782 pretty sure being a United fan these days is worse mate. Your two rivals challenging for the title. At least Tottenham isn't doing well so y'all atleast have that.
Are you joking? They’ve been the softest cunts in the league for the last 2 decades.
Don't be ridiculous, it wasn't that bad. However, you seriously think the Manc players kicking someone whilst they're on the ground was okay?!
Pack that nonsense in.
Anders Limpar is the reason I started supporting Arsenal COYG
What cause ure a coward and like attacking ppl from behind ...fair enough 😅
I don't know how both teams got fined and points deducted for this, nothing bad really happened, considering this was in an era when football was still regarded as a 'man's game'
Love how it was only yellow cards
Lee Dixon, Brilliant lad
I remember the re-match at Highbury. We had won the league earlier in the day as Liverpool drew at Forrest. We told the FA where to stick their 2 points.
I was a junior gunner at the rematch at Highbury. Great times.
Absolutely no punishment for Man U or any of their players?
Sounds about right 😉
They were deducted a point. Which was half the gunners. The press went all out for the Arsenal players, including the the ITV pundits.
not an arsenal fan but that was probably dave seamans best season of his entire career .
Seaman was incredibly overrated
I agree. He was superb that season. From the late 80th to 1996, he was superb. Forget the fluke saragossa goal . It will always be a fluke. But after his injury in late 97 early 98 he lost a lot of his abilities. Wengers first and one of his bigger mistakes was to drob Manninger in 1998 after the league win and to reinstall Seaman.
First game my Dad took me to aged 9, and we lost! The brawl happened right in front of me too
The war between them began so long ago😉...rest in eternal love and peace David
30 years on . . . Boy I miss watching the game at the stadium!
Lost 2 characters of the games since then, Les Sealey & David Rocastle, ironically one calming down the other to the end of the fracas. RIP fellas
Super super swede super super swede super super swede super Anders Limpar
Was in the away end that day great times EIE
How Arsenal were deemed the guilty party I'll never understand, the state of Mc Clair and co kicking Winterburn on the ground is arguably the worst thing to happen on a football pitch since Bloody Sunday
haha
That’s was a nasty challenge from Winterburn though, even for 1990s standards.
Well McClair wasn't such a bad man when Limpar smacked him and when Michael Thomas stepped to him.
A leg breaking tackle kinda set it off then the cowardly attack on McClair from Limpar ..
For doing a horrible dirty challenge. The United players should have stepped on his head
Was there with me dad and gf at the time, always feisty between McClair & Winterburn, if only we kept Big Norm & Mcgrath, would've caused even more mayhem
So began the greatest football rivalry of all time. Pivotal.
It was a great rivalry in the late 90's, but it does not compare to United and Liverpool
The rivalry started in 1987.
@@JH-sj1difrom early 80th to nowadays
@@chrisdouglas2394brian mcclair? 😂😂
Arsenal had two points deducted because of the brawl, Man Utd had one point also.
I don't think this has happened since but they're not as strict now on rivalry/derby skirmishes like they were before the Premier League.
Ah man, it's like a million years ago to how the game is now. Not a critique, it's just different.
Football, back in the day, was absolutely epic.
How many watching this after McClain podcast at full time devil
well said Lee Dixon at the end..
This was proper football of the yester-decades.. Not the shite, overpaid, wannabe oscar winning, ponses you have today... RIP David Rocastle and Les Sealey
This game in this video might be on a bigger scale, but watching this reminds me of when I watched the Holland v Argentina game in the world cup
I was at that game and remember it very well, I really thought some fans were gonna run on the pitch was chaos
Was chaos outside especially at the coach park EIE
Ferguson always admired Tony Adams and why he seeked out him to calm it down. Adams should of been a Manchester United player but he wasn't as good as Bruce or Pallister by quite a bit
Haha😂😂😂 .... Wait, you were being serious?
I saw him interviewed and Choccy himself is not sure how he didn't get sent off...and he was never sent off in his career.
“Second half brawl”
Few players pushing eachother 🤣
Guess you didn't see Anders Limpar smack Brian McClair in the face then
@@zw_ncfc of course. That image has stuck in my mind for years. But still not a brawl. It had potential to really kick off but it was mostly argey bargey and players stopping it from escalating
@@dazza944 I clicked onto it expecting fists flying. Not a single punch 😂 They were deducted points for this? I think football from this era has an overhyped reputation for being a hard game. Much harder than today’s game but let’s face it that wouldn’t be hard
THE GOOD OLD DAYS
I remembered this being a huge fight but it's just a bit of pushing for 3 seconds and that's it.
Arsenal 2 points deducted, still won the league..
I remember being about 9 years old reading about this on the back page of my dad's copy of The Sun then waiting for Shoot! magazine to come out which had the sanitised version xD
i miss football
Why did Arsenal get 2 points deducted and United only 1??
That doesn't seem like a serious brawl to me. Why were points deducted for that one in particular?
now we've got Odegaard and Smith-Rowe adjusting their quiffs all the time
That United kit was a thing of beauty
Legendary
If that was Neymar being kicked the guys kicking him would of been sentence to life for brutal murder.
No wonder the breakaway happened 1 year's later after the points deductions
Fair play for Tony Adams for trying to break things up.
Professional amnesia....
It was a bad tackle initially. In those days, the only guys to regulate bad tackles were players who knew what a serious injury meant. So thing's escalated quickly I guess.
Looks like two United players kicked Winterburn when he was on the ground - which ultimately started the brawl. Yet Arsenal were deducted more points?
One thing is for sure, George Graham's players at Arsenal were toughnuts as that's because of his intense training methods and no nonsense attitude. Something that's being mirrored by Mikel Arteta now.
Exactly what Ferguson wanted
Confrontational Football
Oh the days before football went corporate....love it. Away end mental in those days as well, good following the Gooners had before the Yuppies showed up.
Gary Imlach!

I was right in front of it all
Cowardly of Mc Clair to kick winterburn while he is lying on the ground, still he paid the penalty for it later ;
)
yeah, well said.
The guy that was on the ground just made a disgusting tackle even for that era. It was not that he when in hard it was he went in with both feet of the gound.
He deserved it, winterburn is a pussy
@Santos Lewynn he went 2 footed above his ankle not for the ball, if he connected with his leg he would have ended his career, he deserved every kick he got... he didn't do it again.
@Santos Lewynn listen you bollix, it was a leg breaker tackle and he deserved every kick he got

the gaffer at 01:16
We won at least
Don't see stuff like this these days
Proper ruck
I see a ManU player kicking an Arsenal player whilst he's on the ground? FA deduct 2 points from Arsenal?????
They got docked points for that 😳 I thought men were men back in the day 🤷♂️
Also, an Arsenal team with some fight in it, those really were different times.
Arsenal are historically known for being a tough team it was only when Wenger came he changed everything.
@@ky9319 They still had a toughness about them in the early years. Remember the sequel to this fight 13 years later?
I wasn’t even that bad to warrant what punishment that was given. There was a little something else going on behind the scenes that the fa wanted putting to bed. But that’s another story
Karl pilkinton 😲
_"We won 1-0"_ lol get the champagne out... they have never beaten us *8-2* have they!
Mad that Arsenal were deducted more points for this "brawl" when it really was just two united cowards kicking a player on the floor. But hey, their influence in the FA that fucked over so many teams finally paid off when they spent over 1bn and won no english league titles.
Absolute travesty it was!
Hello
JVC product was not so SHARP those days..
Hence the bad behavior to make up..
The limbs in the away end are incredible
Brawl?! Hardly, proper handbags stuff! Wasn't a goal either!
it was a goal cos it counted... was you on the goal line ? the only people who matter were the ref and linesman and they gave it as a goal.....Tottenham scored from the half way line against you... we all clearly saw it go over the line by a metre but its down as a shot only cos a goal wasn't given.... so who gives a fuck ?? we beat you that day and took the piss and won the league easily
I say it was a goal, the goal keep hands were well over the line.
Is that it? 😂
Clearly not over the line even though the referee was in a great position.
As for winterburn, he's always been a snidey fucking weasel
Limpar was a lovely little player. Ahead of his time at Arsenal.
Wanker
It was . I sneaked into the Manchester United cage next to the Arsenal fans and was looking right along the goal line.
It was a goal. Even Ferguson himself admitted that
Who else thought the number 4 was Patrick Vieira for a second?
errrrr...... no.
Michael Thomas
Dude no...

So racist and predjudice punishing all those Arsenal players. Mcclair should have been sent off for kicking Winterburn on the ground.. Racist FA fining the Arsenal players...so nasty. Shame on them!
Racist????WTF??
Arsenal are a different race to everyone else?
Hang on, you're right. I've always hated Arsenal all my life, haven't a reason why but now it's come to me why.....
The fans.
Every arsenal fan I've ever met has been an unjustified arrogant cunt....
@@Sidneyyoungblood75 Come on Steven most Arsenal fans are decent compared to all the other teams you may know. Yes some can be arrogant but Man Utd fans are worse overall but not as Bad as teams such as Chelsea or Millwall.
I like to keep an open mind but my point was that Arsenal have always had a higher number of Black ethnic and irish players over the years and this played a part in the FA's prejudice to punish Arsenal for what happened in this game compared to Man Utd.
If not please explain why Arsenal got the harsh end of the stick when it was Brian Mcclair who started the brawl by kicking Nigel Winterburn on the ground after the tackle??
