THAT is a TON of jam! hahaha I would have never thought to cook up plums with the skins! I am going to give this a try..... keep my eye balls out for sales on plums! by the way, i share you on The Kneady Homesteader facebook page all the time. hahaha
Harlandale thanks for your video of about to try to can 38 lb are plums I heard you mention blessing a few times and sounds like your Christian I hope you are it be awesome to meet up with you someday in heaven so thanks for your hard work
Hi Linda, Just love your video's and I wanted to leave you a little tip since you share so much. When your cutting up things like the plums with a sharp knife stick a thimble on your thumb and no more surface cuts to those hard working fingers :)
Here on UTube, RoseRed Homestead.....she has a great process of using a mixer to make it easier to process the plums. Check it out!!! Only if you are interested.
I should have mentioned I made plum jam using your method, and it was the best jam I think I've ever had. I kept the skins on and chopped them up. Wonderful. Thanks for the vid!
If you cut the plums in small batched and add sugar, place in fridge overnight the way you would do with strawberries, then simply place in pot the next day and simmer until it reduces and do it in small batches, you won't have the extra water. Just don't add water. Just cut the plums and add sugar as you would do for strawberries and let them sit in fridge overnight. Don't add any water and you won't need the pectin. That's the problem
Linda, I discovered it was not a cherry tree I found on the roadside. It was a wild Cherry Plum tree. So I am going to follow your instructions on what to do. Thanks. Jerry of Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.
Looks great! I have a few full size plum trees that probably produce 500+ plums each. We eat them as fast as we can but they all come ripe at the same time. I am definitely going to try this in a few months when they are ready. We have blackberries in every creek and roadside brambles everywhere so I'll be trying my hand at that as well. I'll be trying apricot this year also now that my apricot and pluot trees are producing as well. Strawberries from the garden too.
Hi Linda, Great video. I thought I had every gadget for canning but then saw that wide red scoop you used to scoop up the chopped plums. That's a great idea. Can you tell me who makes it and where I can get one? My neighbor sells produce but give us all his seconds and stuff he can not sell-for FREE. Gave us two 1/2 bushels of 2 types of plums today which I am going to can. Thanks again for a great video. Look forward to hearing from you about the scoop.
My wife just made 12 jars of homemade plum jam and 5 gallons of plum wine. Man she shredded her hands, ruined her nails and stained her nails too. I offered to help her but it took me ten minutes to prepare three plums lol. She was in despair and told me to leave it to her. Wine won’t be ready for a long old time as it’s chemical free, with no finings. Takes much longer to clear. The jam is delicious and my wife took great pride in giving a jar to neighbours, friends and family. I feel for you cause watching my wife made me realise how hard canning and all that is.
Hi Linda ! Well I just finished making my Strawberry Jam, and it turned out Beautiful. I just Finished watching your Video on Plum Jam, now I am off to do that. Thank you so much for Inspiring me, and I Just Love how you even Laugh during your video, as it makes me smile and Laugh. So Glad to have you here to watch. GOD BLESS !
It seems easy Linda. Do you have a small batch recipe you can pm to me? As in ratio if sugar, water and or pectin to fruit? I'd like to start with strawberry jam.
Normally, I stay away from YT videos longer than 10 minutes because some people just seem to talk and talk and talk... but you have such a pleasant personality that I could watch your videos all day. Thanks for the wonderful video. Now, I'm off to watch your other videos.
When your doing a big batch like that at once, do you have a hard time getting the last of the jam in the jars as the jam is cooling and thickening? I did 3 batches of strawberry jam last night and cooked each batch separately and I put each batch in the canner because it was setting by the time I would fill the last couple of jars
Just thought of something...I read at one time of a recipe called pear honey that made use of the skins and cores of the pear harvest and processed them down with sugar to get something that they called pear honey. Sounds like ever such a frugal practice with a lovely sweet reward at the end. Have you ever come across such a thing?
I just canned 18 pints of red plums and I have another 18 to go another day. I canned 9 jars of nectarines and have 20# to go. This 10 year old video popped up @Linda's Pantry. They are listening all the time ❤️🙏🌞👍
You don’t need really need that much of sugar, white sugar is not healthy . Make it with monk fruit sugar which I used more that plumb you add but only 5 large spoon ,it’s too sweet .
Those jars are beautiful! My mother-in-law has plum trees, but the plums are only marble sized, would they work? She won't use them and we hate to see them go to waste! Love your videos!
I pitted my plums, cooked them till tender, ran them through a food mill, put them in a pot with half the recommended amount of sugar, brought them to a boil and simmered them till they were reduced by half. I put the 7 pint jars in the freezer but you can do a wax seal. While the jam simmers keep tasting and add sugar if you think it needs it. I don't use pectin.
Thanks Linda, I love to watch your video's making some fantastic stuff but this Plum Jam, is one I am most certainly going to try and make, only not such a huge amount (-: thanks again. X
Am so glad MistyPrepper shared this UA-cam link as we love plums and I LOVE clean kitchens like yours where you handle food well and keep things clean.
Looks delicious...as does all of your canning projects, Linda. You are a natural in the kitchen and a wonderful instructor. Love your gorgeous top. You look like a model in it. Hope your holiday exceeds your expectations, Linda. Blessings of peace and joy this season.of hustle and bustle. jo
Hello Linda I made this jam today turned out great. I have made jams in the pass just not plum jam. My husband loves plum jam. He said never will he buy it in the grocery store again.
I been loving your channel for a long time You and katzcradul are my ABSOLUTE FAVES! Keep up the good work I'm a dehydrating Mama thanks to you Linda. I just finished making the Plum syrup and jelly videos but used peaches instead. I watched them while I cooked and I'm done you are so precise your voice is pleasant I always pray before I start and I cant go wrong following your lead!
Hi I am on a little budget and I am wondering can I use old jam jars with there original lids they come with like all the supermarket jars we throw away can I use them rather then buying jam jars as I got a bottle bank near buy as fruit season is here and I got the kids on the fruit picking looking to make a bit of money on the car booty fruit for free jars for free just need to know if the lids are cool to use again as im going to work these kids at the picking lol
Ten Pound, Be very cautious about using commercial jars that aren't meant for canning. You may be able to use them for freezer jams, and perhaps if you are making jam that you properly process and seal with the wax method, but double-check this. Otherwise it's not worth the risk. But, you can often find good deals on canning supplies on Craigslist or the classifieds :)
I just got a big box of plums so I needed ideas so of course I check your channel and here is your video you made on this date 8 years ago. Retro Linda, I love it.
hi ... thank you for your vids, I have 12 children and homeschool, we are currently setting up a facebook page titled "our kids can cook & budget" and your vid's are great motivation for us (well me to motivate them anyhow) so again thank you and I look forward to watching more of your vids and learning new things.
I watch everything you do and I love your creativity and your willingness to try. This plum jam looks wonderful. How do you find the time to do everything you do? Amazing!
Oh my goodness what a lot of work and sugar!!! Recently I picked 30 lbs plums from my neighbors tree. After washing n putting them in a big stockpot...covered them in water simmered for 30 minutes...took off most of the liquid put in fridge made great red juice!! Pureed the rest..skins on..NO SUGAR or anything else added... put into canning jars...tastes fabulous!!
looks like the skins floated to the top. do you ever turn the jar upside down after 12 hours to redistribute? what about a blender to incorporate the skins with the flesh of the plums? looks good, I know how much work it is!!
yum this looks wonderful we always get tons of plums - I have canned a few times with my husband but I want to be able to can all by myself. Is it true that canning lids are only good for a year now?
I’m brand new to canning and have never done it before but would like to start. Someone recommended your channel to me. When you say to look at the ball book which one do you mean?
First time watcher... We moved to the Midwest last year and I'm committed to canning whatever I grow or am gifted this year! Most recent adventure was canning a 40 pound gift of beets! Next up, the plums on our two plum trees...the branches are so heavy that they are touching the ground. Thanks, Linda, loved this video and just subscribed.
Have you ever done Chinese Plum sauce before?? Just a thought if you have a bud who has extra plums to give, that might be a fun thing if you guys like Chinese food, and it would make a great Christmas gift as well!
I use my All-American canner to cook my jam and preserves in. It's a nice and thick BIG pot that doesn't let the sugar burn as it boils. Just leave off the lid and cook.
Where is my post from yesterday....well, my jam has not set and I'm thinking that 2 cups of water is just too much in the plum jam recipe. Does anyone have other suggestions about this recipe? Thanks
Linda, I love watching your channel!! I have come into a bushel of free plums as well as SEVERAL bushels of apples and pears. My Sister in Law has fruit trees. Can you give me some other ideas for the plums? I have lots of plans for the apples and pears. But, I work 50 -60 hours a week and I will have to act fast so that nothing spoils! I am feeling very overwhelmingly blessed!!
My gosh those look so good! I would love to make some but no one around here wants to give away any fruit. And I can understand that! Jobs are hard to come by and people are just trying to survive by selling everything they can. If I get any pecans this year I may try selling them! LOL
Thank you Linda, I have learned so much by watching your videos. I have a ton of plums that have been in the freezer and now it is time to take them out to make my Christmas gifts. I am a little concerned because they have a lot of juice now that they have defrosted, but I am going to follow your directions and hope for the best. Thank you so much. P.S. The one problem I always have is trying to figure out the canning time for my altitude of 5,656 ft., I think I have it down pat to add 10 minutes to the recommended canning time for Water-bath. P.S.S.. (Next project: Chicken recipes..Yay.!! My first time for chicken/my second time for meat.. I followed your recipe for Roast and OMG it is fantastic. My husband is now a believer...lol ) If you have any advice for me, please let me know. Blessing to you, your husband and all your beautiful pupper-do's. ~SuzyJCinColorado~
Linda, I always look to you for canning ideas. And I’m so glad I ran across this one from 11 years ago. Your show is always been inspiring and motivating and I just want to say thank you
Great tutorial. I find that just throwing the plums seeds and all into the pot saves loads of time and saves lots of the meat that attaches to the seeds. Cook em down, let them cool, run them thru the food processor and strain out the seeds and put it back in the pot and bring it back to boil and jar it up!! All i throw out is the seeds and a bit of the skins that didn’t cook down
Hi Linda, I've been watching you for a few yrs now. enjoy all your video's. you mentioned that you sell your jellies at work. Can I ask you how much you sell them for? I'm looking for a way to make extra income. I would really like to know how much you get for your wonderful jam. Thank you!
my mouth is watering watching you cut them up. I haven't had plum jam for a couple years. LOL, Good thing I know of someone that has a tree. I agree each year seems to be good for some things and not others. Very wise to stock up a year or two ahead.
If you add the plum stones in the cooking fruit, they have pectin in them, then scoop the stones off the top as they will float..
I put my stones in a separate sause pan with a bit of water, is this ok to do..how long do I boil it?
WHAAAAT?! Bertie you just saved me so much time!
I also use the stones, I tie them up in a muslin cloth and place it in my pan while cooking the plums, As Burtie says they contain the pectin.
This is weird. 10 years ago you posted this video, here I am, making plum jam on Labor Day weekend.
Have to reply....... it's a month later from your comment.... I'm working on the jam also.
THAT is a TON of jam! hahaha I would have never thought to cook up plums with the skins! I am going to give this a try..... keep my eye balls out for sales on plums!
by the way, i share you on The Kneady Homesteader facebook page all the time. hahaha
Oh I need to go visit your Facebook page and this plum jam is so delicious you will love it

Jerry of Pine Meadows Hobby Farm.
We have a cherry plum near us. It makes the most delicious syrup ever. A wonderful sweet/sour flavor.

Canning is such hard work Linda..... OMG! It takes so much time just to chop, clean, sterilize, cook & grow!!!! God bless you for it!
Hi Linda, Great video. I thought I had every gadget for canning but then saw that wide red scoop you used to scoop up the chopped plums. That's a great idea. I wish I had help everyone says they want to but when you ask they are always busy:)
And trust me you would go home a happy camper :)
Do you do anything with the seed scrapes? I'd boil them to get juice, at least I think that would work.
My wife just made 12 jars of homemade plum jam and 5 gallons of plum wine. Man she shredded her hands, ruined her nails and stained her nails too. I am watching this about 10 years after you posted it! What a beautiful jam session. Mine turned out just as beautiful!
I am too, just going to attempt this recipe with dried plums :)
220 is setting temperature for jam. I like mine a little loose so go about 118. pectin free.
GOD BLESS !
Looks absolutely beautiful, but I wouldn't even use 1/2 the amount of sugar :)
Go to the Ball canning book Girl that is where all my recipes stem from:)
It seems easy Linda. Do you have a small batch recipe you can pm to me? As in ratio if sugar, water and or pectin to fruit? I'd like to start with strawberry jam.

Anyone with digestive problems should can their own food. It's the best tonic for your system.
Thank you I will check that out:)

Are they sand plums?
just finished my Plum Jam extravaganza!!! I made Plum jam w/cinnamon, w/allspice, plain and plum butter! they all were different and very good!

Wow:)
Yum:)
Wow I here you:)
my mouth is watering watching you cut them up. I haven't had plum jam for a couple years. LOL, Good thing I know of someone that has a tree.
I agree each year seems to be good for some things and not others. Very wise to stock up a year or two ahead.
Linda, Where did you get that red scraper/scoop? I love it! Thanks for another great video. I am buried in Green Gage and wild plums.
A favourite, ...loved your canning videos. I am going to makes some plum jam....yummo!
Ask them if you can have them and make them some jam:)
