And also why an iPad Pro (usbc) doesn't power it unless I'm using a usb hub (not externally powered) ?

I've been using SATA HDD and SSD for some time. decided to upgrade to gen 2 speed. after doing research and thanks to this vid I ended up with the T7 touch. I'll be using this one for my most sensitive files so security is of utmost importance. like that it's future proof with gen2 interface and B&H currently has a crazy sale with extra coupon that brings the price down to $119. might not be fast as the X5 but I feel X5 might be too much speed for my current use and not worth the extra cost. I'm not a power user. Anyway, thanks for the vid. cleared up a lot of questions I've had and made my buying decision easier. keep up the good work!

Hello...I just got the SAMSUNG PORTABLE SSD T7...not the touch. I was wondering, this is gonna be my first time setting it up. Do I have to set it up through laptop or computer or can I set it up straight on my NOTE 9? Great video.

Just got a non-Touch 1TB variant, and like some of the Amazon reviews notes -- mine gets pretty hot after continuous use .
I've started to look at past video reviews of the product, and I'm surprised that none so far mentioned the heat issue , although I've found at least one text review that mentioned not only the heat, but the drop in preference (a safety feature) that showed up in extensive use .
This reviewer mentioned the heat preference for this drive (0-70 C°) , and Amazon has pics of it being clocked at 70C° to 100C° .
I suspect that this is either a feature (using the aluminum cover as a heat sink) , or a bug (something is touching something else that it shouldn't) .
Considering that SSD's tend to get hot in desktop computers, I'm tempted to think that the heat is unavailable . However, as I'm thinking about purchasing a 2TB version , I'm contemplating going for the older / slower T5 variant , as I've not found reports of heat issues with that one , and it's still plenty fast for my needs .
So what is the difference between T7 and T7 Touch? Just the fingerprint?

good video, im getting the 1tb one to replace the external ssd i have my os installed on, plus a 2 tb ssd (crucial x6) for my kontakt libraries. i only use the internal imac hdd for balast now lol
When trying to install the t7 on Mac Book Pro M1 got a “Disconnected”. message. In looking at the forums and videos on You Tube found this is, and was, a problem on the T5 as well. Would have appreciated a short description of actually installing the T7. Still isn’t working and will probably return.

Agreed. Disappointed speed writing large amount of data. It throttles a lot anywhere from 150 MB/s down to 50 MB/s.

So I have a 2019 iMac with a 1 TB SSD. My 4 TB external HDD I use for backups (with Time Machine) makes a lot of noise. Not just once every hour, but throughout. It also pops on when opening certain apps or files on my internal SSD. Don't ask me why.
So I'm considering replacing that HDD with a 2 TB external SSD for backups of my iMac. Is that a good idea in the first place? And if so, which one do should I choose? I'm thinking of either the Samsung T5 or T7. I'm not a video editor or anything!

That is decent speeds for an external in this price range. Did you use Crystal Diskmark for your test suite ?
It says in the graphs. A combination of ATTO, PC Mark 8 and good old fashioned folder copies :)

are you able to create a larger, unencrypted partition while still keeping the secure partition locked? i.e - the ability to use a portion of the drive like a normal usb disk while the rest of it is only accessible when unlocked?
I don't know actually. I'd have to look into it but it's been a bit busy :)

If i am dealing with thousands of small sized files (less than 5 MB each), should I go for T5 or T7? I mean which is better in terms of consistent transfer speed without being throttled by the large number of files.

large file and many file small files both are different in size.
T7 for many small files and Sandik Extreme Pro for Large files
PC Mark 8 - T7 result is rather disappointing. Enclosure too small for adequate cooling? Finger print internals blocking heat dissipation?
Don't think so, it doesn't get warm. T5 is also very similar in design and does better. Poked Samsung about it, will update when I know more.
May be a dumb question but is this SSD compatible with the PS4
If wanting to access my files from this SSD on someone else's PC/Mac, I do not need to download Samsung software on theirs? Just plug in, fingerprint/pw, and can instantly read/write?

I find it hard to believe t5 faster than t7? I watched video elsewhere saying t7 is faster than t5? Whatever the case I'm happy with this

Nice Hardware, but BEWARE - You’ll probably install SPYWARE too!
I bought this device and it’s pretty neat hardware. Be aware, however, that using the headline feature of this device - the fingerprint scanner - requires you to install bloat- / spyware from Samsung on your system.
The actual application, once installed, will allow you to set up the security and to configure your password and fingerprints. What you won’t necessarily realise, unless you pay close attention during the installation process, is that it will also install a deamon that permanently runs in the background of your system (starting up automatically whenever you reboot the system). Not only does this eat up a bit of system ressources and battery (a small amount per deamon, but it adds up);
This deamon also monitors your activity and reports data about your system, your address, your language settings and your usage back to Samsung's servers. From there it’s shared with unidentified 3rd parties (as laid out in the license agreement that you will hastily accept when eager to use your new device).
This monitoring and the data transfer have absolutely no functional justification whatsoever. It does not provide you with any benefit or additional features. You cannot opt out of this, if you want to use the security features of the device, and it’s sufficiently sneaky for most people to be unaware of it. In my book, for all intents and purposes, this is SPYWARE. Of course no uninstall app is provided, leaving you to painstakingly identify all relevant files in the depths of the system folders of your MacOS or Windows and to delete them manually one by one (so let’s call the whole thing bloatware as well).
Not only is this COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE for a nearly £500 / EUR500 / $500 device, it is also really rude to not make this very clear to customers before they purchase a device. Once you own it, there is no way around it, if you want to use the advertised features.
Come on Samsung ! Really? I for one will not buy another one of these (otherwise lovely) devices, unless Samsung come to their senses and stop sneaking such stuff in under the radar!

Unless it's a crazy amount of files, get whichever of the better drives is priced nicely in your region (T5, T7, both sandisks, ESD350C. Others may be worth it too if cheap enough)

I waiting for a price drop SSD still out of range and 2TB too small storage. I using the Western Digital Black Gaming 8TB external and well my steam library is pretty big. External Western Digital Black Gaming is not bad on performance in gaming. I not so worry about moving parts because I put my drive on a flat table. Hard Drive today are very fast with 256mb cache and Holds over 10TB of storage! With in mind I treat every PC hardware with care! I really don't see the logic of throwing it or dropping it on the floor for fun! Important is the fail rate of the storage drive. If hard drive today fail rate is very small and last long time and it come in huge storage space I buy it over the still expensive SSD. And games today are very large files download.

Don't use a hub, those hub chips lose a lot of performance usually. Not a problem for charging stuff, or simple USB sticks, but not ideal for SSDs.
On amazon under specs it says it’s USB 3.1 - is It def USB 3.2?
USB naming is a complete mess. It's USB 3.2 Gen 2, but that used to be called USB 3.1.....once. It's the 10 Gigabit USB type anyway, in case they rename it to USB 3.3 Gen X tomorrow. 😉
I get transfer rate 257Mb per sec on macbook pro and 255 Mb per sec on windows gaming desktop. Old T5 version provides more than 650Mb per sec! New T7 is much slower and after 15 mins go to sleep mode (even when I working with files). I never expected what samsung will make such "upgrade" of almost excellent T5 ssd series. Where 1050 mb per sec - dear samsung????
One thing people seem to miss is the fact that the T7 doesn’t have a dram chip whereas the T5 does
What is a dram chip?
@@pascual4764 it’s a small chip that stores the map of the drive which helps with speeds and longevity. Without it, the map instead gets stored directly onto the nand flash.

Why do people still in 2023 talk about SSD as if they just arrived, and that it's better than hard drives, for Pete's sake, those things have been on the market for a very long time already.
You'd be surprised, many people still don't look beyond GB/$
Perhaps because there a little more affordable hence more available to the average buyer.
I had this. It was buggy and unreliable. I was forced to return it and make do with my Dell XPS's internal SSD.
