    In the 2003/04 season we had a dumping of 1.4m over night. The mountain had to close early due to people getting buried skiing on the Blue runs. That was an epic day as well! Thank You for a great video and thanks for bringing back great memories once again! I will always consider Whistler "Home". Oh! We were allowed to ride chairs alone back then :)

      I lived there that year and remember that time as well ! You could not ski blue runs as the snow was too deep. Saw insane things day everyone jumped off everything . Saw a guy that day dropped and went into the snow and disappeared I was on the lift , we skied down and dug him out he was buried and could not move . Good times . 😊

      Is it good yes, best in the world, pretty far from. Better snow in Japan by a long shot, better mountains and lines in the Alps, longer season in Scandinavia etc. I have been around most places in the world and so far Canada, despite being good and having really n CE peoole, is taking last place. Most of my friends who have been have also been disapointed.
      Sure this is nice skiing but its knee deep.

    Last three days have been nuts: As deep as Wednesday and Thursday have been, I actually think that the overall best skiing has been today (Friday).
    Thursday was "pick an alpine chair and pitch a tent" day. Hit some morning laps, and then find a chair to wait to open. We picked Harmony and waited a LONG time for it to finally open around 1pm. But we were also about chair 30 going up and this meant a pretty much untracked run down Harmony bowl followed by an mostly untracked run down Sun bowl. Blackcomb campers won though with Glacier and 7th opening up an hour earlier around noon.
    Friday AM - it dumped another 20-30cm Thursday eve to Friday morning. I think the snowpack was the most mature today. For sure the fresh snow was deepest on Wed and Thurs, but Friday, it just seemed to be really really composed. No ice underneath, nothing. just 1-2 feet of pow with a soft squishy base underneath. Symphony finally opened just past Noon on Friday.
    Patrollers did an excellent job: WB is a huge area with lots of high alpine bowls. It must have been a monumental task to make this safe after a meter of snow in 24 hours. Avy risk was incredibly high with a super unstable snow pack. Everyone boot packing to Flute will need to be paying attention and properly equipped. Tree wells lower down will require respect.
    Awesome week - Thursday and Friday were BUSY: Saturday is going to be insane on the mountain.
    But - this is when Whistler shines: massive snow with phenomenal terrain. There is literally something for every type of skier on the mountain right now!
    Ps - WB "mountain conditions forecast" on the official site is crap.
    The Snow-forecast.com site is usually very accurate. They totally called it the past 72 hours...

    • @riseandalpine
      @riseandalpine  9 місяців тому

      I totally agree with all of this mine. My favourite time to ski is the day after the big snowfall when the mountain settles and the snow base is soft. You can get speed, ski everything and the Alpine opens early. What an amazing week. This weekend was also awesome and surprisingly quiet all things considered.

    I did some backcountry heli-skiing last year for the first time at Panorama and had some deep, untouched powder (maybe not quite this deep) with some runs through the trees like this. I don't understand how guys can just point their skis down the hill and go through the trees. Even in the powder you just get going fast and I was just afraid of losing control and hitting a tree or just losing control of my speed. But I'm an older skier. These young guys aren't afraid of anything. They just ride through the trees like nothing can go wrong. One slight catching of a ski and they are face first into a tree and it's all over but they don't seem to care.

    • @riseandalpine
      @riseandalpine  9 місяців тому

      It's all just practice and repetition! To be honest I'm more afraid of catching an edge on a groomer and hitting a tree on the side of it, higher speed, even worse result. Usually in the trees I'm moving much slower than other spots. My worst wipeout 2 seasons ago involved me getting wrapped around a tree, it hurt but luckily I was alright minus bruised shins and an almost broken ski boot. Love tree skiing so much it's worth the risk to me.
