      @@suckboytony9637 Agreed. I think a really big part is your weight distribution is a lot less forgiving on a snowboard than skis. I went from being a strong intermediate boarder to carving fairly confidently my first time skiing because I could keep my weight forwards OR backwards (or on the inner/outer edges) without wiping out. Plus if you catch an edge on skis you can transfer weight to the other foot and save yourself, which definitely saved me several times within the day. If you try to keep your weight back and ride timidly on a snowboard you can't really make a turn, and if you keep your weight too far forwards you'll catch an edge and crash hard.
      The advanced skier I swapped with for an hour never managed to carve and definitely couldn't stay standing for 100s of feet like the guy in this vid. Very impressive

    Never been snowboarding but the falls always look so much more graceful. I always see people fall and basically bounce back up. When I fall on skis its a 20 minute process to unbury myself, find my skis, find my poles, get flipped back around, etc lol

    • @triceranaps

    • @aarontanaka5149
      @aarontanaka5149 Рік тому +4

      Totally depends on the fall...the tricky thing is that you can't stabilize yourself with both legs like you can with skiing, so when you fall its pretty much arms or face first into the ground. I broke my shoulder catching an edge at 35mph the first day up this season. But yes all your gear stays on.

      He is an expert skier so he is accustomed to speed and the concept of edge control to turn and stop. But at the same time his skiing expertise is his own handicap because when he picks up speed you can easily see how he tries to control the board moving his center of mass forward and rotating his hips. He did extremely well though given that this is his first time snowboarding.

I watched a couple how-to videos and snowboarding came pretty easy to me, I picked it up very quickly. I think the biggest part was knowing what to expect from the slopes, how fast the slopes can be, etc.

    I did the exact same thing my first time, but without any pointers. It was the Middlebury Snow Bowl up in Vermont, a lifelong skiier with around ~20 years experience. A couple of my friends were beginners, so I decided to gut it out with them and try boarding (and a little selfishly, I didn't want to be waiting around for them all day). We went up and figured it out as we went.
    That first day feels like you've had your ass kicked, literally and figuratively. And your wrists just kinda go numb. I was probably lucky not to get injured, I should have taken a lesson or started on something easier at least. But once you get the hang of turning it's a beautiful feeling. I stuck with snowboarding after that. I love skiing but boarding brings me even more joy.

We went to this little restaurant/diner upstairs at the lodge when she started making convo with the 2 workers there! As we were finishing up and leaving back to the hill, she was telling those nice older ladies that it was my first time ever being on a ski hill.. they both kinda paused and looked at eachother and one of them, exclaimed "then what the hell's he doing wearing snowboarding boots?!"

When I crossed from skis to snowboard, it took me a LONG time to figure out that I was twisting my board, trying to keep my shoulders perpendicular to the board (like a skier) instead of in line with the board (like a 'boarder). Consequently, I was always hooking edges and doing grand slams. Great job!

    As someone who has been skiing for the last 20 years... I just learned how to snowboard yesterday and it was not as hard as I expected. After about 4 hours both me and my friend could turn both directions, control our speed, and make it down a blue run no problem. My fiance on the other hand could not. My friend who is also learning to ski said it was way easier than skiing, so I think it's a person by person thing. My fiance said skiing was easier to learn, but me and my friend think snowboarding was. He can't turn both directions on skis, my fiance and I have both been skiing for ages, so I think we got one person from each camp in our little sample size.

    good to see someone who's ripping it on their first day still struggles with toe edge all the time because that's also what causes me the most problems while learning. every single toe edge turn is scary because it's what causes me the most falls. and they hurt the most too.
