Best parts about this video: Matthew Morrison's dancing Kerry Butler's smile when she's singing Laura Bell Bundy's facial expressions in the background Corey Reynolds' hips
She started out in the chorus of Grease, then they bumped her up to Jan. I got to see her in that, and still remember thinking how amazing her performance was.
I'm convinced Kerry should not participate in Shaiman and Whitman musicals on Broadway in the same years that Tammy Blanchard does a revival of something. 2003: Kerry plays Penny in Hairspray, gets well-deserved Drama Desk nomination as Best Featured Actress for her performance, Tammy plays Louise in the Bernadette revival of Gypsy, she gets the Tony nomination. 2011: Kerry plays Brenda in Catch Me If You Can, sings for the first time the song that will become her signature (and personal favorite to sing), once again gets Drama Desk nomination as Best Featured Actress, Tammy plays Hedy LaRue in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, and guess who once again sweeps in and steals the Tony nomination that was rightfully Kerry's. Maddening.
@@lizlemon3698 I was being semi-sarcastic when I posted that last night. I apologize for going too far. When will I learn that sarcasm, which largely depends on tone of voice, doesn’t translate well in internet posts, which always come across as literal? In all seriousness, I’m sure Tammy is not intentionally slighting Kerry; it’s just a series of unfortunate coincidences. Kerry did finally receive her long-overdue first Tony nomination for Xanadu, and I hope her day is yet to come. Best Case Scenario: Kerry and Tammy do a show together and they mutually agree that one of them submits as Leading and the other as Featured, so that neither of them gets in the other’s way.
Impressed they brought the pit musicians out to perform the song (or at least give the impression of a live band by playing along to the track) out on the plaza ^^
Hairspray should be brought back to Broadway!! The entire cast and songs like YCSTB always entails high energy and positivity throughout the entire show. I just love it!
This is a sight for sore eyes :) As delightful as it was to hear and see some of my favorite songs reinterpreted by a new cast in Hairspray Live! last week, the amazing Original Broadway Cast always comes to mind -- I still know all of the lyrics, years later, and think of them whenever I hear the score. Interesting and disappointing that they Edna/Harvey is omitted, and the giant Ultra Clutch can is flat. Also amusing that so many people think of Mr. Morrison as Mr. Shue first -- this was his first leading Broadway role and well before Glee.
It was the other way around for me - I saw The Show Must Go On video after I was familiar with Hairspray and this number. Tell you what, though - that UA-cam video helped get me through the pandemic and this number helps me get through rough times ever since it first came out. Even when times are tough, this number makes me want to get up and cheer.
Mr. Schuester, and Sgt Gabriel are both in this. I know technically Matthew Morrison and Corey Reynolds were both in Hairspray first, but I'll always remember Matt as Mr. Schuester from Glee, and Corey as Sgt Gabriel from The Closer.
+dgaller06 I saw Matthew in Once Upon A Mattress with Tracy Ullman & Carol Burnett. In fact, he is interested in doing Hairspray Live on NBC this December.
Adrián Ríos They did an outstanding job and it was a lil different that the cast wasn't actually at the parade but hopefully they'll bring their A game dec 7th
thecatman4ever Lol your probably just a Ariana Grande /Dove Cameron child fan so I am just going to agree with whatever you say so I don't make you cry.
Awesome performance but disappointing not to see Harvey Fiernstein as Edna. Also be ready for next holiday season Hairspray fans because NBC has chosen the adventures of Tracy and friends as their next holiday TV musical event.
A. S. Vieira Hairspray isn't one of my favorites but I have a bit of nostalgia for it. I saw the two movie versions twice and the Broadway version three times
This video is just further proof that hairspray live is best live musical to date. They casted that version perfectly while putting in celebrities and they followed the original choreography as shown here
No, but they've both had important roles in iconic and game-changing Broadway musicals: Loretta Devine, the actress you're thinking of, was the very first to play Lorell in Broadway's original Dreamgirls. This is Mary Bond Davis.
I love this performance.:-):-D What a great song.:-):-D Wooo! WOOOoo!I love the musical, but wish bith of their mothers went into the record store,so that Mama Maybelle would/could say Papa Tuney .We have a loony.
The fact that in Hairspray Live decided to do the original Broadway choreography is pretty impressive and it is something to appreciate
I’m so happy I’m not the only one who noticed that!!!
I am so happy about that. I am glad that they didn’t go with the 2007 movie choreography, or the wigs, or the costumes. They were just so boring.
we did it at my school i was a struggle to learn but we did it
West End choreography was the same
Nikki Hurley West end productions copy everything except the actors from the OBC in every production.
More like “you CANT stop to BREATHE”
as someone who participated in the show, I can confirm.
Lol for real! 🤣🤣💀
As fun, high energy, & upbeat as this song is, it’s a REALLY tough one to do... PLUS dancing... Oyy!!! I give them lots of credit!
MDRRR bien dit
It’s impressive! I don’t know how they do it!
Best parts about this video:
Matthew Morrison's dancing
Kerry Butler's smile when she's singing
Laura Bell Bundy's facial expressions in the background
Corey Reynolds' hips
Im sorry not the mr shue dancing no no
You’re sleeping on Shoshana Bean’s shoulder action
Wow! Matthew Morrison looks so young here!
Maddy Gowers ikr, to bad he didn't sing in the glee remake 😤
He still looks young up to now. He never ages one bit!
Because he is young
This was 5 years before Glee
Marissa was on the original cast of Hairspray AND the original cast of Grease?? Dang girl!! She is so lucky.
Not the original cast of Grease, but the first U.S. revival (as far as I know there have been two U.S. revivals of Grease)
Not lucky, talented
@@BellaGream Jan!
Lucky and talented!
She started out in the chorus of Grease, then they bumped her up to Jan. I got to see her in that, and still remember thinking how amazing her performance was.
I didn't know that Mr Shue from Glee show was in Hairspray musical. I loved him in Glee show Matthew Morrison is a great actor.
They did "you can't stop the beat" in Glee too
I know that. I love that song
I- younliked mr shue in glee????? HOW

And they performed that song on Glee lol...
+eddiwow24 I actually first saw Matthew Morrison in Once Upon A Mattress with Tracy Ullman and Carol Burnett.
@@birdlawco really?
@@moraweiss5820 yeah!
That baby screaming in the background though in the beginning
Corrine Renee legit I have a baby and I kept pausing the video thinking it was mine lol
I like Amber's hair better here than in the actual stage production. I'm glad they went with her hair from the movie for Hairspray Live.
This entire cast is iconic but Kerry is a legend, love her so much (got to meet her when I saw Beetlejuice too!)
I'm convinced Kerry should not participate in Shaiman and Whitman musicals on Broadway in the same years that Tammy Blanchard does a revival of something.

@@oscarphile I was unaware of her unfortunately overlooked talent. That’s like, a Hamilton level leg sweep, dropping her down.

Omg it's Elle Woods, and Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors!
Yep!
I thought you meant Ellen Greene at first and tried looking for her lol
i had NO idea that Matthew got to play Link Larkin
Abbie Rankin he's the original
Sam Adamsson well there was a Hairspray in the 80s
DJ Yeah but he's from the original Broadway cast that was before the 1980s version. The 1980s version was a remake of the Broadway musical.
Nini Blaxx when was the original broadway version. I thought this was the original broadway version
This performance is from 2002.. so the 1988 version was way before this.
Laura Bell Bundy AND Kerry Butler in one cast?!
Ahhh!!!! Laura Bell Bundy!! 😍 I love her
Only movie I ever saw where me and everyone else were up dancing in the aisles at the end. And I was 68 at the time.
You did it Mr. Schue! You’re on Broadway!
Laura Bell Bundy's facial expressions are so funny, I'm laughing so hard! I love her!

My first Broadway was Hairspray! it'll always hold a special place in my heart.
Queen. Kerry. Butler.
More than a Queen. She's a goddess.
And she once played an actual goddess!
Mr. Schuester, and Sgt Gabriel are both in this. I know technically Matthew Morrison and Corey Reynolds were both in Hairspray first, but I'll always remember Matt as Mr. Schuester from Glee, and Corey as Sgt Gabriel from The Closer.

Holy shit, it's Matthew Morrison!
what is incredible is that they are live! error is not permitted! Awesome
Katie called her Melissa. Her name is Marissa.
Omg LBB's (amber von tussle) face expressions in the background 😂 love Her!
Ngl i wish i could’ve seen this cast live :)
I love Matthew Morrison’s dancing so much
The interview in the beginning was so awkward
Seriously its like the interview did 0% percent research on the person she is interviewing
finally the comment i was waiting for
KERRY BUTLER IS TOO AMAZING FOR WORDS
The fact this song made it on to glee ! and matthew aka mr shue smile so big in that episode ! I wish glee did a whole episode for hairspray ❤️❤️❤️
I saw this cast. I even got my picture taken with Marissa and Matthew (for a ridiculously small donation to Broadway Cares).
This cast is so iconic. Too bad Corey bad hasn’t been in much other musicals, he has a great voice.
me encanta Matthew Morrison💕
Haha! Matthew Morrison is Link? That is SO awesome!

Omg look how young mr shue is ❤️❤️❤️
Young matt is so freaking cute 😂🥰
If I had been in that audience I could not have stopped dancing myself.

the only ones that gives me hope are Kristin and Dove

thecatman4ever Lol you so childish.
Mr. Schue singing so correct and fine I love Matthew Morrison
:-( no edna in this version...
matthew morrison plays glee but when you wiki him it does show that he plays hairspray
I know this is late but that's because your looking at his FILM stuff you have to look at perhaps plays or his bio.
Perhaps he's done both. Isn't that amazing?
amazing!
Wow, they were still very much recovering from the 90's
Awesome performance but disappointing not to see Harvey Fiernstein as Edna. Also be ready for next holiday season Hairspray fans because NBC has chosen the adventures of Tracy and friends as their next holiday TV musical event.
believe me, I cannot wait :-)

Movie Hairspray
The most inept camerawork EVER. I love that the button of the song is a shot of the timpani. Brilliant.
omg marrissa's talking voice is like ariana grande's talking voice!
Michael Emir Loresto To me It sounds like Demi lavato

Laura is the original Amber in hairspray and the original Elle woods in legally blonde

Mr shu looks adorb
Mr.Shue was up to a lot before the choir room!
Lol.
in 2002 when the musical first came to Broadway.
This cast was one of the better ones compared to the newer ones.
Definitely!!
"On the outside looking in"
Wait a damn minute!!! Is that mr Shuster
Yes it is. he played Link in hair spray Broadway show from like 2000 to 2007 I think
Mary Bond Davis is the best Motormouth ever.
I feel like i'm in 'The Hangover' "SHUT THAT BABY UP, SHUT THAT BABY UP!"
But other than that, MATTHEW MORRISON'S HAIR.
I’m sad that they didn’t do Tracy’s Mom...
Is that Mr. Shue?
Mr Schue, what on earth are you doing? 😂
This video is just further proof that hairspray live is best live musical to date. They casted that version perfectly while putting in celebrities and they followed the original choreography as shown here
Haha mr shue!!! I wondered why he was.so happy when rachel sung this :)
👍
Sue would have a field day on Mr. Schuester's hair then!
Ho hairspray Big fan of you oh I am I love your music and everything I want to be just like Tracy
I LOVE Hairspray You can't stop the beat song
+Lucinda Bell I love the song too. It's one of my favorite songs in the show
I’m a first-time Glee watcher and no one was gonna tell me Matthew Morrison played Link??? Oh my gosh???
