That was a professional recovery right there... I highly doubt many people in the audience would have even realized there was a mistake with the speed which the conductor got it back on track!
Luckily not many instruments playing at that section so it was easier for them to "jump" to cover for Harvey's entrance which was 2 beats out. The drummer obviously heard it and played out a bit bigger and the MD must have then showed a big downbeat at the next possible opportunity and then given obvious cues to the next entry of other players for example the trumpets after "Christmas ham". The conductor in this show has a mic to be able to give verbal cues to the band (on headphones) and he may have also given a measure number that way also just to be sure. Yes these things can happen in live situations and is part of what makes live theatre exciting and actually alive.
And this is why it is better to have a live orchestra or band than accompaniment tracks if one can afford it! Cause with those you basically gotta recover on your own haha.
I never knew they actually feature the black and white dress during the original run (most likely previews as Marissa later wears a pink dress) which makes me no longer question Tracy's dress in the 2007 movie with Nikki. I was so confused as to why she didn't wear a pink dress, but now it makes sense and it makes me love it even more!
LightLeadingMe well clearly she wears it because she's trying to bring together black and white. What's confusing about that? She also straightens her hair which is what they took from the original Hairspray which wasn't in the Broadway.
Also in the previous scene, she was wearing a prison uniform, the black and white stripes. Idk if that was intentional or not. Either way, love the dresses

Whoever thought casting fucking Amanda Bynes in a role that requires you to be able to sing shit like at 5:41 - 6:24 should be bludgeoned with some sort of blunt object... Amanda in that role was fucking embarrassing compared to the Broadway performers who originally performed the role, and she didn't even have to hit those notes while doing a super complex and tiring choreographed dance number at the same time like Kerry did! And this is the same crew that managed to make John Travolta in drag actually work/arguably even more so than Harvey from the OBC, so I honestly see no excuse for them not realizing that Amanda Bynes was completely out of her league and recasting the role...
tankmaster1018 Kerry was doing Xanadu on Broadway at that time so I think that she had to choose between them and honestly I would've chosen Xanadu too bc she was the lead AND got nominated for a Tony Award as Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical and the Drama League Award for Distinguished Performance
I so love that the audience applauded when Penny acknowledged her beauty, like she was finally realizing what the audience knew all along. In that moment, the ugly duckling became a beautiful swan. Kerry played it masterfully. Melts my little wooden heart.

I love the original cast because it was the first cast and they play all the parts kinda organically and natural... Over time the show kind of became a parody of itself.. Everyone did everything over the top and it lost its funny spark. I lived hairspray live but it too over played every bit of diologue.
I've seen another clip of the OBC, and Tracy is wearing a hot pink dress in this sequence. Was this early on in the run of the show and they made costume modifications? Any thoughts/info? I actually like this black and white dress better than the pink one.

That song was added for the 2007 movie, but it became popular enough that it became the curtain call song for Hairspray Live in 2016. If there's ever a Broadway revival, I hope they do the right thing and incorporate the song.
But it totally fits in the John Waters world, which is where the original film that this show is based on comes from. But yeah I agree. It's freaking hysterical though!

i hate to admit this but the movie was better, considering they were not over acting too much, i would say that the singing was better but that was editing it takes real talent to sing live this well. but the sequence of the movie was better..... but for a live show this was pretty good

I think this is the Seattle performance pre Broadway as the Final has no real dance break or the striped dress. BUT it's the original cast!
The final does have the dance break u can literally look it up in any video on Facebook lol
The final version replaces the “Oooooooh” in the dance break with a guitar solo, and it also replaces her final costume.

whoa...that sends Broadway down a peg or two. It is not required but happens often when it is musical theatre. Authenticity is always best and can be brought to the stage of musicals

i hate to admit this but the movie was better, considering they were not over acting too much, i would say that the singing was better but that was editing it takes real talent to sing live this well. but the sequence of the movie was better..... but for a live show this was pretty good
