Er war eine Ausnahmeerscheinung. Wir würden einiges darauf verwetten, dass er immer noch irgendwo mit irgendwem probt ("Können wir es noch einmal machen, bitte?). Vermutlich Bruckner. 😊
die TV-Aufnahmen, so schön sie sind, spiegeln nur etwas von seiner unglaublichen Ausstrahlung wieder die er im Konzert hatte. Ich habe ihn mehr als 50x im Konzert erlebt, auch seine beiden letzten, Anfang November 2001 mit dem NDR-SO in seiner Heimat Wuppertal und in der Frankfurter Alten Oper. In Großbritannien machte man übrigens mit seinem Nachnamen ein Wortspiel und nannte ihn ehrfurchtsvoll "the magic Wand". magic wand ist das englische Wort für Zauberstab.
Es ist ein innerliches phänomenales Gefühl so eine Interpretion von einem der ganz Großen zu erleben

Everything feels instinctively right in a performance conducted by Wand. I always turn to him for a reference recording and I am never disappointed. This Schubert is simply magnificent.

Schleswig Holstein Festival in Lübeck erleben dürfen, mir unvergesslich. Es war glaube ich einer seiner letzten Konzerte und da hatte
das großartige Orchester noch seinen alten Namen. Dankeschön für diese Aufnahme.

I am happy to see this treasure of a recording back. I heard it some 15 years ago on UA-cam, but it seems to have been deleted, perhaps due to copyright claims. Now that it's been re-posted by none other than the NDR, no more worrying.

@@claudiaochoacruz I watched Paavo Jarvi and the Frankfurt Radio S.O. play Bruckner Symphony #1 before turning to this fine performance of Schubert led by Gunter Wand. BTW, great concerts of orchestra and children choruses from Tomsk and MoscowConservatoryTV. Chatted w/ many of our friends. Are you familiar w/ the Penguin Cafe Orchestra? Not a fan of Schubert...but I come here for the very high quality of camera work of these Wand-SHMF series, yet again.
It is such a pleasure to watch a concert video in which the cameras accurately capture the "right moments".
I especially like how the entry of Trombones is handled in 5:48.

Da nach Wands Tod leider bei Weitem nicht alle Wand-Konzerte auf DVDs veröffentlicht wurden, die der NDR jetzt in den letzten Monaten und Jahren hier auf UA-cam eingestellt hat - z.B. Bruckner 8&9 aus dem Lübecker Dom, Beethoven 5&6, Brahms 2-4, das Berliner Konzerthaus-Konzert mit Bruckner 3/Schubert 3, Schubert 9 (8) aus der Berliner Philharmonie usw. - , hatte ich eigentlich gehofft, dass der Sender Wands 110. Geburtstag und 20. Todestag in diesem Jahr zum Anlass nehmen würde, um auch noch einmal in seinem dritten Fernsehprogramm mit dem einen oder anderen dieser auf DVD bisher "fehlenden" Konzerte an seinen ehemaligen Chef- und Ehrendirigenten zu erinnern (z.B. im Rahmen einer langen Wand-Konzert-Nacht), sodass man sich dann diese Konzerte für sein persönliches Archiv hätte aufnehmen können. Aber bis jetzt hat sich diese Hoffnung leider nicht erfüllt. Da wiederholt der NDR lieber Dohnanyi-, Hengelbrock- oder Eschenbach-Konzerte.
Diesen Gedanken geben wir gerne nochmal an die Fernsehredaktion weiter! Wir fänden das ebenfalls sehr schön!! Danke für den Impuls!

I could be wrong… isnt Symphony No. 9 Schubert’s Great Symphony in C Major, and the 8th his “unfinished?”
With Schubert symphonies, it's tricky! There are different numbering systems out there - one attributing the original 7th to Schubert, one that doesn't since it might not be put together by Schubert himself but from other people using Schubert's sketches.
This makes the Great C Major sometimes appear as No. 8 (as in our uploads) - and sometimes as No. 9. Respectively the "Unfinished" either his No. 7 or his No. 8. 😅
This is the ninth, not the eighth , but who cares?
According to the current state of research, the work is number 8 in the series of Schubert's symphonies.
Viel zu schnell, fast wie Karajan. ist nicht die Zeit Schuberts. Kommt an Furtwängler nicht ran. Im Gegenteil. Erst wenn man Furtwängler hört, erfährt man, wie diese Musik wirklich klingt und was Musik ist. das hier ist nichts als blinde Raserei. Auch eine Art, die Kunst zu vernichten.
