You are so 100 percent right. I lived in Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand and the States, but nothing beats the South African cuisine. Simply the best in the world, which comes with hospitality and friendliness too.
If SA could get unemployment down, crime down and formal housing up. We could be able to roam the streets safely, party all night and not worry about safety.
All the things you've listed boil down these main issues, corruption within the government, the law enforcement and public judiciary system. If these 3 could be tackled head on, everything else you've mentioned will fall into place easily!

We have been in the UK for 20 years with my family, now busy planning to return back home seen it all, and done it all home is where the heart is. Cannot wait no matter what. I am very glad for you never ever doubt yourself.

I'm a Cameroonian student and graduated from Wits University last year. I really miss my time in SA. Lived in Cape Town as well for a few years and no where else compares to the diversity and warmth of SA.
Great video! I am a South African in Germany (for 9 years now) and I can agree that for all the "good" things you can find in Europe...it still does not come close to the "feel" of South Africa and what it has to offer. We are truly lucky to be calling ourselves South African!

We have the same profile his grandmother was coloured and grandfather British! Mine is mostly German Norwegian and Scandinavian and Romanian.My paternal grandfather was German an my grandmother was from Zimbabwean. So I have Bantu ( Nguni tribe) dna as well. Wow we are still mates! We regard each other as family❤️
I love South Africa! Of course it's not perfect, but as an American who loves to travel, it's one place I've visited that I could see myself living in one day.

I'm a Brit and have spent 11 years in Cape Town. We are moving back to the UK because as things stand I cannot see any future for our 10 year old daughter in S.A. It is without doubt one of if not the most beautiful countries on earth. Having said that if you are constantly looking over your shoulder because of the levels of crime as beautiful as it is how can you ever truly relax and enjoy it? We will return for visits but raising kids there is another thing all together. One last one, Marks and Spencers/Woolworths are one and the same from what I've seen. Obviously there's certain things that Woolies does that Marks doesn't but quality wise I'd say they're on par.
Whilst I enjoyed my 6 months in Sweden, I respect the Swedish nation and their humanitarian values, I found that the Swedish persons smiled so very little. ☹️

Been in Australia for 4 years myself and really loving it. I miss home, my friends and braaing but not all the bullshit, unless the political situation changes, I will ever move back. I find people that don't embrace their new surroundings are the ones that want to go home because they are comparing everything to what they are use to in home country SA. Have to get involved, meet make friends, and be part of the new country you live in otherwise it will never work out. I see on SA groups in Melbourne all the time, that people only looking for SA people,SA Afrikaans Dr's and dentists, complain about food and culture etc.. Why move in the first place if thats the mind set you have. Just being devils advocate here.
Been back since 2017, from living in England from 2005... Love being back and having a dop at my favourite pub, Capital Craft(Pta East). I thank England for introducing me to craft beer and it's beautiful to see the growth of the craft beverage culture in S.A. Try and stay a bit longer though, there's life lessons the UK will teach you that you'll never learn at home. Personally, it made me appreciate S.A more because I've always thought the grass was greener. Still remember spending my 21st birthday in UK with money in the bank and nice clothes but "few" people to spend the day with, that moment made me view life way differently. Now whenever I get the chance I go on roadtrips, took my 1st train ride to Cape Town a few years ago and it was awesome, the scenery and different people from different provinces was a dope experience. I now have a little digital marketing business with a friend who's still in UK and love everything about growing our own business from the ground up. Heita, Hola my fellow Pretorian 👊🏾

The Spur comment I can relate... I even grew up thinking it's part of our tradition to go to Spur for birthdays🤣😂🤣😂🤣. Like 90's kids will tell you... I fully agree with everything. I've been living in Germany for 8 years now and I am missing so many things. Not just the food and nature, but also the people. Having people smiling at you when you walk past them or going into a pub and chatting to everyone around you. I think that's what makes South Africans so special. Having all the food, drinks and nature don't come close to sharing all of that without South Africans around you. ❤️
Yes. That is it. South African society is so wonderful, accepting and caring. It is comforting to the soul. I speak to almost everyone where I go, people in shops, people at filling stations, at eateries, making conversation. I visited the USA once. It was so strange how people didn't want eye contact or want you even to stand near them. Even the cashiers did not want eye contact. We have warmth and togetherness. It's comforting.

I'm based in Boston, USA. Nothing compares to South Africa; from the food, the vibe, architecture and the beautiful people. I walk around in my neighborhood here and it suddenly hits me how beautiful South Africa is. With all the endless choice of food over here, the taste is really nothing to talk about. This will shock you- i miss the endless malls on every corner in South Africa. I feel like I have to drive a while to get to a decent mall here in the US. I never realized how spoiled I was for malls when I was back home, I was really cocooned by 3 major malls when I was back

The UK, especially Scotland has its beautiful places but few countries can compete with South Africa in terms of beauty. I thought one of the things you’d mention was the weather. UK weather is generally not great (from my experience). I am surprised they don’t have Woolworths in the UK. I guess I thought that since they are in New Zealand they must be in the UK. Same with some of the fast food places you mentioned. I thought they had a UK presence as well. I hope your family didn’t give up their SA home. That’s a beautiful area too, I like the jacaranda trees in the Pretoria area.
I've left SA 20 years ago and love my life in the UK. I've worked hard over the 20 years to get where i am today. I still miss my old country but weighing the negatives and the positives up i cannot see myself moving back to a uncertain future as a white South African at my age. To find sustainable work and medical cover at this stage in my life would be a massively expensive gamble....but i must also ad that if you are a homebird then nobody will last in any part of the world if you cannot leave home for more then 5 minutes without crying your eyes out. You need to be mentally strong to survive in the outside world i suppose. The outside world isn't for everyone but you can make it work if you put your mind to it. There's loads of expads dotted all over who will give you loads of advise and support ..so you are never alone. 🤙🤙🤙
The one single thing that I miss the most when I travel outside of South Africa are the smiles of our people. Here the strangers smile, cashiers smile .... the moment i arrive in a foreign country, I am confronted with cold unfriendly expressions - my smile is seldom returned. I love 🇿🇦❤️
This was so hard to watch, because I also adore my home South Africa. But with crime and safety escalating every day, we're feeling like our own homes have become high-walled prisons to keep us safe. We're having to look abroad at another way of living without fear and such intensive corruption. It's heartbreaking for us, we love everything else about SA. We're from Cape Town- a true gem in the world. Just so wish our country was showing the possibility of things turning around and getting better.

Great video. I have lived in the UK for over 20 years, and while the country has given me work and other opportunities, I miss SA desperately. I miss the warmth of the people, the sunny weather, the big sky country, the overwhelming beauty of the land ... and the food is absolutely better! Maybe in a year or two I'll have saved enough to return.

SA is home, we lived in the middle east Bahrain for work & didn't even hesitate moving back to SA in 2012. We are a tough bunch & full of hope & determination of a better SA❤🙏🏻🤍 for all of us. Its Ngo's, charities & local communities holing our country up! No one is coming to save or help us...up to US to be the change needed in our beautiful country.
I witness to people in SA, I found every one across the board are so very kind abs friendly. My black friends tell me we don't want the white people to leave, we need them we want them to stay. I know its not always easy to be yourself in the UK but, practice being you because people would really appreciate your character. I too lived in Waterkloof, Pretoria and it was an amazing experience living and working there.
Dude I get it, I lived in Australia for many years and missed SA. Made the mistake of moving back, trust it's not worth it. Stay in the UK for work, stability and NHS. Holiday here definitely, but don't move back, it's not the same as when you left. People are more aggressive, poverty is worse than ever, jobs are super scarce and the exploitation is revolting. STAY PUT!

I am a South African living in Mexico. You talking about Wimpy brings back memories of the Farmhouse Breakfast with the boerewors. Probably one of the things I miss is Boerewors. There is nothing that competes with it anywhere in the world. I left in 2019 and if things change radically I will be on the first plane home.
I can understand this but the opposite way round, I lived in the UK when I was a kid and moved back to SA at 12 . I miss everything! I want rainy days inside and shopping at M&S. Quirky little houses and central heating. Relative safety would be great ngl. That's where my heart is.
Thank you for a lovely video and as a South African recognized every thing you said. I came to the UK 19 years ago at the age of 54 with my British born husband. He had medical problems and we couldn't afford the fantastic private South African medical. My poor husband ended up totally bedridden for 10 years after a total failure of a hip replacement. Many Brits are going private and that is more expensive than the UK. But you really need money to go private in South Africa. My daughter and husband moved from Joburg to Kwazulu Natal, they had a business and thought they could manage to live debt free. My son inlaw 52 got luchimia and they didn't have the funds to go private. The racism in the hospital was mind boggling and they didn't want to put him in ICU. He passed away, because of neglect. After my husband passed away 84 with a "mini stroke", and all benefits stopped and I was left with no funds, I thought all I can do is go back to South Africa and I had always dreamed of it. But I never lived in any other place than Johannesburg. And I loved it. Kwazulu Natal was a shock to me. Harburg is a village and I really never knew you got such strange places in South Africa. While in SA, a Polish friend let me know that letters eventually arrived granting me housing benefits and tax benefits. My daughter was worried about me in South Africa in case I needed medical help and she said she could never take me to the hospital where her husband died. So I had to do something I never thought I would have to do and come back to the UK. It's a very lonely life and the only friends I have are German, Scottish and Polish. I have been going to a garden centre for 19 years, spend a lot of money and know every one, but nobody has ever mentioned going for coffee. Maybe it is because we are in Cambridge. So my daughter is moving back to Johannesburg and very pleased for her. If you are used to the city never go and live in the sticks. I think Scotland is different to England and people are friendly. Talking about Waitrose, I am forced to shop at Waitrose, there is no comparison to Woolworths in SA. There are always trolleys in the isles and it reminds me of a Pick and Pay we had where I lived in Joburg. South Africa is still my home and I am sad that at 73 I can not make it financially. I'm also very safe here and I get benefits and look after myself and hope I never need the NHS. I still miss the doctors I had in SA. Since Covert, the doctors phone you, or you can wait for weeks before you see a doctor for 10 minutes. If I was younger and could make a fresh start, I would be on that plane tomorrow. While others oversees want to come back to SA, I'm trying to find a way out of here to the US. It's maybe because my father was born and grew up in Zim and SA is inevitably moving into that direction. All I can say is, the UK might be a massive shift due to lowering living standards, but it sure as hell offers safety and security. Just be grateful that you are in a position to be able to even stay in the UK. Most of us in SA don't have that luxury, most of us don't have dual citizenship or ancestral visas.

I'm South African and I live in Reunion Island for almost 7 years now. And I can't stop complaining about the food here. Even my wife who is Reunaise love and misses South Africa as well. We really have strong feelings about moving back home.

People are friendly, always happy and food is out of this world, infact this was also echoed by many English I have spoken to. They say South Africa is the most beautiful country in the world and say food is out of this world and people are very friendly and always happy. I am very proud to be a South African. You just land at the airport and people are playing music and dancing. You just feel it in your blood that you are home. The atmosphere changes right away once you step yout foot on the soil, it's different, very welcoming,you just feel at home. Tne braai, the biltong,tomato sausage. Ulusu/ binnegoed/ inqweme,yhu! South Africa is going through the same exhausting process that every new democracy went through when they started 100+ years ago. People like comparing a 28 year old country to 300 - 400 year old ones who had the same economic disparities, the same hi-jacking and looting, the same corruption that we are going through now. I'm not saying I like living through this process. I'm saying that ib spite of all this, we live in one of the most underrated countries in the world. There are things in first world countries which are considered luxuries that are commonplace to us.

Very interesting. Before you started I thought ok. What would be on her list? Nando's? I lived in Botswana for a time and I became very homesick. Just standing in a queue outside the bank, chatting to everyone, experiencing the togetherness and acceptance of each other as South Africans, made me cry afterwards because I had missed it for so long. I also believe we still have personal freedom here.
I can legally live in the UK, but I've chosen to live in South Africa . I went over to the UK for a holiday about 20 years ago. The weather was horrible, and London seemed very overwhelming and crowded ! I did visit an uncle in Perth, Scotland. Again, the Scottish weather was very depressing. All in all, i felt i wasted a lot of money and wasted 14 days of my life!
Hey...I feel you..I have been living here for 16 years and not a day goes by where i dont miss S.A. I miss the vibe..culture and the people. Seems like when im in the uk I hqve to go out to get rid of boredom. Back home i can sit right outside my front door and have fun with company...i miss jozi
I lived in USA for a year and couldn't wait to come back. Now I regret returning except for being with my family. If you want to come back then just be ready for extreme corruption, incompetence, poverty, loadshedding and water shortages and worst of all EXTREMELY HIGH CRIME WITH NO LAW AND ORDER. I really love my country and our people but until things start changing for the better, coming back for food is not worth it. Find a really good reason like family so that when things go south and you're driving around fearing being hijacked or robbed at any second your decision will be worth it. No place like home but I'm talking from experience. Best to stay in a private secure complex where you can work, shop and exercise there so you go out when you want an excursion 😄 The potholes here are so huge if you drive into one there you might be able to come out here in SA!

I was in New Zealand for almost two years. I’m lactose in tolerant and allergic to eggs too. I came back to SA six weeks ago. I can’t get vegan Magnum ice cream or vegan cake in Johannesburg. The area were we live does not have public transport, you have to have your own transport to get to a library and schools. In New Zealand I walked to church, it was a three minute walk to the bus stop, that took me to the Mall and library. I meet with other seniors at the church, which was in walking distance. In 2019 I called an Uber and Bolt taxi in Johannesburg and they never pitched. I complained I was told it wasn’t worth it to pick me up to take me to church the trip was too short!! 😤
@@hopebuhali3887 yes the July mass looting & burning of malls of which was to be expected eventually and of which we are still suffering the consequences were a classic example of how I am exaggerating. It's not a big deal that we were fearing for our lives and had our businesses closed for a week & burnt while we stood with guns on the street throughout the night protecting our neighborhood & malls to allow mothers to get milk for their babies or people to get food at exorbitant prices for their families because the pandemic & reinstated loadshedding doesn't cause enough daily financial distress. Or maybe the recent increase in jewellery store robberies which have become a norm for this time of year & my recent second attempted hijacking is not a big deal. All I had to do was borrow money & choose between window tint or minor car service. Or the rotting dirt outside our houses that isn't collected for 2 weeks because of yet another protest but our rates have been increased. I almost feel obliged to apologise for my "false representation". A real little gem, our province & country. You have set me straight, today I might even go to my municipality & personally thank them for the 3year frustration in processing my business licence - if they haven't decided to randomly close early again🙌

You mentioned the looting, If you didn't know, South Africa has hundreds of cities ,towns and rural communities, of which looting mainly took place in 3 CITIES in South Africa Jhb, Pmb and DBN, 99% of SA citizens did not even participate in the looting of Which some innocent citizens lost their lives due to racial profiling in the hands of the people claiming to be "protecting their community" and assuming they were looters, and looting only happened in A FEW PARTS of those cities, 90% of JHB was not even affected in the looting, Joburg is the biggest metropolitan area with so many malls and shops, Most residents have not even been inconvenienced one bit, so that's exaggeration coming from you. Like i said idk where you live, but where I live garbage is collected every single week and the streets are clean and roads are in good condition, everything regularly maintained, so yes your generalization about SA is a false representation. In many parts of SA public service delivery, safety and security, policing, law and order, water supply etc. is actually very excellent, in other parts especially very populated it can be the opposite, but doesn't mean its generally bad everywhere in SA. Personally I think the current government is not doing enough to improve the current conditions in SA, but they honestly really did improve things other parts.
You talk about Rusks. I can't understand why i can't find rusks in the UK, they are delicious and amazing for a quick brekkie. I also miss vetkoek, koeksustets, and the lovely variety of breads. The bakeries are huge and have so much to explore, its hard to make up my mind about which one i want. I love the shoppjng malls and the lovely friendly staff. My favourite dish at the restaurants was the Seafood platter with a fresh variety of different fish. The cooks are amazing. I also loved sitting outside after work listening to the frogs and other sounds. There is something very special in the country, and of course having a braai with friends on the weekends. My wish is that SA will change for the better for everyone. A safe, happy place where all people can support and live together in harmony. Thank you so much. 🐝
Sorry but having been born and raised in SA for the first 30 years of my life, then spent the subsequent 4 decades in the UK, interspersed with many visits back to the old country, I'm totally certain that I made the right choice. It's just the pleasure of not having to "watch my back" in the UK and not needing to lock doors at night, although I still do out of habit. Yes food tastes so much better in SA, but personal safety and security tops everything for me. I knew the son of the Greek family who started Steers, when we did military service together. No doubt you know that Nandos is South African as well. However there's a lot more to choosing where to build a life for your family than food, wine and clothing shops. By the way, Woolworths is owned by Marks & Spencer UK and aims at a similarly prosperous segment of society.

You are so 100 percent right. I lived in Switzerland, Canada, New Zealand and the States, but nothing beats the South African cuisine. Simply the best in the world, which comes with hospitality and friendliness too.
I honestly didn't like the food at ALDi , Tesco and the rest. SA food is way way better and doesn't taste artificial.

I'm a Brit and have spent 11 years in Cape Town. We are moving back to the UK because as things stand I cannot see any future for our 10 year old daughter in S.A. It is without doubt one of if not the most beautiful countries on earth. Having said that if you are constantly looking over your shoulder because of the levels of crime as beautiful as it is how can you ever truly relax and enjoy it? We will return for visits but raising kids there is another thing all together. One last one, Marks and Spencers/Woolworths are one and the same from what I've seen. Obviously there's certain things that Woolies does that Marks doesn't but quality wise I'd say they're on par.
We moved to the USA over 30 years ago and I still miss South Africa. It is a completely different culture and I miss everything about it.

Been in Australia for 4 years myself and really loving it. I miss home, my friends and braaing but not all the bullshit, unless the political situation changes, I will ever move back. I find people that don't embrace their new surroundings are the ones that want to go home because they are comparing everything to what they are use to in home country SA. Love being back and having a dop at my favourite pub, Capital Craft(Pta East). I thank England for introducing me to craft beer and it's beautiful to see the growth of the craft beverage culture in S.A.
Try and stay a bit longer though, there's life lessons the UK will teach you that you'll never learn at home. Personally, it made me appreciate S.A more because I've always thought the grass was greener. Still remember spending my 21st birthday in UK with money in the bank and nice clothes but "few" people to spend the day with, that moment made me view life way differently. Now whenever I get the chance I go on roadtrips, took my 1st train ride to Cape Town a few years ago and it was awesome, the scenery and different people from different provinces was a dope experience.
I now have a little digital marketing business with a friend who's still in UK and love everything about growing our own business from the ground up.

I fully agree with everything. I've been living in Germany for 8 years now and I am missing so many things. Not just the food and nature, but also the people. Having people smiling at you when you walk past them or going into a pub and chatting to everyone around you. I think that's what makes South Africans so special. Having all the food, drinks and nature don't come close to sharing all of that without South Africans around you. ❤️

Yes. That is it. South African society is so wonderful, accepting and caring. It is comforting to the soul. I speak to almost everyone where I go, people in shops, people at filling stations, at eateries, making conversation. I visited the USA once. It was so strange how people didn't want eye contact or want you even to stand near them. Even the cashiers did not want eye contact. We have warmth and togetherness. It's comforting.

I walk around in my neighborhood here and it suddenly hits me how beautiful South Africa is. With all the endless choice of food over here, the taste is really nothing to talk about. This will shock you- i miss the endless malls on every corner in South Africa. I feel like I have to drive a while to get to a decent mall here in the US. I never realized how spoiled I was for malls when I was back home, I was really cocooned by 3 major malls when I was back

The UK, especially Scotland has its beautiful places but few countries can compete with South Africa in terms of beauty. I thought one of the things you’d mention was the weather. UK weather is generally not great (from my experience). I am surprised they don’t have Woolworths in the UK. I guess I thought that since they are in New Zealand they must be in the UK. Same with some of the fast food places you mentioned. I thought they had a UK presence as well. I hope your family didn’t give up their SA home. That’s a beautiful area too, I like the jacaranda trees in the Pretoria area.
I've left SA 20 years ago and love my life in the UK. I've worked hard over the 20 years to get where i am today. I still miss my old country but weighing the negatives and the positives up i cannot see myself moving back to a uncertain future as a white South African at my age. To find sustainable work and medical cover at this stage in my life would be a massively expensive gamble....but i must also ad that if you are a homebird then nobody will last in any part of the world if you cannot leave home for more then 5 minutes without crying your eyes out. You need to be mentally strong to survive in the outside world i suppose. The outside world isn't for everyone but you can make it work if you put your mind to it. There's loads of expads dotted all over who will give you loads of advise and support ..so you are never alone. 🤙🤙🤙

Great video. I have lived in the UK for over 20 years, and while the country has given me work and other opportunities, I miss SA desperately. I miss the warmth of the people, the sunny weather, the big sky country, the overwhelming beauty of the land ... and the food is absolutely better! Maybe in a year or two I'll have saved enough to return.

I always wanted to travel, I didn't last a week out of this country, I was terribly homesick and I couldn't wait to get back home. I even had a fight with my wife to use her credit card and book me a flight back home immediately. No place like SA🇿🇦

SA is home, we lived in the middle east Bahrain for work & didn't even hesitate moving back to SA in 2012. We are a tough bunch & full of hope & determination of a better SA❤🙏🏻🤍 for all of us. Its Ngo's, charities & local communities holing our country up! No one is coming to save or help us...up to US to be the change needed in our beautiful country.
I am South African living in the USA and I totally agree about Woolworths. I have not found a grocer here that is as good as Woolworths.
I witness to people in SA, I found every one across the board are so very kind abs friendly. My black friends tell me we don't want the white people to leave, we need them we want them to stay. I truly believe all SA citizens should come back we need to build SA together , we need you all back here. Indians coloured black pls come back to build our country 🙏

I know its not always easy to be yourself in the UK but, practice being you because people would really appreciate your character. I too lived in Waterkloof, Pretoria and it was an amazing experience living and working there.

Dude I get it, I lived in Australia for many years and missed SA. Made the mistake of moving back, trust it's not worth it. Stay in the UK for work, stability and NHS. Holiday here definitely, but don't move back, it's not the same as when you left. People are more aggressive, poverty is worse than ever, jobs are super scarce and the exploitation is revolting. STAY PUT!

I am a South African living in Mexico. You talking about Wimpy brings back memories of the Farmhouse Breakfast with the boerewors. Probably one of the things I miss is Boerewors. There is nothing that competes with it anywhere in the world. I left in 2019 and if things change radically I will be on the first plane home.

I can understand this but the opposite way round, I lived in the UK when I was a kid and moved back to SA at 12 . I miss everything! I want rainy days inside and shopping at M&S. Quirky little houses and central heating. Relative safety would be great ngl. That's where my heart is.

I came to the UK 19 years ago at the age of 54 with my British born husband.
He had medical problems and we couldn't afford the fantastic private South African medical.
My poor husband ended up totally
bedridden for 10 years after a total failure of a hip replacement.
Many Brits are going private and that is more expensive than the UK.
But you really need money to go private in South Africa.
My daughter and husband moved from Joburg to Kwazulu Natal, they had a business and thought they could manage to live debt free.
My son inlaw 52 got luchimia and they didn't have the funds to go private.
The racism in the hospital was mind boggling and they didn't want to put him in ICU.
He passed away, because of neglect.
After my husband passed away 84 with a "mini stroke", and all benefits stopped and I was left with no funds, I thought all I can do is go back to South Africa and I had always dreamed of it.
But I never lived in any other place than Johannesburg.
And I loved it.
Kwazulu Natal was a shock to me.
Harburg is a village and I really never knew you got such strange places in South Africa.
While in SA, a Polish friend let me know that letters eventually arrived granting me housing benefits and tax benefits.
My daughter was worried about me in South Africa in case I needed medical help and she said she could never take me to the hospital where her husband died.
So I had to do something I never thought I would have to do and come back to the UK.
It's a very lonely life and the only friends I have are German, Scottish and Polish.
I have been going to a garden centre for 19 years, spend a lot of money and know every one, but nobody has ever mentioned going for coffee.
Maybe it is because we are in Cambridge.
So my daughter is moving back to Johannesburg and very pleased for her.
If you are used to the city never go and live in the sticks.
I think Scotland is different to England and people are friendly.
Talking about Waitrose, I am forced to shop at Waitrose, there is no comparison to Woolworths in SA.
There are always trolleys in the isles and it reminds me of a Pick and Pay we had where I lived in Joburg.
South Africa is still my home and I am sad that at 73 I can not make it financially.
I'm also very safe here and I get benefits and look after myself and hope I never need the NHS.
I still miss the doctors I had in SA.
Since Covert, the doctors phone you, or you can wait for weeks before you see a doctor for 10 minutes.
If I was younger and could make a fresh start, I would be on that plane tomorrow.

There was a Chevrolet advert a very long time ago here in SA and the words were... "braaivleis, rugby, sunny skies and Chevrolet... " Sums SA up.
While others oversees want to come back to SA, I'm trying to find a way out of here to the US. It's maybe because my father was born and grew up in Zim and SA is inevitably moving into that direction. All I can say is, the UK might be a massive shift due to lowering living standards, but it sure as hell offers safety and security. Just be grateful that you are in a position to be able to even stay in the UK. Most of us in SA don't have that luxury, most of us don't have dual citizenship or ancestral visas.

I'm South African and I live in Reunion Island for almost 7 years now. And I can't stop complaining about the food here. Even my wife who is Reunaise love and misses South Africa as well. We really have strong feelings about moving back home.
South African food is hands down the best! Reunion Island does look beautiful though!

I fully agree with you. I am also a South African living in the UK. South Africa is still the best. People are friendly, always happy and food is out of this world, infact this was also echoed by many English I have spoken to. They say South Africa is the most beautiful country in the world and say food is out of this world and people are very friendly and always happy. I am very proud to be a South African. You just land at the airport and people are playing music and dancing. You just feel it in your blood that you are home. The atmosphere changes right away once you step yout foot on the soil, it's different, very welcoming,you just feel at home. Tne braai, the biltong,tomato sausage. Ulusu/ binnegoed/ inqweme,yhu! Ndatsho ndarhala!!

South Africa is going through the same exhausting process that every new democracy went through when they started 100+ years ago.
People like comparing a 28 year old country to 300 - 400 year old ones who had the same economic disparities, the same hi-jacking and looting, the same corruption that we are going through now.
I'm not saying I like living through this process.
I'm saying that ib spite of all this, we live in one of the most underrated countries in the world. There are things in first world countries which are considered luxuries that are commonplace to us.
And you must know that we as your brothers and sisters we love you no matter where you are ❤❤❤❤

Nando's? I lived in Botswana for a time and I became very homesick. Just standing in a queue outside the bank, chatting to everyone, experiencing the togetherness and acceptance of each other as South Africans, made me cry afterwards because I had missed it for so long. I also believe we still have personal freedom here.

I can legally live in the UK, but I've chosen to live in South Africa . I went over to the UK for a holiday about 20 years ago. The weather was horrible, and London seemed very overwhelming and crowded ! I did visit an uncle in Perth, Scotland. Again, the Scottish weather was very depressing. All in all, i felt i wasted a lot of money and wasted 14 days of my life!
Hey...I feel you..I have been living here for 16 years and not a day goes by where i dont miss S.A. I miss the vibe..culture and the people. Seems like when im in the uk I hqve to go out to get rid of boredom. Back home i can sit right outside my front door and have fun with company...i miss jozi
It's the quality of the chips but also that seasoning. And yeah, God damn a Whimpy burger. Not forgetting the Spur white sauce.
I lived in USA for a year and couldn't wait to come back. Now I regret returning except for being with my family. If you want to come back then just be ready for extreme corruption, incompetence, poverty, loadshedding and water shortages and worst of all EXTREMELY HIGH CRIME WITH NO LAW AND ORDER. I really love my country and our people but until things start changing for the better, coming back for food is not worth it. Find a really good reason like family so that when things go south and you're driving around fearing being hijacked or robbed at any second your decision will be worth it. No place like home but I'm talking from experience. Best to stay in a private secure complex where you can work, shop and exercise there so you go out when you want an excursion 😄 The potholes here are so huge if you drive into one there you might be able to come out here in SA!

I was in New Zealand for almost two years. I’m lactose in tolerant and allergic to eggs too. I came back to SA six weeks ago. I can’t get vegan Magnum ice cream or vegan cake in Johannesburg. The area were we live does not have public transport, you have to have your own transport to get to a library and schools. In New Zealand I walked to church, it was a three minute walk to the bus stop, that took me to the Mall and library. I meet with other seniors at the church, which was in walking distance. In 2019 I called an Uber and Bolt taxi in Johannesburg and they never pitched. I complained I was told it wasn’t worth it to pick me up to take me to church the trip was too short!! 😤

@@hopebuhali3887 yes the July mass looting & burning of malls of which was to be expected eventually and of which we are still suffering the consequences were a classic example of how I am exaggerating. It's not a big deal that we were fearing for our lives and had our businesses closed for a week & burnt while we stood with guns on the street throughout the night protecting our neighborhood & malls to allow mothers to get milk for their babies or people to get food at exorbitant prices for their families because the pandemic & reinstated loadshedding doesn't cause enough daily financial distress. Or maybe the recent increase in jewellery store robberies which have become a norm for this time of year & my recent second attempted hijacking is not a big deal. All I had to do was borrow money & choose between window tint or minor car service. Or the rotting dirt outside our houses that isn't collected for 2 weeks because of yet another protest but our rates have been increased. I almost feel obliged to apologise for my "false representation". A real little gem, our province & country. You have set me straight, today I might even go to my municipality & personally thank them for the 3year frustration in processing my business licence - if they haven't decided to randomly close early again🙌

You mentioned the looting, If you didn't know, South Africa has hundreds of cities ,towns and rural communities, of which looting mainly took place in 3 CITIES in South Africa Jhb, Pmb and DBN, 99% of SA citizens did not even participate in the looting of Which some innocent citizens lost their lives due to racial profiling in the hands of the people claiming to be "protecting their community" and assuming they were looters, and looting only happened in A FEW PARTS of those cities, 90% of JHB was not even affected in the looting, Joburg is the biggest metropolitan area with so many malls and shops, Most residents have not even been inconvenienced one bit, so that's exaggeration coming from you.
Like i said idk where you live, but where I live garbage is collected every single week and the streets are clean and roads are in good condition, everything regularly maintained, so yes your generalization about SA is a false representation.
In many parts of SA public service delivery, safety and security, policing, law and order, water supply etc. is actually very excellent, in other parts especially very populated it can be the opposite, but doesn't mean its generally bad everywhere in SA. Personally I think the current government is not doing enough to improve the current conditions in SA, but they honestly really did improve things other parts.
You talk about Rusks. I can't understand why i can't find rusks in the UK, they are delicious and amazing for a quick brekkie. I also miss vetkoek, koeksustets, and the lovely variety of breads. The bakeries are huge and have so much to explore, its hard to make up my mind about which one i want. I love the shoppjng malls and the lovely friendly staff. My favourite dish at the restaurants was the Seafood platter with a fresh variety of different fish. The cooks are amazing. I also loved sitting outside after work listening to the frogs and other sounds. There is something very special in the country, and of course having a braai with friends on the weekends. My wish is that SA will change for the better for everyone. A safe, happy place where all people can support and live together in harmony. Thank you so much. 🐝

As a Motswana who has lived in England for 4years I feel your pain.
Sorry but having been born and raised in SA for the first 30 years of my life, then spent the subsequent 4 decades in the UK, interspersed with many visits back to the old country, I'm totally certain that I made the right choice. It's just the pleasure of not having to "watch my back" in the UK and not needing to lock doors at night, although I still do out of habit. Yes food tastes so much better in SA, but personal safety and security tops everything for me. I knew the son of the Greek family who started Steers, when we did military service together. No doubt you know that Nandos is South African as well. However there's a lot more to choosing where to build a life for your family than food, wine and clothing shops. By the way, Woolworths is owned by Marks & Spencer UK and aims at a similarly prosperous segment of society.
